Scene for who

This Xinjiang travel guide is for foreign tourists who want the big landscapes—snowy Tianshan passes, blue lakes, desert highways, Pamir peaks, and the famous Duku Highway—but are unsure about safety, hotel booking, entry rules, and border-area permits.

This scene is especially relevant for:

  • Western deep-travel visitors planning their first Xinjiang trip
  • Photographers and road-trip travelers attracted by dramatic scenery
  • Foreign tourists worried about passport checks, hotel acceptance, or restricted areas
  • Travelers comparing northern Xinjiang, southern Xinjiang, Kashgar, Tashkurgan, and the Duku Highway

The main decision is not whether Xinjiang is worth visiting. It is how to choose a route that is beautiful, realistic, legally manageable, and easy to book.

Duku Highway Landscape

Duku Highway Landscape

Is Xinjiang safe and practical for foreign tourists in 2026?

Yes, Xinjiang is practical for foreign tourists in 2026, but it is better planned as an “adventure destination with paperwork” than as a casual city break. The region is vast, security checks are common, and some border or high-mountain areas require more preparation.

For most foreign tourists, the practical travel experience looks like this:

Travel factor

What foreign tourists should expect

Safety

Major tourist cities and popular scenic routes are generally practical for visitors

Checks

Passport checks may happen at hotels, transport hubs, scenic areas, or road checkpoints

Planning style

Advance hotel and route planning is strongly recommended

Best travel mode

Private driver, organized route, or carefully planned self-guided itinerary

Main challenge

Not personal safety, but administrative friction and route restrictions

A first-time foreign visitor should build the trip around established travel hubs:

  • Urumqi: best arrival hub and starting point
  • Turpan: good for desert scenery, history, and easier short trips
  • Yining / Nalati: useful for grasslands and northern Xinjiang scenery
  • Kuqa: a strong stop between the Duku Highway and southern Xinjiang
  • Kashgar: one of the best bases for Silk Road culture and Pamir-side trips

Best for:

  • Slow travelers
  • Photographers
  • Road-trip fans
  • Culture-focused visitors
  • Travelers comfortable with passport checks and fixed hotel bookings

Not ideal for:

  • Fully spontaneous backpacking
  • Last-minute rural guesthouse hopping
  • Travelers who dislike checkpoints
  • Visitors expecting unrestricted access to every border landscape

The safest planning rule is simple: keep your passport accessible, book known hotels, avoid unclear border routes without guidance, and leave buffer time for checks or weather changes.

What are the 2026 entry requirements for foreigners visiting Xinjiang?

The core requirement is straightforward: foreign tourists need a valid passport and either a valid Chinese visa or eligibility for China’s visa-free entry or visa-free transit policy. Xinjiang does not have a separate general tourist visa, so your China entry status comes first.

Before planning Xinjiang, check these items in order:

Requirement

What to check before departure

Passport

Validity, blank pages, and matching personal details

China entry status

Tourist visa, visa-free eligibility, or transit eligibility

Arrival route

Whether your flight or train route matches your entry status

Arrival card

Whether online or paper submission is needed

Hotel booking

Whether the hotel can process passport check-in

Restricted areas

Whether your route enters border-management zones

For 2026, many ordinary passport holders may be able to enter China visa-free for short tourism stays if their nationality is covered by China’s visa-exemption arrangements. However, rules vary by nationality, passport type, stay length, and travel purpose, so foreign tourists should confirm eligibility before booking a long Xinjiang route.

Visa-free transit is more restrictive than normal tourism entry. Do not assume you can fly into Urumqi and travel freely under transit rules. A qualifying transit itinerary usually needs:

  • A confirmed onward ticket
  • A third-country or region route
  • Entry through an eligible port
  • Travel within the permitted transit area
  • Compliance with the allowed stay period

For most leisure travelers planning Kashgar, Duku Highway, Nalati, Sayram Lake, or Tashkurgan, a normal tourist visa or clear visa-free tourism eligibility is usually easier than trying to force the trip into a transit framework.

