Led by local artist Rus Kitchin, this three-hour workshop delves into the principles of interventionist art and offers participants the opportunity to develop a small-scale proposal for a public art piece that challenges social norms or raises awareness about a specific issue.
During the workshop, participants will engage in activities such as brainstorming sessions and guided drafting of public art proposals, including sketches and rationales. The objective is to empower participants with the process of conceptualizing and crafting a meaningful public art proposal. By the end of the workshop, participants will have developed their own public art proposal, complete with a sketch and a written rationale.
The workshop begins with a 30-minute introduction that explores the power and history of interventionist art, providing participants with a comprehensive overview of significant art pieces and movements over time. This sets the foundation for the workshop and helps participants understand the impact of interventionist art in shaping conversations.
The workshop concludes with a showcase of proposed art ideas, allowing participants to share their rationales and engage in a closing discussion. The take-home materials include the participants' public art proposals, sketches, and written rationales, which have the potential to reshape public spaces and minds.
Interventionist Narratives: Making Public Art with a Message will take place on March 9, 2024, at the Hustle With Ease space in St Kilda.
