Monthly 5am Writing Club | Kemptown Bookshop
Apr 2, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Brighton
Where better to write than a bookshop with a cafe? When better than at 5am? Join other local writers from 5am on the first Wednesday of every month to write as the sun comes up. Coffee, tea and pastries available to kickstart your writing morning. We'll open the shop at 5am and you're welcome to join us then, or at anytime after that - and leave whenever you need to. The shop opens to the general public at 9.30am but if you're in full flow, you're free to stay as long as you like. Tickets are limited to 20 as we only have so many chairs and table space. While the majority of writers sit upstairs in the cafe, we also have chairs and tables on the ground floor and in the cosy basement, so feel free to spread yourself about throughout the bookshop - wherever you feel comfortable. We've had to increase our prices in 2025 because of the increase in Eventbrite fees, the minimum wage and Employers National Insurance. Tickets now cost £10 (including VAT) BUT in addition to including your first coffee or pot of tea, you will also get a 30% discount on any other drinks or snacks. The local bakery usually delivers our pastries at about 7.30am to give you that extra energy boost. This is a silent write session - there's no workshopping, just the motivation of being around other writers as the sun comes up. We can promise you a magical atmosphere. Why do we do this? Author and bookshop owner Cathy Hayward has regularly risen at 5am to write and she wondered if other local writers did the same. We started the 5am Writing Club in the bookshop as a trial on the Summer Solstice 2023. They've proved popular so they're now a monthly fixture and we'll keep running them as long as people keep turning up. If you have any questions, or feedback, email cathy@kemptownbookshop.co.uk Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable just because of the admin involved and Eventbrite's high fees - sorry.

Creative Writing Masterclass: Managing Pace | Jubilee Library
Apr 4, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Brighton
Pace is a fundamental element of writing. When you read something well-paced, you just somehow know, because you’re pulled into the story and time passes quickly. On the other hand, you can feel the drag of it when something isn’t well-paced. But pace is rather elusive. What actually is it, and how can you improve it in your own story? Pace operates at every level of a piece of writing, from individual sentences to the whole book. As writers we need to be aware of when something we’ve written needs slowing down and lingering over, and when it needs speeding up. We often use pace instinctively, which is great when it works; when it doesn’t, we need to figure out why, and what to do about it. This practical workshop will break pace down and explore techniques for using it more effectively in our writing: from sentence to paragraph to scene, and beyond. The workshop tutor is Beth Miller. Beth is the author of six novels, including the bestselling The Missing Letters of Mrs Bright (2020). Her most recent novel, The Woman Who Came Back to Life (2022), will be published in seven languages. She has also published two non-fiction books about Shakespeare and the Archers. She is a tutor on the Creative Writing MA and MFA at West Dean College, and a regular tutor for Arvon. She works as a writing mentor and book coach for writers at all stages. She has a PhD in Psychology. The session will be held at the Jubilee Library in Brighton and will run from 10-4pm with an hour for lunch. The venue is wheelchair accessible, near the train station and bus routes and with plenty of options for lunch. The workshop is part of a series of one-day masterclasses held this Easter. They are open to existing students on the Creative Writing Programme and other writers looking to improve specific areas of their writing craft. You can book onto as many workshops as you choose. The Easter masterclasses run from 10-4pm each day: • Friday 4th April – Managing Pace: Beth Miller (in-person in the Jubilee Library,Brighton) £75 including VAT. • Saturday 5th April – Boosting your creativity: Roy McFarlane (in-person in the Jubilee Library, Brighton) £75 including VAT • Sunday 6th April – Creating memorable characters: Laura Wilkinson (in-person in the Jubilee Library, Brighton) £75 including VAT • Saturday 12th April: Placemaking – creating great places: Rosie Chard (online) £65 including VAT • Sunday13th April: Imagery, Symbolism and Metaphor in Prose – John McCullough (online) £65 including VAT First year students on the Creative Writing Programme receive two free masterclasses a year. Creative Writing masterclass: Boosting your creativity | Jubilee Library
Apr 5, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Brighton
