Chapel Bridge: Symbol of Lucerne

Lucerne's most famous Chapel Bridge, the symbol of Lucerne, was built in 1333 and is the oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe. The bridge's canopies are painted with 120 religious and historical oil paintings. You can also see paintings depicting the scene of the Black Death outbreak during that time. The bridge is an all-wood structure with a covered top. The exterior and the bridge ends are adorned with flowers, like a rainbow on the clear lake. In the middle of the bridge is an octagonal water tower with a red roof and white walls, like a classic picture on a postcard.

Lion Monument: Most Touching Sculpture in The World

The Lion Monument, also known as the dying lion statue, was designed by the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen to commemorate the 1100 Swiss mercenaries who fought in the battle defending Paris's Tuileries Palace in 1792. Among these 1100 soldiers, around 760 died and 350 survived. The lion, 10 meters long and 3 meters high, falls painfully on the ground. A broken spear is embedded on the shoulder, next to it is a shield with the Swiss national emblem, and there is a shield in his arms. The shield has a Sweet Iris carved on it, representing the French royal family. There is text below the statue describing this event. The famous American writer Mark Twain has traveled to countless places in his life, but only praised this monument sculpture. He called it: "The saddest and most moving piece of rock in the World."

Walk through The Old Town of Lucerne, Admire The Medieval Murals

The Old Town of Lucerne preserves many medieval buildings, as well as medieval murals that have a long history and charm. Each painting tells a moving story and it is worth spending some time to stop and appreciate them. Nowadays, most of the surviving and emotive murals in the Old Town have been passed down from the Middle Ages. The resilience to wind and sun is due to the famous techniques of the 13th century Italian painting technique - fresco, which allows the colors to "grow” on the wall, enduring for ages.

Play with White Swans along The Reuss River

The beautiful Reuss River is like a jade belt on the waist of Lucerne. In addition to the landmark Chapel Bridge and the Octagonal Water Tower on the river, the bevies of white swans are the most beautiful mobile attraction on the river. This is the best embodiment of people and nature living in harmony. Bevies of swans swim leisurely on the sparkling lake. When the tourists are near the river, they will approach in a friendly way, watching you with innocent eyes and eating the cake from your hand.

Visit A Lively Riverside Market

On Tuesdays and Saturdays, Lucerne has a lively vegetable, fruit, and flower market that stretches along the Reuss River along both sides of the Chapel Bridge. Various vegetables, strawberries, flowers, honey and canned food, eggs, cheese, bread, etc. are all sold under the arcade. The stall owners and the customers all seem to be so happy, everyone is filled with pride in their own goods or loot. The grandfather selling ham is handsome like a Hollywood movie star. The auntie selling cheese smiles with the scent of milk. The beautiful girl selling fruits and vegetables is as fresh as the strawberries in her stall.

The Schwanenplatz next to the lake is a prime location in Lucerne. It is a paradise for those who love Swiss watches and jewelry. Not only are there flagship stores of large Swiss watch and jewelry chains such as Bucherer, Gubelin, and Embassy, but also many Swiss watch brands.
