For nearly 15 years I have been experimenting, both within my academic work and outside of it, with different ways of working - including collage and zine making and fiction and memoir writing. Although, my fiction and memoir work began as part of the griefwork I undertook following the death of my husband, John (1948-2010) and my mum, Dorothy (1931-2012) and were at first separate from my academic work, these writings are now additionally also often embedded in my scholarly pieces. NICK BATTLE: LIVE @ THE FISH FACTORY ARTSPACE | The Fish Factory Art Space
Jan 29, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Penryn
Nick BattleThe Fish Factory, Commercial Road, Penryn: Come and here Nick sing and tell stories, he has plenty to tell.....
The evening will feature songs from his solo repertoire, including his most recent album, “Audience Of One”, alongside stories of a life spent working the mechanics of the music industry, often being present at the start of the careers of artists who have become household names.
Nick Battle
Nick Battle has enjoyed a long and varied career in the music industry. He was in 70's prog rock band After The Fire, playing bass and violin on their debut album, ‘Signs Of Change’. He worked with Godley & Creme when they produced Writz and at IRS records in the 80's as an A&R man (his first top 10 hit was the novelty record by Karel Fialka ‘Hey Matthew’). He also nearly got fired for doing a radio edit on R.E.M.’s single, ‘It’s The End Of The World As We Know It’.
Nick ran his own independent record promotion business from 1988-1993 with clients including George Benson, Sir Cliff Richard, Ronnie Wood, Take That, Clannad, & Paul Hardcastle among many others. In 1993 he helped start the music publisher Windswept Pacific Music Ltd and introduced Simon Fuller (his former client) and The Spice Girls to the company. At the height of the company's success they enjoyed 44 top 40 hits in one year with a team of just two creative staff.
He has had his songs recorded by the actress Jane Horrocks, Michael Ball, Sir Cliff Richard opera singer Jonathan Veira, Karel Fialka, and Engelbert Humperdinck, and written with, amongst others, Chaz Jankel, Natasha Bedingfield, Tony Swain, Gary Barlow, Eliot Kennedy &David Grant.
Between 1993-2003 his first wife fought a ten year battle with cancer and this led to him founding the Gravel Road Trust a registered charity for carers, and patients dealing with long term illness and also the bereaved which he ran for 15 years.
In the noughties, Hodder & Stoughton published Nick's books, 'The Billy Fidget Letters' and 'Billy Fidgets Family Fortunes', about a foul-mouthed, feckless forty-year-old and some others he prefers to forget about.
He has managed the record producer Kipper (Sting, Brand New Day/Sacred Love etc), was a pundit talking to Jeremy Vine, he also managed Elizabeth McGovern’s band, Sadie & The Hotheads. For three and a half years had his own radio show, ‘Men At Work’ on Premier Radio where he interviewed among many stellar guests, Lulu, Martine McCutcheon, Lord Hastings, Elizabeth McGovern, Simon Reeve, Colin Blunstone, politicians, TV presenters, musicians, even some braver members of the clergy.
His songs have been featured in ‘Firefly Lane’ (Netflix), ‘Pretty Little Liars’ (Apple), and ‘East New York’ (CBS)
At present he runs a small music publishing company, (which among mainly Nick’s songs) also looks after the copyright, 'Let's Get Ready To Rumble' by Ant & Dec.
He is happiest when he’s working with truly creative people and if he could he would spend EVERY DAY writing and recording songs. His musical heroes are Hall & Oates, Paul Simon, Jimmy Webb, Kris Kristofferson, Ralph McTell, Johnny Cash, Carole King, James Taylor and Paul McCartney.
Nick lives in Cornwall, has three children, a Boxer dog and a miniature Schnauzer. He lives to create, communicate and on a good day be compassionate. He was also a funeral celebrant, taking close to 700 funerals between 2015-2023; he is currently writing a new book about his life and work in Cornwall, tentatively titled, ‘The Crem de la Crem’.
Since 2016 he has made four albums, ‘Big Heart’, ‘Love Is A Long Road, ’The Finish Line’ and the latest (and he believes his best!), ‘Audience Of One', is now available from all good digital sources, including his Bandcamp site.
He has performed, published, promoted, produced, signed talent and now in his 67th year wants to know why some folk think he’s too old to make records. As he says, ‘The world may not be waiting for what I do, but it makes me happy and whether there are 2, 22, 222,or 2 million people listening I’m just happy to try and create something that will touch peoples heart and soul.'

Greasepaint, Guest Lecture by Dr Hannah Levene | University of Exeter, Penryn Campus
Mar 17, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Penryn
This seminar, as part of the Queer Theory module at HaSS Cornwall, will consider ‘coalitional aurality’ as discussed by queer musicologist Elliot H Powell to help read the novel Greasepaint by Hannah Levene. Powell argues that tuning into ‘resonance’ can lead to ‘unexpected, unintended, and uneven’ connections. We will focus on the novel’s relationship between ‘butch’ understood as queer masculinities and Yiddish, discussing the history of the Yiddish language, its cultural moorings in anarchism and the ways in which the properties of the Yiddish language, especially as it was employed by Yiddish anarchists, resonate with Powell’s idea of coalitional aurality. We will put Powell’s resonant theories into practice via a homophonic translation workshop. Bio of Dr Hannah Levene: Hannah Levene is a writer living in Norwich, UK. Her novel Greasepaint was published by Nightboat Books in February 2024. She has a PhD in Creative Writing from Roehampton University exploring The Composition of New Butch Literature. Various prose, poetry and conversations have been published at Lit Hub, Bomb Mag, Fruit Journal, Hotel, Data Bleed, Blackbox Manifold, and FENWOMEN. She is currently working on a collaborative novel with D Mortimer titled Abraham’s Bosom. Essential readings: Elliott H. Powell. ‘Coalitional Auralities: Notes on a Soundtrack to Punks, Bulldaggers, and Welfare Queens’, GLQ: A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies, Volume 25, Number 1, January 2019, pp. 188-193Hannah Levene.
