Watershed: Transforming the Landscape in Early Modern Dutch Art | Baltimore
Feb 9–Jul 27, 2025 (UTC-5)
Baltimore
A selection of approximately 40 paintings, prints, and drawings from the BMA’s collection explores the role of water and landscape in defining the early modern Dutch Republic.
The water’s edge was a site of rich and often fraught ideas, where environmental, economic, political, and social narratives came to the fore. It also served as a site of immense inspiration for Dutch artists such as Frans Hals, Rembrandt van Rijn, Jacob van Ruisdael, and Salomon Van Ruysdael, among many others. Landscapes depicting harbors, trade, travel, and leisure abounded, as did the production of maps, still lifes, and portraits. Together, these images offer insight into the identity of the young Dutch Republic.

S.L. Price: "The American Game" | Enoch Pratt Free Library
May 22, 2025 (UTC-5)
Baltimore
Nearly a millennium ago, Native Americans created lacrosse as a means of training warriors and settling disputes. Co-opted by whites in the late 1800s, played for a century largely at elite east coast colleges, over the past thirty years lacrosse has exploded around the world, becoming the fastest growing sport in the U.S. while exposing the fault lines of prejudice and privilege that continue to dog its image. At the same time, the spiritual nature and dazzling style of the Native game has been elevated to center stage as the brilliant Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) play as a nation unto themselves, maintaining their deep traditions and hoping for inclusion in the 2028 Olympics. Based on seven years of research and observation and crafted with consummate skill, The American Game takes readers inside a unique cultural landscape that nonetheless reflects the wider world. Skillfully weaving in compelling action on the field from World Championships to tense NCAA tournaments, Price also chronicles the controversies and anomalies that have in many ways defined lacrosse. Racism stubbornly persists—and the Haudenosaunee have endured plenty in their rise—yet few mainstream entities have done more than lacrosse to champion the Native American experience. The Duke rape case and the murder of Yeardley Love still resonate, reinforcing the sport’s elite “laxbro” image, yet women remain the core force powering its astonishing boom. Lacrosse’s longtime link with Wall Street remains, but its bond with elite military service is just as remarkable. Price introduces legendary individuals from Jim Brown (some say he was even better at lacrosse than football), Black superstar Kyle Harrison and the brilliant Iroquois stickman Lyle Thompson, to famed coaches Lars Tiffany and Kelly Amonte Hiller and Onondaga faithkeeper Oren Lyons. All of them, and all who play the game, pay homage to the mystical qualities of the lacrosse stick, which American coaching icon Bill Tierney calls “the thing that makes you special.” A masterpiece of narration and investigation, The American Game is the powerful story of a sport that, perhaps more than any other, captures the complexity of America in its ongoing effort to achieve a more perfect union. S.L. Price will be joined in conversation by former president and CEO of USA Lacrosse Steve Stenersen. About the Author: S.L. Price, a senior writer at Sports Illustrated for twenty-six years, is the author of four previous books, including Playing through the Whistle, Finalist for the 2017 PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sports Writing, and Pitching around Fidel, a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Price has also written for Vanity Fair, New York Times, Time, and Oxford American. He lives in Washington, DC with his family. About the Moderator: Steve Stenersen is the Executive Director of Advancement at The St. Paul’s Schools, where he drives fundraising and engagement efforts to support more than 1,400 students and the schools’ $44 million budget. Before transitioning to education, Steve played a transformative role in the national and international growth of lacrosse for 37 years. For more than two decades, he served as President & CEO of USA Lacrosse and led the unification of eight national organizations to establish the sport’s governing body in 1998. Under his leadership, USA Lacrosse expanded membership from 17,500 to 440,000, grew annual revenue from $1.2 million to over $22 million, and invested more than $400 million to fuel the sport’s development. He also spearheaded construction of USA Lacrosse’s $20 million national headquarters, reinforcing the organization’s long-term stability. Steve has held leadership roles on multiple boards, including World Lacrosse, the Association of Chief Executives for Sport, the Baltimore Station, and the Tewaaraton Foundation. His contributions have earned him induction into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame and the World Lacrosse Lifetime Achievement Award. About the Program: Doors will open to registered attendees at 6 pm.A local bookseller will be on-site and have books available for purchase.Free parking vouchers are available to program attendees who park at the Franklin Street Garage (15 W. COLAB: Art and Music from Baltimore and Beyond - Gallery Talk | Eubie Blake National Jazz Institute and Cultural Center
May 18–May 20, 2025 (UTC-5)
Baltimore
