Southern Appalachian Entomology with Shane Myers Friday, May 23 | 12 - 4 pm BRN - Core | BREG - Elective Entomology is the study of insects and in the Southern Appalachian region, we have a large diversity of these amazing creatures! In this course, we will discuss the history and life cycles of local insects and how to find and Identify insects you find in nature. We will also look for insects and note their role in nature, how they affect our lives, and ways to help ensure they continue to live around us. This program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle, yet uneven terrain, and dress appropriately for the weather. Shane Myers' interest in nature began as a child with a love of dinosaurs. This quickly grew to include fossils, insects, and reptiles, and learning from the notes his grandparents kept of the birds that came to their feeders in Toledo, Ohio. He has a Bachelors of Science in Wildlife Biology and did most of his undergraduate work on dragonflies and damselflies. This work included coordinating an Ohio- wide survey of dragonflies that culminated in a publication in 2024. He's assisted in outreach and education for plant conservation groups, Odonata Groups, and various bird groups. Which trees survive hurricane-force winds, and which are felled? What are the long-term effects of Hurricane Helene on ecosystems in the Southern Appalachian Mountains? These and other topics will be discussed during an illustrated lecture followed by a walk through hurricane-devastated portions of the Arboretum grounds Dan Lazar served for many years as the director of education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center, followed by several years as executive director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum. Wildwoods Walk with Alexandra Holland Thursday, May 29 | 1 - 3 pm BRN - Elective | BREG - Elective As spring transitions to summer, we see changes in the plants around us. Naturalist and botanist Alexandra Holland leads this walk at the Arboretum, pointing out the array of late spring wildflowers in bloom and discussing seasonal differences in the landscape. Learn some basics of wildflower and tree ecology and identification while taking in the beauty of the season. This program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. Alexandra Holland graduated from Duke University and earned her Master's degree in botany from the University of Texas at Austin. She was in the first class of students to be certified as Blue Ridge Naturalists. Alexandra managed the UTEX Culture Collection of Algae at UT Austin and spent many hours working with education programs at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. The Natural History and Ecology of Fungi: From Parasitism to Symbiosis with Todd Elliott Saturday, May 31  |  5 - 6:30 pm BRN - Elective Come learn about the biology and natural history of fungi in the Southeast and beyond. This talk will highlight the interconnections between fungi, animals, and plants. Todd will also discuss some of the region's best edible species along with where and how to find and identify them. Todd Elliott’s studies in biodiversity and interrelationships in nature have taken him to remote corners of the world to explore tropical rainforests, deserts, temperate forests, beaches, and high mountains on six continents. He is particularly interested in edible and medicinal mushrooms and plants and their importance to humans. Todd is an author of the Timber Press field guide Mushrooms of the Southeast and has published academic literature on various aspects of ecology and taxonomy. Todd received his undergraduate degree in interpretive natural history from Warren Wilson College (USA) and his PhD in ecology from the University of New England (Australia). He enjoys sharing his research and knowledge of the natural world through presentations, workshops, and consultations for many different organizations in the US and abroad. We will go over best practices for using binoculars, recommendations for purchasing your own binoculars, and popular field guides to use. Streambank Stabilization Solutions with Sarah Connor Wednesday, June 4  | 10 am - 12 pm BRN - Elective Mountain Valleys RC&D is a conservation non-profit that has served 8 counties in Western NC for over 50 years. We connect farmers, landowners, and small business owners with conservation programs including Shade Your Stream, a grant funded initiative to stabilize eroding streambanks with native plants. In this program, you will learn where to purchase erosion control materials (biodegradable coir matting and stakes), the ideal slope for grading banks, how to apply coir matting, and the best varieties of seeds, live stakes, and native plants to use to establish root systems. We will discuss the benefits of vegetating the riparian zone (the area adjacent to fresh, running water) and the impact riparian zones have on flooding. Sarah Noah is the Program Coordinator for Mountain Valleys Resource Conservation & Development Council, a conservation non-profit that has served WNC for over 50 years! She manages water resource programs including Shade Your Stream, a grant funded initiative to stabilize eroding streambanks with native plants. She has overseen the stabilization of over 10,000 linear feet of stream and riverbanks since Helene and will provide an overview of effective measures to mitigate erosion using biodegradable coir matting and a variety of native seeds, live stakes, trees, and shrubs. Learn about these unique organisms including their life cycles, habits, how they find food, and what other creatures depend on them for survival. We will have nets and containers to use but bring your own water shoes or boots but be sure to clean them before the class to prevent the spread of disease.