This well-established five-star hotel in the city center exceeded my expectations in terms of value for money! The location is absolutely fantastic, right across from the city's iconic Red Mountain Tower, which is beautifully illuminated by the环城高速路 (Ring Expressway). It's also not far from the International Grand Bazaar and the famous Hotan Second Street Night Market, about three bus stops away, making it incredibly convenient for getting around and shopping. The location truly can't be beat. The hotel itself has a grand and elegant atmosphere, with a lobby that showcases rich Western Regions culture and a mural corridor filled with cultural exhibits. Manager Watt had our room and key cards ready for us in advance, which was a very thoughtful and attentive service. The room was clean and tidy, offering a great view of the city at night, and was fully equipped with all amenities. The best part is the hotel's own dedicated parking lot, making parking incredibly convenient with plenty of spaces and hassle-free entry and exit. Overall, the quality is top-notch – clean, tidy, quiet, and comfortable, all at a great price.

The location is perfect, transportation is convenient, and the room offers a view of the sunset. I prefer this old hotel with traditional decor. I hate the smart toilets these days; they look smart, but they're only half-baked. The lid covers your back before you even lift it, and you flush when you sit down. So I prefer this traditional toilet. The hotel upgraded it and provided a fruit plate and yogurt. There's also a breakfast shop at the back entrance, which the security guard directed us to. Hahaha.

The Hilton Urumqi boasts an excellent location with convenient access. The rooms are clean, tidy, and well-equipped, and the heated pool made for a comfortable and pleasant stay. I highly recommend the Chinese restaurant on the third floor; the dishes are exquisite and the flavors are outstanding, made with fresh ingredients for an authentic taste. The service is attentive and welcoming, making it a perfect choice for both business dinners and leisure travelers.

This stay far exceeded our expectations, and I have to give a huge shout-out to Martin at the front desk! We originally only booked one night. When checking in, Martin proactively added my wife's WeChat. Not only did he efficiently complete the check-in process, but he also thoughtfully shared incredibly practical local restaurant recommendations and travel tips. The places he suggested were fantastic in terms of taste and experience, which made us spontaneously decide to extend our stay for two more nights! Throughout our stay, Martin maintained a professional yet enthusiastic service attitude. Every time we had an issue, he responded promptly, and his thoughtful attention to detail made us feel incredibly valued. This trip's experience was elevated to the fullest thanks to Martin's service. We will definitely prioritize staying here next time we visit Urumqi and will also recommend this hotel to our friends!

I went to travel in southern Xinjiang and checked into this hotel when I arrived in Urumqi. Since I felt good, I stayed in this hotel again when I returned to Urumqi from southern Xinjiang. The hotel is in a good location, with convenient dining and shopping around. It is very close to the subway station. It costs 4 yuan to take 7 subway stops to the airport, which is very convenient. The hotel has free parking, which is convenient for self-driving. The hotel management is relatively standardized, the front desk staff has a good attitude, the room area is relatively large, and the hygiene is also good. Except that the shower door and the toilet door affect each other, everything else is fine. The hotel's breakfast is great, with a wide variety and good quality. There are fresh fruits and freshly ground coffee. The restaurant environment is clean and hygienic. The restaurant staff also pays attention to hygiene and has a good service attitude. I will definitely stay at Ruihao International Hotel when I come to Urumqi again.

The hotel I stayed in this time has certain deficiencies in terms of room facilities. It seems a bit old and lacks some popular smart devices nowadays. However, the hotel also has its outstanding advantages. The service attitude of the front desk staff is very enthusiastic. Their warm service makes people feel the warmth and care during the stay. In addition, the hotel is extremely convenient in location, and there are many food shops around. This is undoubtedly a great advantage for those who like to taste various delicacies. You can easily find all kinds of delicious food when you go out and satisfy the enjoyment of the taste buds. Generally speaking, although the hotel has disadvantages such as old facilities, its warm service, convenient location and rich surrounding food also make it have certain attraction. Let's start with the positives. The lobby is truly grand, and the price was reasonable. They upgraded my room without any hassle, and they provided purified bottled water (Baisui Mountain brand) with unlimited refills. However, the downsides were so bad that I literally couldn't sleep. In early April in Urumqi, the rooms facing the sun were probably around 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit), but the air conditioning couldn't be turned on. Even with a fan provided, it was still unbearably hot, making it impossible to get any sleep.

