Hosted by the Northeast Georgia Writers Group and the Hall County Library in Gainesville. A Writer's Journey – Although Mark has been writing for most of his life, the road to book publication has been a long journey fraught with disappointments. It took more than thirty years to get his first book published. Today, eighteen books later, Mark been honored by the Spur Awards, the Will Rogers Medallion Awards, The Historical Novel Society, the New Mexico - Arizona Book Awards, the Peacemaker Awards, and in 2022, Mark was named a Georgia Author of the Year for his novel Song of the Horseman (Literary Fiction Finalist.) The other is a long, plodding journey on an over-used trail that has been trampled into mire. Mark's career as a naturalist and teacher of primitive skills makes itself known in each of his novels, making true the adage that suggests write about what you know. His research into Native Americans and the history of the American West has guided him toward projects about some of our most controversial Western personalities. His historical fiction novels are some of his most notable award-winners, and Mark can offer some advice for researching and writing in this genre. Find out more about Mark Warren and the road he traveled to become an award-winning writer in this personal and candid talk. Mark Warren Bio: Mark Warren is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Georgia. At Medicine Bow, his nationally renowned wilderness school in the mountains of Dahlonega, GA, he teaches nature classes and primitive survival skills. In 1980, The National Wildlife Federation named him Georgia’s Conservation Educator of the Year. In 1998 Mark became the U.S. National Champion in whitewater canoeing, and in 1999 he won the World Championship Longbow title. Mark has written extensively about nature for local and national magazines and has researched Western frontier history for more than 50 years presenting at museums and cultural centers around the country. He has 18 traditionally published books. He has been honored by the Spur Awards, The Historical Novel Society, the Will Rogers Medallion Awards, The New Mexico – Arizona Book Awards, and in 2022 Mark was honored with a Georgia Author of the Year Award for his book Song of the Horseman (Literary Fiction Finalist.) Join the public reception for the "Speech(less): In Defiance of War" art exhibition by Pomidor Art Team, a duo known for exploring censorship of anti-war activities in Russia. This solo exhibition, open throughout October and possibly beyond, is the team's first in the United States. The exhibition, divided into three parts, delves into the artists' reflections on silence, fearlessness, and intimidation in the face of war and oppressive regimes. The first part, "Speech(less)," focuses on the loss of freedom of expression and the impact of silence. Hand-sewn flags with quotes from various sources, including news stories, serve as powerful visual representations. The second part, "Fearless," pays tribute to individuals who bravely spoke out against the war and the regime, only to be persecuted and imprisoned. The final part, "Headless," addresses intimidation and propaganda, using shirts without head cutouts to symbolize the suppression of critical thinking. The artists aimed to create a new type of flag that highlights peace, anti-war movements, decolonization, and justice, placing the individual's voice above the nation's. Pomidor Art Team, consisting of Polina Egorushkina and Maria Sarkisiants, left Russia in 2022 and are using this exhibition as an opportunity to speak out against the unlawful war and oppressive regime they witnessed. The replica flags displayed at Pennant Place ensure that their message reaches a wider audience.
