Artist Statement & Bio Writing | The Mill Gallery
Jul 30, 2025 (UTC+0)
Mill
Do you dread writing about your work? You’re not alone. This workshop is designed to help artists of all disciplines craft clearer, more authentic artist statements and bios that reflect both their creative voice and professional identity. We’ll explore what makes an effective artist statement and how it can evolve depending on context—whether it’s for a funding application, exhibition, publication, or your website. You’ll be guided through exercises that help you identify the core themes, questions, and materials in your practice, and how to express them in a way that feels honest and engaging without becoming overly academic or abstract. In the second half, we’ll tackle writing your artist bio—short, punchy, and to the point, but still full of personality. You'll leave the session with a stronger sense of your artistic voice, a solid draft of your statement and bio, and tips for keeping them fresh and adaptable for future use. This is a relaxed, no-judgement space where experimentation and messy first drafts are encouraged. Bring a notebook, your past statements (if you have them), and an openness to rethinking how you present your practice. This workshop is heavily subsidised, but not free, thanks to the generous funding from Leeds Council. In order to keep the workshop accessible to all, we offer three ticket tiers based on your income: £5, £10, and £15, plus the Eventbrite booking fee. Furniture Upcycling for Neurodivergent Adults | Leigh Spinners Mill
Sep 13, 2025 (UTC+0)
Mill
Reet Good Wood CIC is a creative group specifically for Neurodivergent adults who have had a late diagnosis, are waiting for a diagnosis or are not seeking one but identify as being neurodivergent. For people who have 'managed' to get through life without any kind of support - this space is for you. Unfortunately we do not meet criteria for formal support but being around other people like you is massively important. Ruth, who runs Reet Good Wood, offers this workshop at her studio on Floor 5 of Spinners Mill in Leigh Ruth says... Being Neurodivergent has many challenges. It can be quite isolating at times and some people often feel misunderstood, like they don’t ’fit in’ and can struggle to thrive in a world suited to neurotypical people. Last year I found my calm in the chaos that goes on in my brain as a neurodivergent adult. I found this sense of calm by Upcycling wooden furniture. It gave me an outlet and massively improved my mental health and emotional wellbeing. So, I thought, why not share it with other Neurodivergent adults!? There is very little support out there when you're waiting for a diagnosis and very little afterwards, and although some people might not need it, for others being around other neurodivergent people can help massively. It can give a sense of belonging, provide a safe space to be your authentic self, in a space where you don’t have to worry about being judged or mistreated. In this session you get to have a go at an activity we feel is really beneficial to our health. We provide small pieces of furniture for you to work on, all paints and materials needed. Come and have a go at this relaxing and creative activity. By offering a workshop at a weekend it means the building is quiet, and we can create more bespoke working and teaching experiences. This workshop is for adults of any gender identity, who consider themselves to be neurodivergent. You do need to be able to work independently as you will be expected to be able to work unsupervised at times, to keep yourself safe and to be able to do your own furniture painting. Group size is limited to 6 places. Demand for these sessions is quite high so if you can not make it please cancel your booking in advance to allow other people to book. If you want a video or any more information about the workshop space, or want to visit first - that can be arranged. Drinks, biscuits and great company all included. Lunch is not provided but we do have a microwave and fridge if you want to bring your own. We do provide drinks and biscuits :)
These sessions are located in a workshop environment so please wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty / paint on. Please arrive on time to start at 11:30am.