He lost Xiao Cao's eyebrows and black eyebrows. The color of daylily is so red, and the red skirt is jealous of the pomegranate flowers.

Staying at Liangmujian Homestay in Nileke is like falling into the gentle embrace of Yili. Outside the window, green mountains surround clear waters, and the courtyard is filled with the fragrance of flowers wafting down the stone steps. Here, every breath is enveloped in the freshness of the grassland, and every moment spent here is an embrace with nature. Escape the hustle and bustle of the world and find tranquility at Liangmujian Homestay. During the day, watch cattle and sheep graze on the hillsides; at night, listen to the stream as you drift off to sleep. The poetry of Nileke is hidden in the daily life of this small courtyard. The wind of Nileke carries the scent of grass and trees, blowing into the courtyard of Liangmujian Homestay. Sitting on a wooden chair, basking in the sun, watching the clouds drift by, letting time flow slowly—this rustic comfort is a healing experience that cannot be found in the city. The homestay is located within the scenic area, very close to Bee Town. It has its own parking lot, making parking convenient. The rooms are spacious and fully equipped. The owner is warm and attentive, always ready to help. The breakfast is plentiful, the meat buns are delicious, and the homestay is pet-friendly. I would definitely choose this place again next time.

The courtyard is very beautiful and the room is clean. There is a road under construction in front of the B&B recently. Call ahead to get the location and tell us how to get there. It's not far to Liuxing Street by taxi, just over ten minutes. I was tired from driving, but I stayed there for two days and it was very comfortable. The breakfast pancakes are delicious, Kakaxuan~

Super praise! recommend! The boss and the proprietress are very enthusiastic, because it is the off-season and arranged a room upgrade. I will stay here next time if I come to Yili again! Location: Just next to the bee town, very close to the dog bear ditch/Blongou, Blongou is beautiful! There are also a lot of food on the main road, and parking in the yard is very convenient. Room: The whole is very clean, there are some, the bathroom is separated from wet and dry, the air conditioning is also very powerful, the curtains are automatic, and the facilities are very new. Environment: The courtyard is beautiful and there is a swing; there is a public terrace at the back where you can sit and face the grassland, snow-capped mountains, streams, and cattle passing by. The terrace also has shade, very intimate, no need to worry about being exposed to the sun during the day! Breakfast: relatively simple but delicious, we got up late and there were not many dishes. The boss also bought local wild vegetable dumplings for extra meals. The eggs were also local eggs. When we checked out, we were fed cantaloupe and honey sugar. It was super delicious! (Especially compared to another homestay in Xinyuan before, there is nothing to make up for during breakfast time, it is a world of difference) The boss took the initiative to help see the backcar. First, he helped us plug in the electric card and burned hot water. He gave the coat hanger to dry clothes in the courtyard. When I checked out, the proprietress also sent it to the door. It was really the best homestay on this trip!

Self-driving to Xinjiang, coming here is like a paradise, sleeping at night is super quiet, the fatigue of the journey is swept away! The melons and fruits and vegetables in the yard are picked and eaten casually. The proprietress is super enthusiastic. When we leave, we let us pick watermelons and eat on the road. If it weren't for the later itinerary, I would really live here for a while! The proprietress also said that fruit freedom will be achieved after 3.5! Looking forward to staying in Xinjiang again in the future!

