Nestled in the heart of historic Chinatown, the Chinese Opera Teahouse is also the headquarters of arts non-profit organisation Chinese Theatre Circle. We offer the programme Sights and Sounds of Cantonese Opera (on Fridays, through booking only) which introduces the traditional art form of Chinese Opera to the public, accompanied by a refreshing pot of Chinese tea. Chinese Opera is renowned for its painted faces, elaborate embroidered costumes and graceful movements, but can be difficult for a newcomer to understand. We will explain the elements of Chinese Opera through a short talk and demonstration with Q&A in English, followed by a short performance of an excerpt from an opera classic. You can also take photographs with the performers in their beautiful costumes after the performance. In this workshop open to all ages and abilities, join us for a fabulous afternoon of Dragage, a collage and drawing workshop with drag artist Lolah. ALL ticket sales will go towards raising funds to save the Central YMCA, a vital community hub in the heart of London. Open to all ages, this in-person event will give you the opportunity to free up your creativity through quickfire warmups, dynamic collage activities and discussion. Based in the Central YMCA with its iconic Brutalist architecture, we will explore a variety of drawing and collage techniques through fun and dynamic creative exercises. Whether you're an experienced artist or just starting out, you are welcome to come along and have a go! During the workshop, you will have the opportunity to depict Lolah through mark-making and collage, with prompts and advice to guide you. We will work dynamically through playful drawing activities before we move onto longer poses, working with a combination of collage and mark-making. Through these activities, we will invite you to be active participants in an experimental format, exploring themes of recording and memory. We will provide all materials, but invite you to bring along anything you would like to use in your experimental collage creations. What is the Central YMCA? The Central YMCA is a vital community hub in Camden. It has long embraced the motto of serving the community from cradle to grave, offering vital services to children and young people, while also providing a unique social and wellbeing programme for older adults. The playschemes, PE lessons and after school clubs provide children with a 25m swimming pool, ceramics, painting, sports and day trips. On site, trained physios, therapists, personal trainers and many volunteers care for people with illnesses, injuries and disabilities. The LGBTQIA community depends on the club, with their Positive Health programme started in 1997 for exercise and HIV referral. The YMCA also hosts University College Hospital for their muscular rehabilitation classes and UCL for their swim club. 900 over-60s benefit from the older adults programme and the site also hosts a number of dance and martial arts clubs with hundreds of members who will struggle to find another venue. All of these people will never fully recover from the loss of this club and the precedent it sets for community centres in London. About your facilitator: Lolah is the drag personality of David Holah, a long term member of the Central YMCA. David Holah set up the pioneering fashion label BodyMap with business partner Stevie Stewart in 1982. During the 80’s and 90’s they became costume designers for Michael Clark and Company. BodyMap also designed clothing and prints for fashion brands including Goldie, Benetton and Fiorrucci. As an artist, Holah has exhibited work in numerous shows, galleries and public spaces. Holah currently works as a printmaking tutor in various colleges including Morley College and City Lit. Undecided?
