Dacia Maraini, one of Italy's most important voices and a feminist pioneer, was born in 1936 in Fiesole near Florence. Growing up in Japan and later in Sicily, she settled in Rome in the 1950s. Maraini was one of the first to shed light on violence against women and pioneered experimental theater. She collaborated with P. P. Pasolini on film projects in Africa and wrote screenplays, including for Margarethe von Trotta. Maraini has authored numerous novels, short stories (including those for children), and poetic works. Her debut novel, "La vacanza," published in 1962, became an international bestseller, translated into over a dozen languages.