Why not take a look at this one and save you money! . Why choose here? Because it is located in the back mountain of Kalajun, 8 kilometers away from the self-driving entrance, it can be said to be the closest hotel to the scenic area. Moreover, the environment is very good, the scenery is nice, the newly opened facilities are better, and more importantly, the price is right. A two-bedroom, one-living-room detached private villa costs only 1,500 yuan. You should know that a large bed room in Yunchi Valley Huajianying costs more than 3,000 yuan during the same period. Sorry, I don't want to pay this tax. There is basically no difference between the two landscapes, they are almost next to each other. . There are large tracts of gentle grassland here, with gently undulating hills and valleys that look like waves. The environment is really good, away from the hustle and bustle and quiet enough. You can drive the car directly to the door of the villa, which is very convenient. . The restaurant offers a variety of stir-fried dishes at reasonable prices, but the biggest problem is the breakfast, which is short in duration (8:30-10 am) and consists of almost only steamed buns and pickles. Of course, this is a common problem of independent hotels/B&Bs in Xinjiang. Breakfast is generally very poor, and it is better to buy something outside for 10 yuan. . This hotel has two room types. The one I booked is a deluxe private bath family room, and the other is a private bath suite. Both have two bedrooms. The main difference is that the family room has 10 square meters more area and is a combination of 1.8+1.3 beds, while the ordinary suite has a 1.8 large bed, which means that 6 people can stay in the family room without being crowded. . Each villa has its own door and yard. The yard is quite large and well-landscaped, with lush flowers and plants. There is a swing on one side and outdoor tables and chairs and a large private hot spring bathing pool on the other side, with parasols to protect privacy. . The water in the hot spring pool drains very quickly. It is really rare to have such a large amount of hot water in a place like this. You should know that most hotels and homestays in Xinjiang still use water heaters, and people have to come one by one to take a bath. It is indeed a luxury to just take a hot spring bath. . The first thing you see when you enter the door is the living room, with bedrooms on both sides. The living room has a large TV, a sofa and coffee table combination, a side cabinet and a full-length mirror. The decoration is very new and modern, and it is spacious and bright with no peculiar smell. There is also a set of Chinese tea set on the coffee table, and the tea bags are quite good. . The bedrooms on both sides are furnished identically, both have separate bathrooms and bathrobes, and are overall very clean and tidy. . There is no air conditioning in the room, but fortunately it was not very hot when the OP went there. There is an electric heater on the bedside table, which is quite necessary. After all, the altitude here is high and the temperature at night is close to 0 degrees. Although it is small in size, the heating effect is really good. . The bathroom is a bit cramped, with a single basin, dry and wet separation, a smart toilet, and good amenities. It's just that the shower system is not very easy to use. Many new hotels this year use this type of shower system. The water divider is not good, and it is difficult to adjust the hot and cold water to a comfortable level, either too cold or too hot. . But overall, I'm quite satisfied with this hotel. If four people stay here, the average cost per person is only 350. I checked and the price hasn't increased much, it's around 1,800.

Location: Right by the Nalati River Valley Grassland, very close to Panlong Valley Trail. Our room even had grassland views from the window. Facilities: The executive room's hardware was quite new. The room was super spacious, and the bathroom had a three-fixture separation, plus a bathtub. The only downside was that the window in our room couldn't open as the handle was stuck. Hygiene: The hygiene was pretty good. The linens and tissues were all high quality, and the bathtub even came with a tub liner. Service: The front desk greeter had an excellent service attitude. As soon as our car stopped, he approached us to ask if we were checking in and helped us with our luggage to the room. We had also contacted the hotel in advance requesting two connecting rooms, and they arranged it for us. However, on the first day, we saw other guests receiving welcome gifts, and I wondered if we didn't get one because we booked using a Ctrip room voucher. When checking out, the front desk lady didn't even ask.

The hotel felt like a resort with a shuttle service to transport guests around. The on-site restaurants were all excellent, and the breakfast selection was quite diverse – I particularly enjoyed dipping the baursak in jam. The staff were incredibly warm and friendly, making for a great experience. My room was a bit further in and seemed like it hadn't been cleaned in a while, so the cleanliness was just okay. The sofa and fabric had a somewhat stale smell. The most frustrating part of my stay was the loud thumping noise, possibly from the roof or nearby, that would occur whenever the wind blew, which prevented me from getting a good night's sleep. I eventually called in the early hours, and the staff quickly resolved the issue, allowing me to finally get some rest.

