Robert Macfarlane: Is a River Alive? | Bram & Bluma Appel Salon
May 26, 2025 (UTC-5)
Street
Celebrated writer, observer and naturalist Robert Macfarlane joins us to discuss his brilliant, perspective-shifting new book, Is a River Alive?, which answers a resounding yes to the question of its title.
Around the world, rivers are dying from pollution, drought and damming. But a powerful movement is also underway to recognize the lives and the rights of rivers, and to re-animate our relationships with these vast, mysterious presences whose landscapes we share. The young rights of nature movement has lit up activists, artists, law-makers and politicians across six continents—and become the focus for revolutionary thinking about rivers in particular. A clarion call to re-centre rivers in our stories, law and politics, Is a River Alive? invites us to radically re-imagine not only rivers but life itself. At the heart of this vital, beautiful book is the recognition that our fate flows with that of rivers—and always has. In conversation with Alanna Mitchell. Q&A and book signing to follow. Books available for purchase. Ticket registration for this event is required: Free tickets for this event are available to book via Eventbrite. He will also talk about the legacy of Tutankhamun and Cleopatra and how the colonial nature of archaeology shapes our understanding of ancient Egypt Dr Campbell Price received a BA, MA and PhD in Egyptology from the University of Liverpool, where now he is an Honorary Research Fellow. Since 2011, he has been Curator of Egypt and Sudan at Manchester Museum, part of the University of Manchester, one of the UK’s largest Egyptology collections. SIX CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF AN AUTHOR | Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimo' at NYU

Adapted and Directed by Nick Gabriel, Stage Manager Kevin Wang With Meridian Anastasia, Sophia Chacon, Feras Halabi, Finn Mackimmie, Isabella Kaplan, Michael Reese Shald, Sam Trott, Kevin Wang This original adaptation of Luigi Pirandello’s SIX CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF AN AUTHOR was originally conceived by author and director Nick Gabriel at the height of the CoVID-19 pandemic and further developed in response to the #metoo movement. Gabriel has recreated a version of this metatheatrical, Existentialist classic that is faithful to Pirandello’s original vision, while contemporizing the circumstances to reflect the current cultural zeitgeist. SYNOPSIS SIX CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF AN AUTHOR is populated with a group of actors and a director who are rehearsing a play called THE RULES OF THE GAME. Just as their rehearsal gets underway, six characters appear at the stage door. The characters that appear at the stage door are not characters in THE RULES OF THE GAME. They are characters in a different, unnamed, unfinished dramatic narrative and they demand that their stories be heard. Running Time: 75 min

Diamonds and Rust Poetry with Hannah Norris | Nottingham Central Library
May 15, 2025 (UTC+0)
Street
THE WORKSHOP: These creative writing poetry workshops, led by Hannah Norris, will encourage you to see and hear poetry everywhere: shopping lists, WhatsApps, pub toilet graffiti and conversations overheard on public transport. Together, we will find inspiration by unlocking clues from the works of traditional and contemporary poets, as well as mining from our own experiences and surroundings. You will be warmly welcomed to this supportive community, whether it’s your first time writing poetry or you have been writing it for many years. The sessions will take place on the first Thursday of every month and each month will have a different theme and set of prompts, which you are welcome to interpret as loosely as you like - or ignore altogether, in favour of your own creative impulses. Freedom is key here! THE TUTOR: Hannah Norris (she/her) describes herself as an ‘obsessive diary writer’ who turns this material into poetry. She started writing poetry to help navigate her grief following a bereavement. Hannah also loves to write about the foul-mouthed women in her family and the more mundane parts of life, from batch cooking to soulless retail parks. Hannah’s poetry has been featured in Left Lion, JARG, Streetcake, Postscript, Moonflake Press, Black Cat Poetry Press and on BBC Radio Merseyside. Hannah enjoys writing poetry that rips up the rulebook around rhyme, stanzas and line breaks. Her favourite poet is Hera Lindsay Bird. THE DETAILS: This event will be taking place at Nottingham Central Library. It's a very friendly group who often head to the pub afterwards. No experience needed! Contact admin@nottinghamwritersstudio.co.uk if you have any questions.
