His remarkable paintings of the First Coast, engraved by Theodor de Bry in the 1580s, represent some of the earliest works of "American" art. The Castillo San Marcos in St. Augustine is another noteworthy site, as one of the oldest masonry-built structures in North America and a popular historic destination in the South. Additionally, during the period of 1870-1930 when North Florida flourished as America's winter resort, renowned American artists such as Winslow Homer, Martin Johnson Heade, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and John Singer Sargent lived and created art in Jacksonville-St. Augustine.
