Though it originally was the “A” of the Netherlands Antilles “ABC Islands,” Aruba gained independence in the 1980s. Dutch influences still remain, but this densely populated and highly touristy Eastern Caribbean island operates under its own steam. A popular cruise ship port of call, Aruba attracts land-based tourism for its scuba diving, gorgeous beaches, casinos, and huge, family-friendly self-contained hotels. Tons of well-known hotel brands, from the Marriott to the Hyatt to the Westin, have a presence on the islandand most of them have a casino on property or adjacent.