Welcome to the COLAB: Art and Music from Baltimore and Beyond! EXHIBITION CONCEPT: This exhibition will showcase works on loan from important collections of African-American art and artists. The Visual Art Curator has selected pieces that span a wide range of styles, subjects and mediums, creating this digital catalog to facilitate collaboration in the curatorial process with invited musicians and producers of music in various musical genres. Under the leadership of the Eubie Blake Cultural Center, and in collaboration with the Visual Art Curator and the Music Curator, music professionals and students of the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University will review the COLAB digital exhibition catalog. They will respond to the works of art by selecting tracks from any musical genre that resonates with specific pieces; not necessarily choosing music from their own genre. Musical collaborators will also provide brief written commentaries on their music and art pairings, which will be integrated into the exhibition’s content by the curators. QR codes will link the selected works of art to an online playlist developed from the collaborators, offering a unique and diverse soundtrack for the exhibition. Additionally, narrated descriptions of the works, written by the Visual Art Curator, will be available for the visually impaired. Profiles on all the collaborators will also be a part of the exhibition content. Guests are encouraged to bring their own Bluetooth listening devices or borrow our POLK AUDIO headphones to fully experience exhibition’s soundtrack and the works of art. The intention of the exhibition is to foster a collaborative, interdisciplinary, art exhibition that engages the audience in the process of interpreting visual art through music.

Baltimore Holy S#!T! An Unforgettable Comedy Tour on a Boat | Baltimore Water Taxi
Jun 5, 2025 (UTC-5)
Baltimore
Welcome to Baltimore Holy S#!T - the greatest comedy tour in the greatest city in America. Join us for a hilarious voyage around the inner harbor where we'll explore Baltimore's history, landmarks, most ridiculous people, and get to know each other through the lens of two very weird, very funny Highwire Improv hosts. You'll get real history, realer laughs, and the realest look at Baltimore - not some grubby pamphlet with the same old ten facts covered in Old Bay. What to Bring: Yourself, in a positive, community loving moodFriends, family and/or foesSome water / soft drinksA reasonable amount of alcoholic drinks (this tour is BYOB) - we're only on the water for an hour, so emphasis on the word reasonable. Your hosts are the only ones who should be screaming, cursing, and otherwise acting foolish (they are professionals).Ground (and Water) Rules: Be safe: you'll get a briefing upon boarding the boat; follow all safety rules and regulations and any instructions from your Baltimore Water Taxi crew.Be respectful: we're all responsible for making sure everyone has a good experience; no heckling, bothering other guests, or otherwise rude or disrespectful behavior. There's no brig on this ship but we'll figure something out!Be on time: the boat will not wait for you! Plan to arrive no later than 7pm so we can go over things with everyone and get on the ship promptly. This is Fells Point and parking can be busy - plan ahead; we'll be there early in case you are too!No smoking of any kind is allowed on the pier or on the boat!About your Hosts: Katie Overbey (she/her)began her improv journey in 2018 under the guise of professional development as part of a class in grad school. She fell in love with the way improv could turn a group of science nerds into funny, cohesive performers and she's been hooked ever since. Katie has performed with various groups, including Babeprov in Baltimore and Game Knights at The Armory in NYC. She considers Highwire Improv her home base and when she's not doing improv, she's working as a food ingredient regulator, knitting, or snuggling her pets. Misty Letts (she/they) stepped into the improv pool 6 years ago and has not looked back. She got her footing at Baltimore Improv Group through curriculum and workshops from various BIG instructors of the form. Digging into opportunities to learn from so much talent including Don Fanelli (UCB), Kate Zelensky (UCB), and Travis Charles Ploeger (iMusical- WIT). She has also enjoyed playing with Maryland Improv Collective and can presently be found camped out on Highwire’s front stoop. Misty she’s and is also a they/them and can be found on two wheels tooling about town, so drive carefully! “Improv helps the world laugh, and listen” -Misty Barry Wright (he/him) is your dockside host and operations manager. Barry is an improviser, teacher, and technology professional. He is a co-founder of Highwire Improv and currently serves as President of the Board. He has trained in improv since 2017, including at Baltimore Improv Group, Hoopla Impro, and numerous online workshops. He performs with groups including Improv Jeoparty, Topiary, Important Screws, Whatever This Is, and Dreamweaver. Barry lives with his wife Kristen and their three cats and is always happy to chat about improv or start a Google Doc. About Highwire Improv: Highwire Improv is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organization based in Baltimore, Maryland.