I have been away from the cliff pasture for three days, and I will still miss the time I was held steady by nature. The room type I chose is Qiya, the name is very good, when reading, you can open a small wooden window by the bed and feel the guidance brought by reading. Of course, you can also look at the opposite side of the balcony in the morning, with the shape, health fist as a pen, and nature for an energy exchange. The view of the white boudoir is also superb, shooting the movement track of the morning fog climbing the hillside, capturing the life of cattle, sheep and horses, and even a touch of warmth left for us in the sunset. I am still very grateful to the little housekeeper (of course not forced), the room management and room service are well organized, there is still work at 12 o'clock in the evening, there is a response, I really appreciate BoBo for different guests but use his own high level to help us arrange the itinerary, contact the chartered car, Coordinate all kinds of sudden problems. If you have a walking experience, or are interested in the white, you can also take a fun light hike. Fixed lines, but have unexpected surprises. Sleepy and cute coffee lamb, cute and pure calf, and the joy of climbing. Finally, the mattress is really comfortable, and it is repeatedly jumped in the early health and bed every day. The cliff is not dangerous, the cliff is not alone, and the people who see it are the happiest.

The B&B is conveniently located right next to National Highway 218, but the ordinary exterior wouldn't give you the impression of the stunning interior. Across from the Nalati Scenic Area, there's a large parking lot right outside, and there's a restaurant and supermarket nearby. The house was beautifully designed and very clean overall. However, some details were not satisfactory. A guesthouse, in my understanding, should offer home-like service, but the laundry room was only open from 10 AM to 10 PM – how were we, as tourists, supposed to use it? Breakfast was included; we chose a double room (2 adults and 2 children), but only breakfast was provided for the two adults, leaving the children to eat separately – this was inconsiderate. However, it was shared with a small restaurant outside the hotel, shared by several other guesthouses nearby. We ate on the street, and the tableware wasn't very hygienic; we watched as they washed and dried the dishes with a rag. At night, after midnight, the water pump was turned off, leaving no cold water. I don't know if this was a special occasion or if it's the norm. There was no drying room, and it was shared with the common areas, which looked really ugly. A glamorous exterior, a barren interior – that's my honest impression. Dissatisfied.

Can foreign tourists book hotels in Xinjiang, and what should they check before paying?

Yes, foreign tourists can book hotels in Xinjiang, but they should verify passport check-in before paying, especially outside major cities. Larger hotels in popular tourist hubs are usually easier for foreign guests, while small guesthouses or remote properties may be less familiar with foreign passport registration.

The safest booking approach is to prioritize hotels in established destinations:

Destination

Hotel booking difficulty for foreigners

Practical advice

Urumqi

Low

Best arrival city and easiest for international travelers

Kashgar

Low to medium

Choose hotels with recent foreign guest reviews

Turpan

Low to medium

Good for short stays and classic sightseeing

Yining / Nalati

Medium

Confirm passport check-in before payment

Kuqa

Medium

Useful for Duku Highway and southern Xinjiang routes

Remote border counties

Higher

Ask about permits and passport registration in advance

Before paying for a hotel, check for:

  • Clear acceptance of passport check-in
  • Recent reviews from international travelers
  • A location that matches your route
  • No vague “local ID only” wording
  • Easy access to transport or scenic areas
  • Flexible cancellation if your route depends on weather or permits

Trip.com listings are useful for comparing hotel location, room availability, and recent guest feedback before locking in a long Xinjiang route. For foreign tourists, recent reviews often matter more than star rating because they show whether passport check-in worked smoothly in practice.

At check-in, use your original passport, not a photo. Hotels in China must register foreign travelers’ accommodation information, and travelers staying outside hotels may need to complete accommodation registration through the relevant local process.

For Xinjiang, hotel planning is not just about comfort. It also affects how smoothly your route works. A well-chosen hotel can reduce check-in stress, make early departures easier, and help avoid awkward situations in smaller towns.

Do foreigners need a permit for Xinjiang, Kashgar, Tashkurgan, or border areas?

For the main Xinjiang tourist circuit, foreign tourists usually do not need a separate Xinjiang-wide permit. A valid China entry status and passport are normally enough for major cities and mainstream scenic destinations.