We often freeze at the vast space or the volume of the blank notebook or computer screen and doubt ourselves. In this workshop, we will look at ways to boost our creativity. We'll start by listening to how other writers and poets encounter the white page and look at ways to get the pen to release your stories, and get the keyboard tapping away. Then we'll discuss the Power Hour – getting the writing muscle working so that it becomes a habit, before moving on to explore how and what to write. The workshop will be led by Roy McFarlane. Royis a Poet, Writer and former Youth & Community Worker born in Birmingham of Jamaican parentage, spending most of his years living in Wolverhampton and the Black Country and now living in Brighton. He is currently the National Canal Laureate. He’s the former Birmingham Poet Laureate and Starbucks Poet in Residence and co-editor of Celebrate Wha? Creative Writing masterclass: Creating Memorable Characters | Jubilee Library
Apr 6, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Brighton
When we think of great works of fiction – and our favourite books – it tends to be the characters that linger long after the intricacies of plot have faded: Nazneen Ahmed, Scrooge, Elizabeth Bennet, Eleanor Oliphant, Marx Watanabe, Baby Kochamma and so on. What is it that makes these characters so unforgettable? They’re not all good, or likeable. How do we build characters readers care about? In this workshop we will be looking at some of the different ways to find our characters, how to make them credible and complex, and the tools we have to show them to our readers. The workshop will be led by Laura Wilkinson. Laura has published seven novels for adults (two under a pseudonym) and numerous short stories. These novels are That Night in New York, which came out in September 2024 published by Serendipity, the new romance imprint at Legend Times, Crossing the Line, The Family Line, Redemption Song and Skin Deep. Crossing the Line was a Welsh Books Council book of the month and Skin Deep was longlisted for Not the Booker prize. Alongside writing, she runs workshops on craft and has spoken at literary events nationwide. For more than twelve years, she’s worked as a creative writing tutor for organisations including New Writing South and on the MA programme at West Dean. She is also a structural editor and mentor, coaching writers to competition short listings and publication. The session will be held at the Jubilee Library in Brighton and will run from 11-5pm with an hour for lunch. The venue is wheelchair accessible, near the train station and bus routes and with plenty of options for lunch – including bringing your own. The workshop is part of a series of one-day masterclasses held this Easter. Eduardo Martín & Ahmed Dickinson | The Folklore Rooms
Apr 6, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Brighton
The Bridge is Cuba’s most internationally acclaimed guitar duo. With their musical empathy, Eduardo Martín and Ahmed Dickinson transform their concerts into a vehicle that connects, incorporates and juxtaposes their different generations; and the spiritual journey that drives their thrilling yet soothing performances.
Like many other Cubans or Caribbean, they enjoy a natural sense of rhythm. The guitar is their favoured instrument, which idiomatically conveys all the melodic and rhythmic intricacies of South- America's cultural diversity.
The Bridge is a compilation of the most alluring works for two guitars by Grammy nominee composer Eduardo Martín. Here, classical styles and rock merge with son montunos; old Yoruba chants, feel-good rumbas, funk- boleros, new age tunes and cinematic pieces sit alongside Cuban tumbaos with slap bass.

Poet's Palace is a platform that empowers spoken word artists to amplify their voices, connect with diverse audiences and inspire through the transformative power of poetry. We champion emerging talent by giving them the stages and resources to achieve. We grow inclusive artistic communities in spaces across the UK where artists can connect, engage and celebrate the art form. We are aiming to elevate spoken word to new platforms, expand into interdisciplinary collaborations, perform at festivals and help artists gain visibility and recognition for their work. Poets Palace recognises the value of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Intersectionality, and how paramount integrating these principles into our processes. From learning opportunities through the growth of Poets Palace, we wanted to ensure equity in financial access to our events. A lot of our Poets Palace talent are from communities of the Global Majority, LGBTQ2IA+ community and diverse backgrounds who are disproportionately impacted by systems of oppressions, which may impact finances to access events like ours. Through consulting the Anti-Racism activist and Brighton host, Kaia Allen-Bevan, we have made adjustments to our ticket prices to ensure we are sticking to our principles and values - this is not a tick-box exercise.
