As long as you come with an open mind, and try not to pressure yourself to create a masterpiece but focus on experimenting and learning, thats the main thing :-) How to get here: The Clubhouse at Sealanes - if you go into the cafe, and then come out the back, you'll see this building! I started teaching watercolours in March 2023 which is exciting because its been more than a year now! Multiple times week I run beginner watercolour classes where each session we have a different theme, generally to do with nature. This year I'm looking forward to running day courses, or some courses that span over a few weeks where we can get really stuck in to a particular subject. My background is in illustration which I studied in Bristol from 2016 - 2019. I have previously worked in a bit of editorial illustration under the name 'Zara Wilkins'. The thing I love most about watercolours is that it is so versatile. There are so many different ways it can be used, so many effects that you can create with different levels of water, pigment, paper weights and brushes. There doesn't really seem to be an end to what you can do with it. Teaching continues to be such a fun experience and I really look forward to every class I run. These rare and always sold-out classes are designed for existing comedians of all levels to finesse skills beyond those taught at standard multi-date comedy courses. While compèring is easily acknowledged as another branch of the standup skillset, there are specific requirements of this that must be focused on, on top of those used in a standard standup performance. This one day, intensive course aims to cover all of those in a way that elevates compères of all levels. This workshop is aimed at existing standup comedians who want to hit the ground running with their compèring, and existing compères who may find some areas of their skillset requires fine tuning or improvement. Areas covered includes the advantages of attaining this ability, where it varies from straight standup, compère responsibilities, awareness of the 4th wall adjusting your act to environmental considerations, housekeeping, mic technique, styles of introduction, being a master of ceremonies, timekeeping, when to use material / interaction, the fundamentals of crowdwork, how to frame your performance, and some tips and don’ts that will elevate all levels of performance. The course will take a procedural approach and each attendee will be offered to ‘host a show’ so that feedback both common to all performers and specific to the individual will be worked through in a group setting. Monthly 5am Writing Club | Kemptown Bookshop

Brighton

Literary Arts
Where better to write than a bookshop with a cafe? When better than at 5am? Join other local writers from 5am on the first Wednesday of every month to write as the sun comes up. Coffee, tea and pastries available to kickstart your writing morning. We'll open the shop at 5am and you're welcome to join us then, or at anytime after that - and leave whenever you need to. The shop opens to the general public at 9.30am but if you're in full flow, you're free to stay as long as you like. Tickets are limited to 20 as we only have so many chairs and table space. While the majority of writers sit upstairs in the cafe, we also have chairs and tables on the ground floor and in the cosy basement, so feel free to spread yourself about throughout the bookshop - wherever you feel comfortable. We've had to increase our prices in 2025 because of the increase in Eventbrite fees, the minimum wage and Employers National Insurance. Tickets now cost £10 (including VAT) BUT in addition to including your first coffee or pot of tea, you will also get a 30% discount on any other drinks or snacks. The local bakery usually delivers our pastries at about 7.30am to give you that extra energy boost. This is a silent write session - there's no workshopping, just the motivation of being around other writers as the sun comes up. We can promise you a magical atmosphere. Why do we do this? Author and bookshop owner Cathy Hayward has regularly risen at 5am to write and she wondered if other local writers did the same. We started the 5am Writing Club in the bookshop as a trial on the Summer Solstice 2023. They've proved popular so they're now a monthly fixture and we'll keep running them as long as people keep turning up. If you have any questions, or feedback, email cathy@kemptownbookshop.co.uk Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable just because of the admin involved and Eventbrite's high fees - sorry. Paint your own Large Abstract Painting workshop in Brighton | Lawrence Art Studio

Mar 23, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Brighton
Arts
Painting
This isn’t a typical painting adult art class in Brighton. This isn’t a “paint by numbers” class or “copy how I paint” approach. In this workshop we will do things differently: The main tool we will be using is not the brush. It’s our mind - free from limitations. We will paint intuitively! Spontaneously to the music, allowing the paint to evolve and reveal itself freely into an explosion of colours, patterns, marks, shapes, texture on the canvas. We will paint big! Big brush movements, a bold colour pallet and even the fingers. The intention is to let go of any expectations. We will get messy! This is not about making pretty things. It’s rare opportunity to let go of perfectionism and experiment with a wide range of art materials (acrylic, watercolours, pastels, chalk etc) to free our inner artist and find our creative voice in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We will get creative! Art has no limitations, we use every day tools: window squeegee, credit card, bubble wrap, fork, scraper, feather, chopstick, ANYTHING to get our imagination going! Suddenly the concept of “painting” expands! It’s a painting wonderland full of possibilities. We will free ourselves from limiting beliefs! This dynamic and creative free-flow painting style will move us through past fears, creative blocks and self-doubt into joy and freedom! We will express ourselves! By opening our mind and listening to our heart, we can express our soul without boundaries or judgments. While experimenting with painting, we will build a relationship with who we are, reconnect to our inner child and fully express ourselves including the wisdom that is forever inside us. There is such freedom and joy in this! Who is this class for? This is a safe space for anyone! Even those who think they aren’t creative or can’t paint or draw. Also, this is a great opportunity for creative types who haven’t picked up a paintbrush in a while but are longing to express themselves through art. We can play and feel like a kid again without worrying about the end result. Nobody will judge what we create together. We are all on a journey to find our inner artist. The people who come to this class are from all walks of life: freelancers, entrepreneurs, website designers, yoga teachers, success coaches, parents….whatever! This could be fun and creative way to celebrate your birthday, anniversary or any other occasion (corporate team building) in Brighton, perfect Xmas gift too. What to expect on the day? Through fun, guided group and individual exercises we’ll explore wide range of art materials, experiment with an unconventional tools and try many abstract painting techniques including layering, mark making, texture. After a delicious lunch together, you will have time to develop your own intuitive painting on large canvas which you will take home with you at the end of the workshop. Date: Sunday 19th January Time: 10am till 4pm Venue: Lawrence Art Studio, 16 Kingsthorpe Rd, Brighton and Hove, Hove BN3 5HR Price: £250 (including all art materials + large canvas + lunch ) What’s included: 1 x Large Canvas (80x100cm or bigger, deep edge)Art Materials: acrylic paint, watercolours, spray paints, pastels, gesso and more… (you’re welcome to bring your own materials too)A selection of Brushes, texture & marking tools, apron and everything else you’ll need to create your one-of-the kind abstractLive group demonstration of abstract painting techniques and plenty of 1:1 guidanceProfessional Lawrence Art Studio Brighton and Hove Susex UKDelicious vegetarian lunchRefreshment: tea, coffee, biscuits & fruitsAll day event, places are limited to 10 participantsCan’t make this date? AGE LIMIT: 18+ We laugh and cry and gasp! You will leave as one of the Queerdo family... fully entertained and fully gagged. QUEERDOS is a night to come and be Queer as F*ck! Four years ago in an East London basement, cabaret superstar Rhys’ Pieces gave birth to his show (originally called Queefy) It began as a variety cabaret in the basement of a “straight” pub and was a space for queers to occupy, perform, laugh and evoke - which was both radical and surprising... From the very beginning, QUEERDOS celebrates all that is queer... as a place that is safe and a vibe that is welcoming for all! The show is never the same, but always superb! By purchasing a ticket you are agreeing to the venues Terms & Conditions SEATING/ACCESSIBILITY For this performance, there are some limited tables for two at the front of the stage. All General Admission seating is unreserved If you require a designated wheelchair space, please let us know in advance. If you are eligible for a free PA/carer ticket, you can apply here Information Source: Ironworks Studios Brighton | eventbrite
