Sapporo’s Top Ten Restaurants

As the capital of Hokkaido Prefecture, Sapporo not only has beautiful natural scenery and historical arts and culture, it also has the most authentic Hokkaido cuisine. These ten restaurants are among Sapporo's most popular, they’re all delicious and they’re all places you should visit!

Kani Honke is an old-fashioned Hokkaido crab shop serving the three major Hokkaido crab banquet dishes. There are many locations of Kani Honke throughout Japan and the main location, in Sapporo, has been open since before World War II. This restaurant is built in the style of ancient Japan and boasts a unique flavor. It is very popular with foreign tourists. The store uses fresh Hokkaido crabs to create a variety of dishes such as delicious crab sashimi and other types of crab sushi that can't be copied by other shops. They have sweet and delicious grilled crab meat, light crab with tofu, crab meatballs, and crab hotpot. All of their dishes show off original exquisite crab flavor. A meal for two tends to cost between 5600 and 6300 yen.

The Sapporo Ramen Republic is a themed garden that brings eight of the most popular Hokkaido ramen shops together in one place so that you can taste all of Hokkaido’s different types of ramen. Restaurants include Shirakaba Sansou, Ajisai, Misono and Yoshiyama Shouten. No single shop is very big, but all of the shops have great big bowls of ramen with billowing clouds of steam and owners who care deeply about making the best possible noodle soup.

Snow Brand is a famous Japanese dairy brand founded in 1925. The Snow Brand Sapporo Flagship Shop near JR Sapporo Station is a dessert shop featuring ice cream made with Snow Brand milk. Not only is it delicious, it also has a wonderful mouth feel that makes it worth going for even in winter. Despite the length of time it has been open, the business is still prosperous and remains one of the most popular dessert spots in Sapporo. Naturally, the most popular item in the store is the Hokkaido special Ice Cream Royal, which is said to be the ice cream prepared for the Showa Emperor when he visited Hokkaido. They also have an incredible giant sundae called "I AM #1," which takes a whole 8-inch cake, and covers it with various flavors of ice cream and fruit. The sheer quantity of ice cream is practically unimaginable. If you want to finish it in one sitting, you’ll need to bring a friend or four. The first floor of the Snow Brand Parlor features native Hokkaido specialties such as Shiroi Koibito and chocolate, as well as various Snow Brand products such as cream and cheese. It’s a good place for buying gifts and souvenirs too.

Kushidori is a very popular Japanese izakaya chain featuring all kinds of skewers and beer. Most of the skewers are meat items such as beef tenderloin, grilled chicken wings, and roasted cartilage but there are also vegetarian dishes such as asparagus, ginkgo, and cheese mochi. Make sure to get a bottle of authentic Sapporo beer to accompany the meal as it is delicious and refreshing. The shop has excellent service which makes it popular with both tourists and local Japanese people. The skewers in the store are very good. Brushed with just a touch of salt or a thin coating of soy sauce, the original flavor of the items shines through. We recommend the grilled beef tongue, grilled chicken wings or chicken skewers. The cost per person is about 2000-3000 yen.

Picante is perhaps Sapporo’s most famous soup curry shop. Because Sapporo has absorbed a variety of curry cultures from places such as India and Southeast Asia, Sapporo-style curry has become a familiar and famous type of food in Hokkaido. When ordering, you can choose the type of soup, the main ingredients, and the accompanying ingredients according to your own preference. Finally, decide how spicy you want it to be. If it is extra spicy, it might cost a bit more. Every table has an individual service button with which to conveniently call the waiter. There is also a Chinese language menu which makes ordering easy peasy.

Aji No Tokedai is Sapporo City’s most famous chain of ramen stores. Primarily serving traditional Japanese cuisine and ramen noodles, this is the representative taste of Sapporo style ramen. It is also one of the most popular ramen noodle restaurants in Sapporo. The outside of the store is decorated with red fabric, the signs are all very eye-catching, and the traditional Japanese-style architectural style gives people a very comfortable feeling. The service here is also very good, and per capita consumption is about 1000 yen.

Ganso Ramen Yokocho is a short street with nearly 20 famous Sapporo Ramen shops serving Hokkaido’s four famous types of ramen noodles. The different kinds of ramen are associated with various activities and special seasons, so whatever time you come, you will have a slightly different experience. Some shops are even open so late that it's early again. Many foreign tourists make a special trip here just to have authentic Sapporo Ramen. In addition to traditional flavors such as miso, soy sauce, and salt, the ramen noodles are also accompanied by items such as crab, scallops, corn, and butter. Some of the types of delicious noodles here are only available in Sapporo. The per capita consumption here is about 1,000 yen.

Genghis Khan barbecue is a type of traditional Sapporo rotisserie specializing in roast lamb. The lamb used here is only about one year old. The meat is fresh and tender, and frozen meat is never used. Only fresh lamb is used, which is why the shop is so famous for it's food. This location is very small and can probably only seat a dozen people at a time. Since it is so popular, it is necessary to queue for seats. Also, because the store is so small and the meat is cooked on a rotisserie, everything smells of cooking meat and smoke. The per capita consumption here is generally between 2000 and 3000 yen.

Kani Shogun is a famous crab restaurant that uses very fresh ingredients. Each crab has a slightly sweet taste to it. There are both à la carte dishes and fixed banquet menus available. The variety of dishes includes unshelled crabs, crab and tofu, crab flavor sticks, crab sashimi, grilled crab, and crab and squid. Whatever kind of crab you can imagine there being in Japanese cuisine, this shop has it, and you must taste it all to appreciate how delicious it is. A crabmeat hotpot is 6300 yen and the banquet course is 6800 yen.

Wagyu Beef Ishizaki is a top ranked Japanese beef restaurant located in Sapporo. It serves various beef cuts such as tongue, tenderloin, steak, loin and ribs. The beef which the restaurant serves is halfway between fatty and lean. Cooked for just the right amount of time (not too long, not too short), the taste as the meat enters your mouth is exquisite. The special sauce which the store provides as an accompaniment is also very flavorful. Due to the small number of Wagyu Beef restaurants in Sapporo, this restaurant has an excellent atmosphere. If you want to be guaranteed a seat when you arrive, it is recommended to book in advance.
