First come first serve 🐥 If you've ever been inspired by Eric Ravilious' paintings, or by the moody misty hills & cliffs of the Sussex Downs, this is a workshop for you. Hosted at the modern and airy space at Sealanes, spend a day with likeminded people, learning the basics of watercolour & landscape painting inspired by Ravilious's style. `Painting above by Eric Ravilious 1903 - 1942. Ravilious is a famous artist who is known for his paintings & prints of the Sussex countryside. What we'll be doing: We’ll be going over basic watercolour skillssuch as paint consistency, brush strokes, colour mixing, layering and more. We'll learn specific skills that Ravilious uses in his paintings to create depth & mood. We will be working from books & reference images, as well as learning how to create our own compositions. This workshop is 5 hours with a 30 min break. But you are welcome to take other breaks in between when you feel like it! We're right next to the beach, so hopefulyl it'll be sunny and we can go and sit and look at the sea 🌊 Low pressure: This class is a mixture of learning something new and more in depth as well as just having a lovely day. Multiple times week I run beginner watercolour classes where each session we have a different theme, generally to do with nature. My background is in illustration which I studied in Bristol from 2016 - 2019. I have previously worked in a bit of editorial illustration under the name 'Zara Wilkins'. The thing I love most about watercolours is that it is so versatile. There are so many different ways it can be used, so many effects that you can create with different levels of water, pigment, paper weights and brushes. We'lll be drawing from an unclothed model who will be holding a range of poses between 2 - 30 mins. There'll also be a short break halfway for hot drinks and biscuits. Stephen Grant brings his highly acclaimed one day comedy masterclass workshops to the home of comedy in Brighton; The Forge Comedy Club.For over 10 years Stephen has hosted classes across the UK and abroad (Australia, Singapore, Dubai and Ireland) on specialist areas of performing, with a unique workshop approach that allows it to be specialised to every comedian’s style, even in a group environment. These rare and always sold-out classes are designed for existing comedians of all levels to finesse skills beyond those taught at standard multi-date comedy courses.While compèring is easily acknowledged as another branch of the standup skillset, there are specific requirements of this that must be focused on, on top of those used in a standard standup performance. This one day, intensive course aims to cover all of those in a way that elevates compères of all levels. This workshop is aimed at existing standup comedians who want to hit the ground running with their compèring, and existing compères who may find some areas of their skillset requires fine tuning or improvement. Where better to write than a bookshop with a cafe? When better than at 5am? Join other local writers from 5am on the first Wednesday of every month to write as the sun comes up. Coffee, tea and pastries available to kickstart your writing morning. We'll open the shop at 5am and you're welcome to join us then, or at anytime after that - and leave whenever you need to. The shop opens to the general public at 9.30am but if you're in full flow, you're free to stay as long as you like. Tickets are limited to 20 as we only have so many chairs and table space. While the majority of writers sit upstairs in the cafe, we also have chairs and tables on the ground floor and in the cosy basement, so feel free to spread yourself about throughout the bookshop - wherever you feel comfortable. We've had to increase our prices in 2025 because of the increase in Eventbrite fees, the minimum wage and Employers National Insurance. Tickets now cost £10 (including VAT) BUT in addition to including your first coffee or pot of tea, you will also get a 30% discount on any other drinks or snacks. The local bakery usually delivers our pastries at about 7.30am to give you that extra energy boost. This is a silent write session - there's no workshopping, just the motivation of being around other writers as the sun comes up. We can promise you a magical atmosphere. Why do we do this? Author and bookshop owner Cathy Hayward has regularly risen at 5am to write and she wondered if other local writers did the same. We started the 5am Writing Club in the bookshop as a trial on the Summer Solstice 2023. They've proved popular so they're now a monthly fixture and we'll keep running them as long as people keep turning up. During this course you will be introduced to the basics of oil painting, gaining confidence working with oil paints as you learn through making. The tutor will guide you through three different ways to start a figurative painting, showing you how each process affects the painting's outcome and encouraging you to understand which way fits best with your painting style and personal goals. Brighton & Hove Mountain Bike Network is a free, welcoming and supportive group for riders aged 12-17 to ride together, practice skills together, and connect with each other. We'll ride at the pace of the slowest rider and never leave anyone behind, giving tips along the way to help improve your confidence and skills on the bike. This isn’t a typical painting adult art class in Brighton. This isn’t a “paint by numbers” class or “copy how I paint” approach. In this workshop we will do things differently: The main tool we will be using is not the brush. It’s our mind - free from limitations. We will paint intuitively! Spontaneously to the music, allowing the paint to evolve and reveal itself freely into an explosion of colours, patterns, marks, shapes, texture on the canvas. We will paint big! Big brush movements, a bold colour pallet and even the fingers. The intention is to let go of any expectations. We will get messy! This is not about making pretty things. It’s rare opportunity to let go of perfectionism and experiment with a wide range of art materials (acrylic, watercolours, pastels, chalk etc) to free our inner artist and find our creative voice in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We will get creative! Art has no limitations, we use every day tools: window squeegee, credit card, bubble wrap, fork, scraper, feather, chopstick, ANYTHING to get our imagination going! Suddenly the concept of “painting” expands! It’s a painting wonderland full of possibilities. We will free ourselves from limiting beliefs! This dynamic and creative free-flow painting style will move us through past fears, creative blocks and self-doubt into joy and freedom! We will express ourselves! By opening our mind and listening to our heart, we can express our soul without boundaries or judgments. While experimenting with painting, we will build a relationship with who we are, reconnect to our inner child and fully express ourselves including the wisdom that is forever inside us. The Brighton Library hosts a monthly two-hour session for people to bring along their current project and participate in an afternoon of crafting and socialising. So, whether you enjoy knitting, scrapbooking, cross stitching, origami, colouring in, etc. everyone is welcome to come along and show off their skills and maybe help others with tips and tricks.
