Author Talk - The River - Chris Hammer (BL) | Burnside Library
Jul 10, 2025 (UTC+09:30)
Burnside
Before Chris Hammer was the bestselling author of crime novels (such as Scrublands) he was an investigative journalist. This work led him to write a prize-winning non-fiction book about the Murray Darling Basin and the people living alongside it, The River. Join author Chris Hammer and Dr Philip Roetman, environmental sustainability champion, winner of Unsung Hero of Science Communication at the South Australian Science Excellence Awards and City of Burnside's own Environmental Sustainability Manager, as they discuss the updated edition being published of The River and the state of the Murray Darling Basin today. Chris will also discuss his career up until now, including his TV series on Stan, and how this non-fiction work greatly influenced his fiction. Australia's major river system is collapsing. Parts of it are dying; parts of it are already dead. Australia's most significant river no longer reaches the sea. I look out into the dim autumn light and wonder once again how it has come to this His travels during the crippling millennium drought take us through riverland communities, sharing the laughter, sadness and reflections of the people he meets along the way. The River looks past the daily news reports and their sterile statistics to reveal the true impact of our rivers' decline on the people who live along their shores, and on the country as a whole. It's a tale that leaves the reader with nostalgia for an Australia that may be fading away forever. First published in 2010, The River continues… Copies of The River will be available for purchase courtesy of Harry Hartog Burnside. Tea & Coffee provided. Bookings essential. Shari Dunn Book Launch QUALIFIED | Powell's City of Books
Feb 25, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Burnside
A groundbreaking work challenging the false narrative that diversity equals a lack of qualifications by uncovering the impact of competency checking, a practice that unjustly scrutinizes Black people and other people of color, forcing them to repeatedly prove their worth, intelligence, and even their right to be in the workplace.
The advancement of Black and other people of color in the workplace is under attack as there is a turn away from the promise of the racial reconciliation of 2020. This period saw Black talent rise in the workplace from DEI managers to CEOs to junior-level hires. Yet, the post-2020 workplace is seeing an alarming retreat from creating workplaces and leadership that reflect the nation's diversity.
That retreat is characterized by underemployment, cracked glass cliffs, toxic work environments, and claims of empty pipelines. More concerning, Black professionals and other people of color often face greater scrutiny than their peers regarding job applications, work experience, and qualifications to even be considered for employment or advancement. And that scrutiny has a name: Competency Checking. Shari Dunn was born and raised in a working-class, blue-collar, African American neighborhood in one of the most segregated cities in the nation, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Growing up, she witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of racial discrimination on housing, health care, and employment for Black people. As part of the second wave of students bused to suburban schools, Shari understood that others had fought and died for her right to access education and opportunity. Shari is a polymath: an award-winning journalist, attorney, CEO, educator, and more. She holds a BA in philosophy from Marquette University and a JD from Northwestern Pritzker School of Law. Residing in Portland, Oregon, Shari brings her diverse expertise to her work, making significant contributions across multiple fields.
