Fenghuang Ancient Town is situated in the southwest of Xiangxi, Hunan Province. Built during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, it lies nestled between mountains and rivers, with the Tuojiang River flowing through its heart. Red sandstone city walls line the riverbank, while Nanhua Mountain provides a picturesque backdrop to the Qing-era city towers. Below the north gate, a narrow wooden bridge supported by stone piers once served as the town’s main exit.
Inside the town, bluestone streets, riverside stilt houses, ancient architecture, and rich ethnic traditions create a distinctive Xiangxi charm. Highlights include the former residence of writer Shen Congwen, the Ancient City Museum, and Chongde Hall—all well worth a visit.

Zhushan Miao Village sits in the northwest corner of Fenghuang Ancient Town, western Hunan, surrounded by water on three sides and backed by steep mountains. Nestled within Kunlun Peak, the village boasts clear spring water, blooming mountain flowers, and the enchanting melodies of Miao folk songs. With over 800 years of history, it remains one of the best-preserved Miao cultural strongholds in the region and is recognized as a prominent "Banpo Tribe" in China.
Home to nearly 1,000 residents—mainly from the Wu, Long, and Ma families—the village maintains a pure Miao identity. Locals speak the Miao dialect and carry on traditions such as Miao medicine, martial arts, singing, dancing, and more. Traditional festivals like "April 8," "Dragon Boat Festival," and "Ghost Festival" reflect the community’s deep spiritual roots and vibrant culture.
