MOCA Jacksonville: Hyperlocal Art History | MOCA Jacksonville
Jan 17, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Jacksonville
Join UNF Professor of Art History, Dr. Scott Brown, as he leads a captivating series of talks at MOCA Jacksonville, in celebration of its 100th anniversary. These talks provide a unique perspective on the history of art from the standpoint of North Florida. This region holds significant historical importance, being home to ancient Indigenous cultures and the oldest European settlements in continental North America – Fort Caroline and St. Augustine. Notably, Fort Caroline briefly housed Jacques LeMoyne de Morgue, considered the first "American" artist. His remarkable paintings of the First Coast, engraved by Theodor de Bry in the 1580s, represent some of the earliest works of "American" art.
The Castillo San Marcos in St. Augustine is another noteworthy site, as one of the oldest masonry-built structures in North America and a popular historic destination in the South. Additionally, during the period of 1870-1930 when North Florida flourished as America's winter resort, renowned American artists such as Winslow Homer, Martin Johnson Heade, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and John Singer Sargent lived and created art in Jacksonville-St. Augustine.
Jacksonville also played a pivotal role in the motion picture industry and hosted a groundbreaking art exhibition in 1924, organized by the Women's Club and the Jacksonville Fine Art Society (the precursor to MOCA). This exhibition showcased modern art, the first of its kind in the American South, featuring leading avant-garde artists like Marsden Hartley, Joseph Stella, Pablo Picasso, and Diego Rivera. The show generated immense excitement and sparked debates about art, beauty, and the future of Jacksonville.
Dr. Scott Brown will cover these fascinating topics and more in his series of talks, exploring art history from the Renaissance to the present day, with a focus on the local context. Don't miss the opportunity to gain insights into the art that shaped Jacksonville and its place in the broader artistic landscape.
