Dublin
Barry The Fish Meltonwas the co-founder ofCountry Joe and the Fish, one of the most influential groups to come from the San Francisco scene. In May 1967, they released their debut album, Electric Music For The Mind & Body . It was a chart success and stil consistently charting in lists of the top psychedelic albums ever made. It's never been out of print. In 1967 - the “Summer of Love” - Country Joe and the Fish played the Monterey Pop Festival with such luminaries as The Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother & The Holding Compan (with Janis Joplin), The Mamas and Papas, Otis Redding, Ravi Shankar, Simon and Garfunkel, The Steve Miller Band, The Who and Jimi Hendrix. After a superb performance (check out D.A.Pennebaker's film Monterey Pop ) Country Joe & The Fish were in great demand, and toured arenas, concert halls, and stadiums throughout Europe and North America. Theirmost famous appearance was at 1969's historic Woodstock Festival, before half a million people. where part of their performance was immortalised in the film of the same name. Country Joe and the Fish split up in 1971, but occasionally regrouped to play together. In 1976 they shared the bill with Bob Marley and The Wailers at a stadium gig in Cardiff, Wales. They released two reunion albums in 1977 and 1994. Since then Country Joe McDonald retired and two other members died. Only Barry Melton and keyboard player David Bennett Cohen are now still active After Country Joe and The Fish split, Barry released a series of excellent solo albums, and also recorded with top Welsh rockers Man at Rockfield Studios in Wales, and toured with them on many occasions. He then put together San Francisco’s historic supergroup, Dinosaurs, which also featured John Cipollina (Quicksilver Messenger Service) on 2nd lead guitar, Spencer Dryden (Jefferson Airplane) on drums, Peter Albin (Big Brother and the Holding Company) on bass guitar and Robert Hunter (songwriter for The Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan collaborator) on rhythm guitar. Brian Brody and The Ghost Ensemble | Rathfarnham Castle
May 22, 2025 (UTC+0)
Dublin
Brian Brody & The Ghost Ensemble is the brainchild of Dublin songwriter Brody, and classical composer Simon Quigley. Join themfor a full performance of their new album Anima Animus, due for release on May 1st 2025. Brian and The Ghost Ensemble believe the songs on their new album, Anima Animus represent the masculine and feminine that each person possesses within them. The album provokes and entices the listener to relate to and let go of any shackles that restrict them to feelings that perhaps are locked away due to unknown reasons. With a cinematic approach to the song writing and composition, each song on the album takes a very visual stance, inviting the listener to get to know characters in songs like Painting Skies, the lovelorn artist painter involved in his own ghost story, or the girl in the Italian sung song Solo lei lo Sa, the almost mystical story of a girl who dances with the sun and the moon. Songs can take a darker turn, such as This Hell I Roam, the story of a man living homeless, and the struggles he faces from moment to moment living on the streets. The album takes many twists and turns, and with its lush lyrical and musical endeavour, Brian and the ensemble invite you to embrace the story telling on the album and with some hope, the listener can understand the Anima and Animus that lies within us all.

Dublin
The Sugar Club Harp Sessions features the most exciting, cool harpers – some with friends – who are pushing the boundaries of Irish harping. Experience a new ‘take’ on Irish harping from some of our foremost young harpers. Cruit Éireann | Harp Ireland’s Sugar Club Harp Sessions feature innovative, cutting-edge Irish harp performances from players who are pushing the boundaries of the tradition in new and exciting ways. Our Sugar Club Harp Sessions concert on Saturday 24th May features Alannah Thornburgh and Gemma Doherty. Alannah Thornburgh is an award-winning harper and composer. Her music explores her family’s musical heritage, reimagining ancient airs and tunes from the Irish harping and American folk & jazz traditions. This cross-genre interaction and juxtaposition of old melodies with contemporary harmonies and technique, carries through her original compositions, creating an innovative style described as ‘unforced, fluid & utterly at home in her own sound’ (The Irish Times). Alannah released her debut album ‘Shapeshifter’ in February. Alannah is a founding member of the band Alfi, a trio who combine music & song sourced from the folk traditions of Ireland & America to produce a unique sound described as “beautiful, tear-jerking musicianship” (Bristol in Stereo). Gemma Doherty is a composer, harper and singer from Derry City. Currently working on her first solo album, she combines contemporary with experimental Irish folk/traditional, centering around the harp with electronics and effects. As one half of electronic-folk duo Saint Sister, she has released two critically acclaimed albums - receiving Best Album in N.I. Music Prize and nominations for Album of the Year in Choice Music Prize and RTÉ Folk Awards. Recent screen work includes additional composition on Kneecap (Feature), Ogham, Fadó Fadó (Shorts), Camera Tripod Bicycle (TV Doc). Nomads on Screen: Psychoanalysing the 21st Century Subject Beyond Borders | DCU All Hallows Campus
May 24, 2025 (UTC+0)
Dublin
On three Saturday afternoons – 12th April, 24th May, and 14th June – the IPFF and DCU Centre for Possibility Studies will host a special series of films, 'WItches', 'Nomadland' and 'In the Real', respectively, examining the theme of the subjectivity of the contemporary nomad through the lens of psychoanalysis. Each screening will be presented by a scholar/psychoanalyst/filmmaker, followed by a Q&A and discussion. All welcome. Presenters/scholars will include Professor Valerie Heffernan (Maynooth University), psychotherapist and scholar Dr Angie Voela and psychotherapist(UEL), scholar and film-maker Conor McCormack (CFAR, Bristol) From the Greek nemo (pasture) the term ‘nomad’ originally described pastoral people as well as groups without permanent abode. As such nomadic groups have been defined in relation to absolute or irregular mobility. The Nomad in the philosopher Gilles Deleuze’s thought is a symbol of freedom, fluidity, and non-conformity to rigid structures or territories. Rather than being defined by stable identities or fixed points (as “sedentary” people or societies often are), the nomad represents movement, multiplicity, and ‘becoming’. In our time, large groups of people still have to move themselves to flee war, famine, and torture; what we think of as the migrant diaspora of the discontents of our so-called civilisations. At the level of the singular we see and hear the accounts of those who are deemed to ‘belong’ outside/outwith the social order, what Lacan called the Symbolic. Thus evicted from the Symbolic order, the residue of their eviction leaves a trace in the Imaginary and in the Real.

Ballymuns Backyard Ultra | Trinity Comprehensive School
May 30, 2025 (UTC+0)
Ballymun
Ballymuns Backyard Ultra – Event Rules Welcome to Ballymun’s Backyard Ultra! Here’s a breakdown of how the race works: The course is a 500m asphalt track where each competitor must complete 13 loops (plus few meter s) to total the 6.7 kms needed to complete the Yard and each runner has 1 hour to complete it. Runners must return to the start line before the next hour begins to continue. The race repeats every hour, on the hour, until only one runner is left standing. The final runner must complete one extra loop after all others have stopped to be declared the winner. If no one finishes that last loop, there is no winner. Key rules to keep in mind: 1. Complete each loop within the hour. 2. All runners start at the same time each hour—no early or late starts. 3. No outside assistance is allowed during the loop (only between loops). 4. If you don’t make it back to the start line in time for the next lap, you’re out. This is a true test of endurance—physically and mentally. The goal is to see how far you can push yourself. Good luck, and let’s find out who will be the last one standing at Ballymun’s Backyard Ultra!
