Manchester
Exhibitions
Come and look behind the scenes of Manchester’s publicly owned sculpture collection. Part exhibition, part research space, Out of the Crate delves into the un-tapped history of the collection. This is an opportunity to investigate sculpture through access to stored collections and archival material. Find out what’s in store and how we look after it, help unlock hidden stories about works we know very little about and explore how artworks might encourage conversation. We have about 400 sculptures from antiquity to the present day and, until recently, less than 5% were on display. As well as modern and contemporary works, there are 19th-century sculptures and works from earlier periods that have rarely been seen this century and are under-researched. On display are a large range of materials including marble, bronze, wood, glass, ceramic and paper, a variety of sizes and shapes and different techniques of making. From bronze medals decorated with reliefs to large-scale free-standing 3D works, you can now see around 30% of the sculpture collection here. In terms of representation, we should also consider who has and hasn’t been included in the collection.

We are delighted to welcome Jenn Ashworth back to the shop for the Manchester launch of her latest work, The Parallel Path. Jenn will be in conversation with Helen Mort Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: Burnt out and longing for an escape, Jenn Ashworth emerged from lockdown with a compulsive need to walk - and to walk away. Armed with little more than the knowledge imparted by a two-day orienteering course and a set of maps, she embarked on the most epic of English walks: Wainwright's Coast to Coast. Guided not just by Wainwright's writing but also by daily letters from her friend Clive - facing an epic journey of his own - Jenn's pilgrimage soon becomes more than just walking: a chance to reconnect and excavate, to re-engage with the act of caring for others and for oneself. But the walk's tricky terrain is not the only thing standing in Jenn's way. As days go by, her balance begins to fail her and the act of putting one foot in front the other becomes a new exercise in caution. When a vicious heatwave forces her to pause her expedition and gives her an opportunity to investigate the new limitations of her body, Jenn is confronted with a life-altering diagnosis - and a new path of self-discovery. About the author: Jenn Ashworth was born in Preston and studied at Cambridge and Manchester. Her novels include A Kind of Intimacy , The Friday Gospels and Fell . She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2018. In 2019 she published Notes Made While Falling , a memoir told in a series of essays, followed by the novel is Ghosted: A Love Story which was Shortlisted for the Portico Prize in 2022. She is a Professor of Writing at Lancaster University. Tickets are £4.00. Admission is free when purchasing a copy of the book. To make it even more exciting, each month you’ll have the chance to vote on 5 fantastic films, and the one with the most votes will be screened with the winner being revealed the day of the event. This month’s contenders are: Neptune Frost (2021, Rwanda) Quite unlike anything you will have seen before this Rwandan Afrofuturist musical epic in a which a band of “fourth dimensionally liberated” revolutionaries fight against The Authority to free mine workers from being exploited in a near future Burundi. High concept transgressive cinema executed with high quality, promising a glimpse at a brighter future for cinema as an artform free of market sensibilities and charged with telling totally unique stories. West Indies (1979, Mauritania) Birthed from four hundred years of colonial history, Med Hondo’s landmark musical comedy explosively dissects the roots and ramifications of slavery and displacement. Staged gorgeously on a to-scale recreation of a slave ship, Hondo plays with the form of cinema itself, drawing attention to its artificiality while he brings past and present together in an artistic redefining of what a movie musical can be. The Girl With The Red Scarf (1978, Turkey) A perfect example of the sumptuous romantic melodrama that can be found in the greatest Yeşilçamfilms from Turkey’s golden age of cinema, once a major powerhouse for film production this era is all but lost in discussion outside of Turkey and sadly so. This film sees a young man and woman fall in love and then face the trials of love and loss with incredibly dazzling drama. Ali, Fear Eats the Soul (1974, Germany) Emmi, an elderly German lady, meets and falls in love with Ali, a young Moroccan manual labourer in Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s beautifully melancholic story of forbidden romance and the suffocating nature of societal norms. A thoughtful, empathetic look at the damages caused by anti-immigrant rhetoric. Stir (1980, Australia) Based off true events, this Australian prison drama is a bleak look at a justice system pushed to its limits treated inmates with disdain and cruelty. We see the buildup to chaos and we see the aftermath of chaos as tensions rise between prisoners and officers in the harshest of conditions. Vote for your favourite film here!! Cultural Experiences
We are delighted to welcome John Niven back to Deansgate in celebration of his new novel, The Fathers . Scalpel-sharp yet laced with compassion, this wry look at modern fatherhood from the author of Kill Your Friends finds the lives of two very different dads brought together by unexpected tragedy. John joins us to discuss his work and answer audience questions, followed by a signing. About The Fathers In a busy maternity ward, first-time father Dan meets Jada, a dad welcoming his fifth - no, sixth? - child into the world. Dan and Jada come from very different places: both called Glasgow. Dan is a successful TV writer with a townhouse in the West End and a shiny Tesla ready to drive his wife and baby home. Jada is a hustling, small-time criminal who is already planning how to separate Dan from some of the luxuries Jada has never been able to enjoy in his tiny flat in a Brutalist sixties council block. Both men find that the birth of their sons has fired their ambitions. Dan plans to walk away from his saccharine TV success and finally knuckle down to writing that novel he always felt he had in him. While, for Jada, it's the opportunity for one last get-rich-quick scheme - ripping off a local airport. When a tragedy occurs, their worlds are brought closer than either could ever have imagined - close enough that it could mean destruction for both of them . . . About the author JOHN NIVEN is the author of eleven novels, including Kill Your Friends, The Second Coming and Straight White Male. He has written a memoir, O Brother, and as a screenwriter his credits include The Trip, Kill Your Friends and How to Build a Girl. Information Source: Waterstones | eventbrite
