Poetry Reading: Chris McCabe and Nine Arches Press | Open Eye Gallery
Sep 7, 2025 (UTC+0)
Liverpool
Chris McCabe reads live for the Liverpool launch of his new book Hedonism. He will be joined by publisher Jane Commane from Nine Arches Press, one of the UK’s leading independent poetry publishers. The event gives a chance to hear McCabe and Commane in conversation, exploring the creative process of editing and sharing insights into how a book is made. Hedonism presents a carnival of characters including Bez from Happy Mondays, Jorge Louis Borges and a medieval pilgrim on a journey to buy a PlayStation, in McCabe’s sixth and most daring collection. Part-written in Scouse dialect and invented languages, Hedonism offsets the comic with the elegiac in a haunting and polyphonic work exploring the intersection of grief, place, memory and imagination. About Chris McCabe: Chris McCabe’s work spans artforms and genres including poetry, fiction, non-fiction, drama and visual art. His work has been shortlisted for the Ted Hughes Award and the Republic of Consciousness Prize. His most recent poetry collection, The Triumph of Cancer is a Poetry Book Society Recommendation and he is the editor of several anthologies including Poems from the Edge of Extinction: An Anthology of Poetry in Endangered Languages and The New Concrete: Visual Poetry in the 21st Century (with Victoria Bean). His novels are Dedalus and Mud. He is working on an epic series of psychogeographical prose books documenting the lost poets buried in London’s Victorian cemeteries, the latest of which is Buried Garden which was chosen as a White Review Book of the Year in 2022. His latest book is Dreamt by Ghosts published by Tenement Press. Image: Chris McCabe

Revolutionary Irish Dance Show | Liverpool | M&S Bank Arena
Jun 26, 2025 (UTC+0)
Liverpool
Created by Armstrong Dance, with original new music from Golden Globe-nominated composer Brian Byrne (Heartbeat of Home), Celtic Throne—Psalter of Ireland is guaranteed to be an experience unlike any other! Celtic Throne reflects the wide-ranging talents and interests of its creators and dancers. First and foremost, it’s an Irish dance show, with plenty of the fancy footwork and formidable stomps made world-famous by iconic shows like Riverdance, Lord of the Dance and Heartbeat of Home. “We adore these shows; they are an inspiration,” says director Brad Macdonald. “We wouldn’t be doing this if these amazing productions hadn’t blazed the trail for us. But Celtic Throne II is totally unique—we are blazing our own trail!” Watching beautiful, happy children, some as young as 7 and 8, dancing and playing music will melt your heart. Sensational gymnastics and martial arts will have you on the edge of your seat and remind you of watching the Olympics. Our live musicians electrify even the most reserved audiences, transporting them to a cozy Irish pub. The dance and music are enhanced by stunning costumes, an elaborate set, sensational lighting and special effects, and dramatic video storytelling on a gigantic, state-of-the-art LED screen. “Imagine taking a classic Irish dance show and blending it with a West End musical and a Hollywood movie,” says Macdonald. “This is what we have done with Celtic Throne—Psalter of Ireland. You won’t find better value for your money—it’s three experiences in one!” Our dancers range in age from 5 to 25. The troupe is comprised mostly of students from the Carey Academy, some of whom have placed highly in Worlds, All Irelands, Great Britain and North American Nationals, and other top Irish dance competitions.

Oct 23, 2018–Sep 6, 2028 (UTC)
Liverpool
Liverpool Mountain is Swiss-artist Ugo Rondinone’s first public artwork in the UK and the first of its kind in Europe. Inspired by naturally occurring Hoodoos (spires or pyramids of rock) and the art of meditative rock balancing, this 10-metre high sculpture stands within Mermaid Courtyard, outside Tate Liverpool on the Royal Albert Dock Liverpool. It consists of coloured rocks, stacked vertically which seem to defy gravity.
This outdoor sculpture marks the 10th anniversary of Liverpool European Capital of Culture, the 20th anniversary of Liverpool Biennial and the 30th anniversary of Tate Liverpool.
Commissioned by Liverpool Biennial and Tate Liverpool as part of the Liverpool 2018 events programme with support from Royal Albert Dock Liverpool.

Waterstones Liverpool welcomes Ela Lee and Hanako Footman | 12 College Ln
Jun 19, 2025 (UTC+1)
Liverpool
We are delighted to welcome
Ela Lee
and
Hanako Footman
who join us to discuss their widely acclaimed and thought-provoking novels
Jaded
and
Mongrel
which both look at the themes of consent, power, sex and desire.
Jaded
-
A multi-faceted and brave exploration of race, power and violence, Jaded finds a successful young woman's life irrevocably change after she is sexually attacked at work.
She did everything right. So why did it go so wrong?
Jade isn't even my real name. Jade began as my Starbucks name, because all children of immigrants have a Starbucks name.
Jade has become everything she ever wanted to be.
Successful lawyer. Dutiful daughter. Beloved girlfriend. Loyal friend.
Until one night, something terrible happens after a work event, and she starts to wonder if she really wants to be the person she’s become.
She’s learned to laugh when she’s felt like crying, opted to be invisible when she wanted to speak up and changed her identity to please people. But now Jade has to make a decision for herself. The question is, which is the right one?
This searing novel explores the strength we find in female friendship, the hope that lights up the dark moments and recovery that’s far from linear, and will leave you asking yourself: what would you have done in Jade’s situation?
Mongrel
-
In strikingly beautiful prose, Footman's luminous debut interweaves the stories of three women in suburban Surrey, London and Tokyo to explore grief, identity and the politics of desire.
Mei loses her Japanese mother at age six. Growing up in suburban Surrey, she yearns to fit in, suppressing not only her heritage but her growing desire for her best friend Fran.
Yuki leaves the Japanese countryside to pursue her dream of becoming a concert violinist in London. Far from home and in an unfamiliar city, she finds herself caught up in the charms of her older teacher.
Haruka attempts to navigate Tokyo's nightlife and all of its many vices, working as a hostess in the city's sex district. She grieves a mother who hid so many secrets from her, until finally one of those secrets comes to light . . .
Shifting between three intertwining narratives, Mongrel reveals a tangled web of desire, isolation, belonging and ultimately, hope.
After Ela and Hanako's dsicussion there will be an audience Q&A and then the chance to get your books signed.

reflects the wide-ranging talents and interests of its creators and dancers. First and foremost, it’s an Irish dance show, with plenty of the fancy footwork and formidable stomps made world-famous by iconic shows like
Riverdance,
Lord of the Dance
and
Heartbeat of Home
. “We adore these shows; they are an inspiration,” says director Brad Macdonald. “We wouldn’t be doing this if these amazing productions hadn’t blazed the trail for us. But
Celtic Throne II
is totally unique—we are blazing our own trail!”
Watching beautiful, happy children, some as young as 7 and 8, dancing and playing music will melt your heart.
“This is what we have done with
Celtic Throne—Psalter of Ireland.
You won’t find better value for your money—it’s three experiences in one!”
Our dancers range in age from 5 to 25. The troupe is comprised mostly of students from the Carey Academy, some of whom have placed highly in Worlds, All Irelands, Great Britain and North American Nationals, and other top Irish dance competitions.
