Down the mountain from Flagstaff, 45 minutes through Oak Creek Canyon and Slide Rock State Park, sits the famous little tourist town of
Sedona, Arizona. It's a cute, walkable place surrounded by an amphitheater of iconic red rocksthe vast sandstone monoliths so often seen in photos. This is a popular pilgrimage for New Age types and people seeking spiritual enlightenment, because of the theory that it's the site of powerful and transformative energy vortices. It's also an art mecca with visual inspiration in every direction, and many galleries to showcase local artists. Nature lovers visit for the hiking (more than 300 trails around the Sedona area), mountain biking, jeep tours, horseback riding, and golf. There are great spas, toothe most famous is Enchantment. On the drive down from Sedona through the Sonoran Desert, you'll pass through the Verde Valley, a small but scrappy wine region that's about to be made famous by a documentary about rock-star-turned-local-vintner Maynard James Keenan of Tool.
