Anna Chorlton - Cornish Folk Tales Come join us for a captivating evening with Anna Chorlton , giant wrangler, piskie spyer and all-round expert on Cornish folk tales. West Cornwall is a land of tin-mine strewn cliffs and safe south harbours, with all the bustle of ships, fishing boats, gigs, industry, and tourists. The beaches are blessed with stretching sands, and tempting surf, stunning caves and rock formations, a sea lido, and a theatre beside the ocean. Along the cliffs lurk grumpy giants, playful piskeys and hungry dragons. The middle of Cornwall is clay country and farming. In the towns live wise women, dashing devils, strong wrestlers and fearless hurlers. Beware hissing spriggins, seducing sea women and restless ghosts. Let your imagination play with the spirit of West Penwith and immerse your mind in the stories within it. Capturing the magic of Cornwall, folklore writer Anna Chorlton retells its tales and introduces her new book Cornish Folk Tales of Place: Traditional Stories from Mid and West Cornwall. The talk will be followed by a Q and A and then Anna will be signing copies of her books. Ticket price includes a complimentary drink. Join us and see how we transform our bookshop into a special evening event space. Limited tickets, so book now. Information Source: The Edge of the World Bookshop Ltd | eventbrite

NEWLYN WALKING TOURS WITH NEWLYN ART GALLERY DIRECTOR THU 17 APR / 10 JUL / 21 AUG / 18 SEP 2025 10.30 - 16.00, Newlyn Art Gallery Join us for a unique behind-the-scenes tour of Newlyn's back streets, where you'll meet local artists, explore historic studios and workshops, and uncover the village’s fascinating, often hidden, past. As both a thriving fishing port and a home for contemporary artists, Newlyn’s story blends its industrial roots with a vibrant cultural heritage. Led by Newlyn Art Gallery’s Director, James Green, and long-time Newlyn resident and Gallery team member Kathy Hill, this tour offers an insider’s look at the village’s history. For over 150 years, Newlyn has been a haven for artists, and you'll discover how today’s leading creatives continue to be inspired by its unique landscape. We’ll also visit studios that have been in continuous use for more than 130 years and delve into the Newlyn Tidal Observatory’s remarkable century-long collection of tidal data, still vital to modern climate research and artistic inspiration. During the tour, we’ll explore the current artistic life of the village while reflecting on its rich industrial and cultural heritage. Hear stories of how Newlyn’s environment has shaped the work of local artists in unexpected ways, and enjoy rare insights into the life of the gallery itself. The tour begins at Newlyn Art Gallery at 10:30 AM, where you'll be welcomed with coffee and cake at our scenic Garden Café. The day concludes back at the gallery at 4:00 PM. Important Information This walking tour involves frequent stops and Newlyn’s steep hills, side streets, and potentially slippery harbour areas. If you have accessibility needs, please let us know in advance, and we will do our best to accommodate you. Please wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for the weather, as the walk will go ahead if a little light rain or mizzle is forecast, but we will cancel if heavy rain or wind are forecast as it's not not very enjoyable walking around in the rain all day. We will make a decision based on the weather three days before the date of the tour, so please leave your mobile number and an email address so we can contact you should we need to cancel. What past participants have said: Thank you for such an enjoyable day yesterday! A really enriching experience—we learned so much about Newlyn’s history and heritage. £95 per person, 'early bird booking' if you book by Monday 6 Jan 2025 £120 per person, limited to ten participants, booking essential.