Usually straightforward for foreign tourists:

  • Urumqi
  • Turpan
  • Kashgar city
  • Sayram Lake
  • Nalati
  • Yining
  • Kuqa
  • Standard city-to-city routes

The permit issue becomes more important when a route approaches border-management or restricted areas. In Xinjiang, this most often affects trips toward:

Area or route

Permit concern

Planning advice

Tashkurgan

Often linked with border-area checks

Confirm before booking transport

Pamir Plateau

May involve local permit requirements

Use a route operator or local guidance

Karakul Lake routes

Often connected with Pamir itineraries

Check current access rules

Karakoram Highway sections

Border proximity may create restrictions

Avoid last-minute planning

Remote border counties

Rules may vary by area

Confirm with local authorities or licensed operators

The cleanest rule is:

  • If your route stays in major cities and mainstream scenic areas, plan normally.
  • If your route touches Tashkurgan, frontier passes, border counties, or Pamir-side routes, ask about permits before booking transport.
  • If a driver, hotel, or tour provider gives unclear answers, do not treat that as confirmation.

Foreign tourists should also avoid assuming that a permit system designed for domestic travelers automatically applies in the same way to foreign visitors. Some border-area procedures may require in-person handling, local approval, or support from authorized providers.

For a first Xinjiang trip, a permit-light itinerary is often smarter. You can still see excellent landscapes without building the whole route around uncertain access.

When is the Duku Highway open, and which route is best for a first Xinjiang trip?

For 2026, plan the Duku Highway as a summer-only route. It is commonly affected by snow, ice, road-safety work, falling rocks, and high-mountain weather, so the actual opening date should always be checked close to departure.

The Duku Highway is not just a scenic road. It is a high-altitude mountain route with major seasonal limits.

Duku Highway planning point

What foreign tourists should know

Best season

Usually summer to early autumn, depending on official opening

Main risk

Snow, ice, rockfall, road closures, and weather changes

Best itinerary length

Easier with 10 days or more in Xinjiang

Best route role

Connects northern grasslands with Kuqa and southern Xinjiang

Not recommended for

Very short trips or travelers with no buffer days

For a first foreign-tourist Xinjiang route, choose one of two practical plans:

Route

Best for

When to choose it

Plan A: Urumqi → Sayram Lake → Yining / Nalati → Duku Highway → Kuqa → Kashgar

Classic north-to-south scenery

Choose this if Duku is officially open and you want lakes, grasslands, mountains, canyons, desert, and Kashgar in one route

Plan B: Urumqi → Turpan → Kuqa → Kashgar → Tashkurgan / Pamir

More predictable southern Xinjiang planning

Choose this if Duku is closed, you travel before summer, or you prefer culture, desert scenery, and Pamir landscapes

Plan A is the more dramatic road-trip route. It gives you the classic Xinjiang contrast:

  • Alpine lakes
  • Grasslands
  • Snow-capped mountain passes
  • Winding roads
  • Canyons
  • Desert edges
  • Kashgar’s old Silk Road atmosphere

Plan B is more stable if weather is uncertain. It also works better for travelers who care more about history, desert landscapes, Kashgar, and the Pamir Plateau than about completing the Duku Highway.

Do not force Duku into a short itinerary. If you have under a week, choose either northern Xinjiang scenery or southern Xinjiang culture. If you have 10 days or more, Duku becomes much easier to place naturally between Nalati and Kuqa.

Take your child to a nature camp to do leaf rubbing. The teacher will teach you how to choose leaves and tap out the texture, patiently accompanying you throughout the process. Even if the child taps randomly, the teacher won't rush them. The finished rubbings can be made into bookmarks or canvas bags, which can be taken home directly. The child squats in the grass picking leaves, not getting bored for half an hour, and also learns about many new kinds of leaves. Playing all day can also teach you something, which is much more interesting than staying at home watching cartoons.

Dukugonglu is a beautiful 561km road that crosses the Tian Shan Mountains in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China. It is famous for its rugged mountain roads and beautiful natural scenery, and you can visit various cultural and historical sites. It is only open from June to October, so it is recommended to check the opening before traveling. Dukugonglu runs from Dushanzi in the north to Kuqa in the south, and offers a variety of landscapes. You can enjoy various natural landscapes such as glaciers, canyons, grasslands, and deserts, and you can also visit historical sites along the traces of the ancient Silk Road. Dukugonglu has many rugged mountain roads, so you must pay attention to safety. You must thoroughly inspect your vehicle and pay attention while driving. In addition, it is recommended to get enough rest and check your health to prevent altitude sickness.
