Wolves: Photography by Ronan Donovan | Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County

Sep 17, 2024–Jun 22, 2025 (UTC-8)
Los Angeles
Exhibitions
Since 2014, Ronan Donovan, a National Geographic Explorer and photographer, has examined the relationship between wild wolves and humans in order to better understand the animals, our shared history, and what drives the persistent human-wolf conflict. This moving exhibition features Ronan Donovan’s striking images and videos of wild wolves in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and Ellesmere Island in the high Canadian Arctic. “Wolves: Photography by Ronan Donovan”, created by National Geographic Society and the National Museum of Wildlife Art, highlights the contrast between wolves that live in perceived competition with humans, in the Yellowstone area, and wolves that live without human intervention, in the Canadian Arctic. As wolves in North America are increasingly under threat due to recent extreme wolf-control laws, and humans continue to impinge on the land and food sources that these animals need to survive, Donovan’s compelling photographs inspire a better understanding of these often misunderstood animals. This exhibition is presented in partnership with the National Geographic Society and the National Museum of Wildlife Art, and supported through the patronship of Jacques Marie Mage.

Ryuichi Sakamoto | seeing sound, hearing time | Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo

Dec 21, 2024–Mar 30, 2025 (UTC+9)
Tokyo
Exhibitions
The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo will hold "Sakamoto Ryuichi: Seeing Sound, Listening to Time," the musician and artist Ryuichi Sakamoto's (1952-2023) largest-scale solo exhibition in Japan, which will comprehensively introduce his large-scale installation works. For over 50 years, Sakamoto has always been at the forefront of his time through his diverse artistic endeavors. Since the 1990s, he has been performing live performances using multimedia, and since the 2000s, through collaborations with various artists, he has actively considered and put into practice the attempt to install sound in a three-dimensional manner in exhibition spaces. Based on the exhibition concept that Sakamoto left for the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo during his lifetime, this exhibition will dynamically compose and deploy over ten immersive, experiential sound installations, including new unreleased works and his representative works, in the spaces inside and outside the museum, on the theme of sound and time, which have long been a preoccupation in Sakamoto's creative activities. Through these works, we will trace the trajectory of Sakamoto's pioneering and experimental creative activities, and widely introduce a new side of this extraordinary artist. Ryuichi Sakamoto's "seeing sound, listening to time" opens the viewer's eyes and ears, stirs the heart, and creates an experience different from conventional music appreciation or art appreciation. Sakamoto's artistic challenge of "installing sound in space" and his profound question of "what is time" transcend time and space, bringing us new perspectives and continuing to open new horizons for creativity and experience. Utopia, Dystopia: Tony Cokes and Oscar Muñoz | Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Dec 14, 2024–Jun 22, 2025 (UTC-5)
Boston
Exhibitions
“Utopia, Dystopia” presents two single-channel videos from the MFA collection by Tony Cokes (b. 1956) and Oscar Muñoz (b. 1951). Created in the last decade, the films grapple with the duality of utopia and dystopia, expressing the artists’ senses of how idealistic visions of society often collide with harsh realities. Utopian dreams can promise a future without oppression and celebrate freedom of expression, yet achieving these ideals frequently comes into conflict with underlying dystopian truths such as systems of control, state surveillance, and deep inequality.
