The United States is now the global epicenter for the COIVD-19 pandemic. New York City is particularly impacted with more than a quarter of the country’s confirmed cases. Governors in over than 30 states have issued so-called shelter-in-place orders. Large swaths of the US economy have ground to a halt as non-essential businesses are shuttered and cultural institutions like theaters, museums, and art galleries have closed to prevent people gathering in large numbers. Leading scientists are now estimating the pandemic could kill between 100,000 and 240,000 people in the United States. This shocking assessment means travel and tourism in the United States is nearly impossible for the next 3 to 6 months. Those with plans to travel to the United States should reconsider and those already there need to follow the advice of local health officials and the World Health Organization.
