The bustling Mexico vacation resort city of Puerto Vallarta is so famous today that nobody really thinks about how it first got noticed. But like many placesand many big-name starsHollywood played a factor in its rise to the big leagues. It caught attention in the early 1960s as the setting for the classic Burton/Taylor film Night of the Iguana and when that golden couple eventually bought a house there, its reputation was set. In the 1970s, prime property around scenic Banderas Bay was given over to the development of many major luxury resorts, while the oceanfront boardwalk El Malecon became one of the tourist hotspots of the Western Hemisphere. Golf courses, galleries, nightclubs, and shopping centers followed. Today, families, honeymooners, student groups, and conventioneers come here for pleasure and maybe a bit of business. Just across the state border, Nuevo Vallarta is swiftly growing to accommodate the never-ending demand for sun and fun.
