Menopause symptoms can derail careers, disrupt relationships, and cause unnecessary suffering. This film presents evidence-based solutions to challenge the negativity associated with menopause and empowers women to take control of their health. Women of all walks of life open up about the physical and mental anguish they live with every day. Melting Ice | Rising Tides: Art and Environment Symposium | The Burton at Bideford

Jun 27, 2025 (UTC+1)
Bideford
Cultural Experiences
In a world that is fast changing as a result of global warming, what is the role of art and artists in capturing this change? What responsibility do arts organisations have to engage audiences and encourage action on environmental issues? ‘Melting Ice | Rising Tides’ is an exhibition by Royal Academician Emma Stibbon at The Burton at Bideford (10 May – 5 July 2025). It considers how the warming environment of the polar regions is impacting on the changing UK coastline, and makes connections between the remote extremes of our planet and our more familiar local landscapes. Polar ice melt can seem like an overwhelming idea – too far away to conceive, too big to be able to make a difference. Emma Stibbon observes and records the precariousness of polar ice sheets and glaciers, and the profound effect that melting ice is having on global sea level rise. This symposium brings the themes of ‘Melting Ice| Rising Tides’ into a scholarly context for audiences interested in the intersection of art and the environment. The day-long event brings together artists, scientists, academics, curators, arts organisations and local environmental agencies to ground the conversations in the practicalities of local landscapes and action. The Burton at Bideford is located in a designated National Landscape and part of the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The ‘Melting Ice | Rising Tides’ symposium is supported by Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art and The Friends of The Burton. RNLI Appledore Evening Cruise on MS Oldenburg 2025 | EX39 2EY

Evening Cruise on MS Oldenburg Following the popularity of the evening cruise on the MS Oldenburg last year, RNLI Appledore Guild has arranged for the Lundy Landmark Trust and the MS Oldenburg to organise a further summer evening cruise in support of Appledore Lifeboat and the RNLI, celebrating the 200th anniversary of Appledore Lifeboat. There will be live music, a licensed bar and a very special RNLI atmosphere. Passengers joining the evening cruise should dress for the weather on the day and remember it can cool down quickly when sun sets out on the water. All drinks must be purchased from the bar but passengers may bring their own picnics. All proceeds from the evening will help support the RNLI. Following Sir William Hillary’s inaugural meeting of the Institution in1824, 12 lifeboats were ordered to be built by William Plenty of Newbury. Sir Charles Chalmers formed the Bideford Branch Association and successfully appealed to the Institution for one of the first lifeboats to be stationed at Appledore. On 28th February 1825 the first lifeboat to be built arrived in Appledore. The boat was named the Volunteer, it was 18 foot long, weighed one ton and was pulled by four oarsmen. The MS Oldenburg was launched on 29 March 1958 to serve as a ferry to the Frisian Islands, Germany. The ship was sold to the Lundy Co in 1985, it was refurbished at Appledore Shipbuilders and has since provided a regular summer service from Bideford and Ilfracombe to Lundy.
