Charles Gaines: Numbers and Trees: Baobabs of Tanzania | Hauser & Wirth
Feb 19–May 24, 2025 (UTC-8)
West Hollywood
Charles Gaines, an 80-year-old artist and educator from Los Angeles, is widely acclaimed for his contributions to the development of conceptual art and the formation of the Los Angeles art scene.
This exhibition, the artist's first solo exhibition in Los Angeles since 2019, will present a series of new acrylics and watercolors as an elaboration of his iconic series "Numbers and Trees".
Trees have been central to Gaines's work since the mid-1970s. He first painted trees through a numbered grid system in the "Walnut Orchard" series. This methodological experimentation continued in the "Numbers and Trees" series, which began in 1987, hinting at the arbitrariness of other manufactured systems in our society - such as politics, gender, race and class.

Gabriele Evertz: Colors Make Light | Louis Stern Fine Arts
2025年3月15日–5月3日 (UTC-8)
West Hollywood
Louis Stern Fine Arts presents Gabriele Evertz: Colors Make Light, the Brooklyn-based artist’s first solo presentation with the gallery.Born and raised near Berlin, Germany, Evertz (b. 1945) identifies as a color painter, and wields her extensive historical and theoretical knowledge of the subject in pursuit of sensorially joyous outcomes. Despite a precise and disciplined methodology, which fuses the scientific order of the color wheel with the exacting geometry of angle and line, her paintings are not dispassionate in intent or effect but are instead deeply concerned with emotional response. The relationship between the painter and her canvas, and in turn between the painting and the viewer, is a private exploratory experience focused around the pleasures of being a living, sensing creature.

Xiao JiangBy the WindowXiao JiangBy the Window | West Hollywood
2025年4月11日–5月31日 (UTC-8)
West Hollywood
Xiao Jiang's oil paintings are mostly based on his daily life scenes - mainly landscapes and interior landscapes - and unfold the narrative through the silent language of colors and shapes. In the exhibition "By the Window", the artist continues his consistent method of transcending time and depicting eternal landscapes, while adding attention to the fleeting moment - the light and shadow of the moment flash by, but are captured by the picture.

Bonnie Tsui, with Charles Yu, discusses On Muscle | Book Soup
Apr 28, 2025 (UTC-7)
West Hollywood
From the bestselling author of Why We Swim comes a mind-expanding exploration of muscle--from our ancient obsession with the ideal human form to the modern science of this amazing and adaptable tissue--that will change the way you think about what moves us through the world.
In On Muscle, Bonnie Tsui brings her signature blend of science, culture, immersive reporting, and personal narrative to examine not just what muscles are but what they mean to us. Cardiac, smooth, skeletal--these three different types of muscle in our bodies make our hearts beat; push food through our intestines, blood through our vessels, babies out the uterus; attach to our bones and allow for motion. Tsui also traces how muscles have defined beauty--and how they have distorted it--through the ages, and how they play an essential role in our physical and mental health.
Tsui introduces us to the first female weightlifter to pick up the famed Scottish Dinnie Stones, then takes us on a 50-mile run through the Nevada desert that follows the path of escape from a Native boarding school--and gives the concept of endurance new meaning. She travels to Oslo, where cutting-edge research reveals how muscles help us bounce back after injury and illness, an important aspect of longevity. She jumps into the action with a historic Double Dutch club in Washington, D.C., to explain anew what Charles Darwin meant by the brain-body connection. Woven throughout are stories of Tsui's childhood with her Chinese immigrant artist dad--a black belt in karate--who schools her from a young age in a kind of quirky, in-house Muscle Academy.
On Muscle shows us the poetry in the physical, and the surprising ways muscle can reveal what we're capable of.

Peter Wolf discusses Waiting on the Moon | Book Soup
Apr 30, 2025 (UTC-7)
West Hollywood
In the tradition of classic collections of observations and musings such as Christopher Isherwood's
I Am a Camera
and Truman Capote's
The Dogs Bark
,
Waiting on the Moon
is a treasure trove of vignettes from a legendary musical figure whose career spans more than six decades and is still going strong.
Peter Wolf grew up in the Bronx, a child of "fellow travelers" whose artistic inclinations influenced both his love of music and his initial desire to become a painter. Stories of his loving and sometimes eccentric parents complement scenes depicting a very young Bob Dylan as he arrived on the Greenwich Village folk scene. Reflections on Wolf's studies in Boston--where he shared an apartment with David Lynch--are braided with accounts of first love, an untraditional literary education, and early musical influences such as Muddy Waters.
After Wolf joined the J. Geils Band as their front man and his musical fame grew, he rubbed shoulders with other notables who left significant impressions on him, including members of the Rolling Stones, Sly Stone, Tennessee Williams, Alfred Hitchcock, and Van Morrison. Wolf's marriage to Faye Dunaway is presented in a clear yet balanced and nuanced light.
Told with gentle humor and often heart-rending poignancy, the word portraits in Waiting on the Moon provide a revealing glimpse of artists, writers, actors, and musicians as they work--the creative forces that drive them to achievement; the demons they battle; the patterns of their human relationships. They are meant to inspire not only empathy but also admiration. Like Isherwood, Wolf remains "a camera with its shutter open."
Eddie Gorodetsky is an acclaimed Emmy Award winning television writer and producer who’s numerous credits include, to name just a few, Co-Creator of the TV show Mom, Co -creator of Theme Time Radio Hour with Bob Dylan and former disc jockey at WBCN with Peter Wolf.

Community First: Run Clubs Then & Now | HEIMAT
Apr 30, 2025 (UTC-8)

Los Angeles is in the midst of a running boom, but the culture behind it has been years in the making. This conversation will explore how run clubs have built lasting communities across diverse neighborhoods, both online and in person. From early pioneers to the latest generation of leaders, we’ll dive into what fuels these movements and their impact on the city. Hosted by veteran entertainment journalist and Running Sucks 101 author Raziq Rauf, who has been embedded in LA’s running scene for over a decade, the discussion brings together key voices shaping the culture. Panelists include Kit John, founder of Movement Runners (2011), Erik Valientes, founder of Blacklist LA (2013), Zaakiyah Brisker, co-founder of South Central Run Club (2020), and Richard Lin, director of Lombardy Run Club (2023), each sharing how running has connected people, shaped identities, and redefined LA’s streets.
