The Dinner Detective True Crime Mystery Dinner Show - Tulsa, OK | Hilton Garden Inn Tulsa-Broken Arrow
Apr 12, 2025 (UTC-6)ENDED
Tulsa
The Dinner Detective is America's largest interactive true crime mystery comedy dinner show! Solve a hilarious and engaging mystery while you feast on a fantastic dinner. Just beware! The killer is hiding somewhere in the room, and you may find yourself as a Prime Suspect! Our show is very different from traditional true crime mystery dinner shows. We will hide non-costumed actors in the audience that are pretending to be part of the crowd. This results in a much more social and interactive evening than with other shows. Our shows are set during the present day and take place in real time. Over the course of the night, our costumed Detectives will uncover clues, interrogate audience members that may or may not be part of the show, and help everyone get closer to solving the mystery.

The "Hard Work" of Crafting Labor Poetry with Joshua Gottlieb-Miller | Tulsa City County Library
Apr 26, 2025 (UTC-6)ENDED
Tulsa
Join poet and educator Joshua Gottlieb-Miller as he discusses the crafting of a poetics that examines work and labor conditions in the modern world. Joshua is the author of two collections of poetry--Dybbuk America and The Art of Bagging. Most of the poems in The Art of Bagging were written while Joshua worked in a grocery store, often in fragments on the folded-up piece of paper he kept tucked in his pocket. He worked at Trader Joe's after getting his undergrad degree, left the store to pursue an MFA, and then returned after completing his advanced degree. Feeling stuck, watching time tick away stocking shelves, Joshua found himself dreading the store but writing more and more. We equate our worth and identities to our jobs and may even reduce others to theirs. Because so many of his co-workers said or did things that inspired poems, Joshua interviewed as many as he could. The book's arc traces the speaker's recognition of these workers' shared positions—thoughtful individuals enmeshed in a singular, larger system—within an economic and, by the end of the book, metaphysical space. Joshua will speak to writing across a variety of labor environments. Though a poet, this craft talk will cover processes available to fiction and nonfiction writers as well. We will also discuss generative writing prompts, Woody Guthrie, and solidarity, and end with the reading of a few new poems. Joshua Gottlieb-Millerreceived his PhD and MFA in Poetry from the University of Houston, where he also served as a Poetry Editor and Digital Nonfiction Editor for Gulf Coast. Joshua has published poetry, essays, scholarship, hybrid, and multimedia writing. His writing has been awarded fellowships from the MacDowell Colony, the Tent Writing Conference at the Yiddish Book Center, and elsewhere, and from 2018-2019 he served as an inaugural Post-Harvey Think Tank Fellow at Rice University's Humanities Research Center, representing folklore. His writing has won the Indiana Review Poetry Prize, the Inprint Barthelme Prize in Poetry, and the Inprint Robert J. Sussman Prize. His debut collection, The Art of Bagging, won Conduit’s Marystina Santiestevan First Book Prize. His second book, Dybbuk Americana, is available now from Wesleyan University Press. Joshua teaches at San Jacinto College, and lives in Houston with his wife and son. https://www.joshuagottliebmiller.com/ One-on-one poetry consultations with Joshua are available during Tulsa LitFest. Writing an Identity Not Your Own with Alex Temblador | Tulsa City County Library
Apr 26, 2025 (UTC-6)ENDED
Tulsa
Do you have the tools to authentically write and edit a character whose identity is different than your own? It’s not a subject that’s generally taught in creative writing programs. There are few online resources, but in terms of craft books, what exists is outdated or limited in its scope. Some seminars and classes are offered by independent writing workshops, but can you learn everything you need to know in a three-hour seminar or even a four-week class? Not at all. You need a book on hand to provide guidance and insight as you craft characters with historically marginalized identities. That’s where this book comes in. Temblador will discuss Writing an Identity Not Your Own in a sit-down, interview-style discussion with Nimrod managing editor Hachi Chuku. Attendees will have a chance to ask questions as well as purchase copies of the text and get them signed by the author. Alex Tembladorreceived her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Central Oklahoma in 2014 and became an author in 2018 with the publication of Secrets of the Casa Rosada by Arte Publico Press. Half Outlaw was published by Blackstone Publishing in 2022, while Writing an Identity Not Your Own was published by St. Martin’s Essentials in 2024. Her creative writing has appeared in anthologies like Living Beyond Borders: Growing Up Mexican in America and Speculative Fiction for Dreamers: A Latinx Anthology, as well as literary journals like Colorado Review, PALABRITAS, D Magazine, Cigale Literary Magazine, and Scissortale Review. https://www.alextemblador.com/ HachiChukuis the Managing Editor for Nimrod International Journal. Their writing explores family, nature, and mental health within the realms of fiction and poetry. They have work forthcoming in The Shallot and Knee Brace Press. https://nimrod.utulsa.edu/ Alex is offering one-on-one prose consultations during Tulsa LitFest. Tulsa boasts a wide variety of residential architecture from the late 1800s through today. From midcentury modern, craftsman bungalows and colonial revival to contemporary mansions, there is an abundance of interesting homes throughout the city. The goal of TFA’s newest residential-focused program, Distinctive Dwellings, is to give those who love architecture an opportunity to see behind the doors of Tulsa’s most distinctive residences through self-guided exploration. Each guest will received a brochure with historic information about the property and have the opportunity to explore the home at their own pace.
This Distinctive Dwellings open house features
THE HISTORIC WHITE HOUSE MANSION!
Tucked away near Tulsa Hills, the 10,000 square foot White House Mansion is a hidden gem with a fascinating past. Originally built in 1911 on Cherry Street, the home was saved from demolition in 1980 when accountant Bill Satterfield relocated it—piece by piece—to its current site. Today, the mansion serves as an event venue, blending historic charm with modern elegance. Inside, visitors will find unique architectural elements repurposed from Tulsa landmarks, including flooring from a former Utica Square bowling alley and support beams from the old Riverside Drive-In. Chandeliers once graced Petty’s Fine Foods, while a disco ball from Cain’s Ballroom adds a touch of nostalgia. The mansion is filled with antiques, from a pre-statehood Tulsa city clerk’s desk to vintage radios and television sets, making a visit feel like a journey through Tulsa’s history. Despite its close proximity to the city, the mansion’s serene setting offers a peaceful retreat, making it a truly unique destination.
SPECIAL GUEST:
Scott Petty, of Petty's Fine Foods, will be present to give a brief history of Utica Square and Petty's Fine Foods in the room where flooring from the Utica Bowl was repurposed and under the chandeliers that once hung in his iconic Tulsa grocery story.
