Jo Lloyd and Ponch Hawkes: Know my Name Artists in conversation | Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery
Feb 7, 2024 (UTC+10)ENDED
Mornington
Join MPRG’s Curator Dunja Rmandic in a conversation with exhibiting artists Jo Lloyd and Ponch Hawkes as part of the Know My Name exhibition. This engaging discussion will delve into their artistic practices, explore themes of visibility and legacies, and shed light on the cultural landscape of Australia. Ponch Hawkes, an influential Australian photographer, captures key moments in Australia's cultural and social histories since the 1970s. Through her work, she explores intergenerational relationships, queer identity, LGBTQI+ rights, the female body, masculinity, and women in the workplace. Hawkes often exhibits her photographs as series or multiples, inviting the subjects to actively participate in the process. This approach allows her to delve into how individuals utilize their bodies and relate to one another. One of Hawkes' notable series, "Our mums and us," documents her friends standing alongside their mothers and was first exhibited in 1976. Jo Lloyd, a Melbourne-based dance artist, approaches choreography as a social encounter. Her practice challenges the limits of history, form, and aesthetic, seeking to find a language that transcends these boundaries. Lloyd's work has been showcased nationally and internationally, including in Japan and New Zealand. As part of the Know My Name exhibition, Lloyd created the film and live work "Archive the Archive," which pays homage to Melbourne choreographer Phillipa Cullen. This powerful piece focuses on Cullen's extraordinary contemporary dance practice, tragically cut short by her untimely death. Don't miss the opportunity to gain insights into the artistic journeys of these talented artists.
