Khrystyna Mykhailichenko – An Evening of Extraordinary Piano Mastery Prepare to be captivated by the artistry of Ukrainian pianist Khrystyna Mykhailichenko, whose performances are celebrated for their breathtaking virtuosity, emotional depth, and storytelling power. This is your chance to witness an extraordinary young talent who has already won the hearts of audiences worldwide. Programme Claude Debussy: Four Preludes • Des pas sur la neige (Footsteps in the Snow) • Ce qu’a vu le vent d’Ouest (What the West Wind Saw) • La Cathédrale engloutie (The Sunken Cathedral) • Feux d’artifice (Fireworks) A painter of sound, Debussy takes us on a journey from the stillness of snow-covered landscapes to the dazzling spectacle of fireworks, each prelude infused with Khrystyna’s unique sensitivity and flair. Frédéric Chopin: Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, Op. 35 Best known for its iconic Funeral March, this sonata is a whirlwind of passion and intensity, brought to life by Khrystyna’s ability to navigate both the fiery drama and profound beauty of Chopin’s genius. Interval Franz Schubert: Piano Sonata in A Major, D. 959 One of Schubert’s final masterpieces, this sonata is an expansive journey through joy, longing, and transcendence. Khrystyna’s performance promises to uncover every nuance, from the radiant melodies to the deep introspection at its heart. Why You Can’t Miss This Concert Khrystyna’s music has been described as “poetry in motion” and “pure artistry.” She has an exceptional gift for connecting with audiences, turning every performance into an unforgettable experience. Whether you’re a lifelong classical music lover or discovering these masterpieces for the first time, this concert will leave you inspired, moved, and enriched. Secure your tickets now and be part of an evening that celebrates the magic of piano music performed by one of the most exciting young artists of our time. Full Biography Khrystyna Mykhailichenko Described by critics as a pianist of extraordinary virtuosity and poetic sensitivity, Ukrainian prodigy Khrystyna Mykhailichenko is redefining what it means to be a modern classical artist. Combining technical brilliance with emotional depth far beyond her years, she captivates audiences worldwide with performances that bring new life to the great piano repertoire. Born in Simferopol, Crimea, Khrystyna’s exceptional talent was evident from an early age. By the time she was eight, she had performed her first solo concerto with an orchestra—a milestone achieved amidst the tumult of her family’s forced relocation to Kyiv following the Russian occupation of Crimea. It was in Kyiv that she honed her artistry under the guidance of Nataliia Tolpygo-Rusina and later with acclaimed pianist Alexei Grynyuk, who described her as “a performer of the highest level.” Grynyuk’s mentorship deepened her interpretative maturity, allowing her to tackle the most challenging works with a rare sense of poetry and style. Despite early success in competitions, Khrystyna chose to focus on artistry over accolades, dedicating herself to building an exceptional solo repertoire. Her career has since flourished, with appearances at prestigious festivals including LvivMozArt in Ukraine, Musica Mundi in Belgium, and the Young Artists Festival in Germany. She has graced stages across the globe, from Salle Cortot in Paris to Washington, D.C.’s World Bank headquarters, performing over 40 times as a soloist with leading orchestras. Her performances are marked by a maturity and balance that allow the musical line to shine with purity and authority. Critics have compared her interpretations of Liszt’s Spanish Rhapsody to the legendary Emil Gilels, praising her for transforming Liszt’s virtuosic demands into music of profound poetry and insight. Since the outbreak of war in 2022, Khrystyna has continued her artistic journey in exile, first in Poland and now in the UK, where she studies at the Royal Academy of Music under the guidance of Joanna MacGregor. Her debut at the Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall in June 2025, where she will perform Gershwin’s Piano Concerto, promises to be a defining moment in her already remarkable career. After making her home in Corbridge for a year, after fleeing war-torn Ukraine, Khrystyna, has developed a special connection with the North East. Her remarkable performances in the region have left a lasting impression, and we are thrilled to welcome her back to share her extraordinary talent with us once again. Khrystyna’s artistry, resilience, and commitment to her craft make her one of the most exciting young pianists of her generation—a performer whose music transcends boundaries and speaks directly to the heart. Joanna Kidney was born in Dublin and is based in Co. Wicklow, Ireland. Her practice considers the immensity and the mystery of being human. It is a web of interrelated ideas around consciousness, perception, temporality and holism. Through drawing, painting and installation, her work offers open, poetic prompts and a contemplative space. Joanna's paintings are process-based rather than representational. They emerge through rhythmic mark-making with gradual shifts and inflections, like blocks of music. Line is prominent, and as Maeve Mulrennan notes, her way of painting is close to drawing. It is also close to dance in that it is so closely based on repeated movement and variation. The often unconscious repetition of line is, for the painter, as much about muscle memory as it is for the dancer. Aidan Dunne 'The Irish Times' In addition to exhibitions in New York, Germany, New Mexico, and Virginia, Joanna has had a number of solo exhibitions throughout Ireland. She is the recipient of a Cooper Foundation Grant; funding from the Arts Council of Ireland and Wicklow County Council; and an RHA Studio Award, among others. International residencies include time in Kiðjaberg, Iceland and Brigham Young University, Utah. She teaches in Ireland and Internationally at Colleges in the USA and The Netherlands. She is an annual presenter and tutor at the International Encaustic Conference and Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Co. Mayo. Her Encaustic Painting Workshops are supported by R&F Handmade Paints, USA. Joanna’s work is in many collections including Allied Irish Banks; The Ballinglen Museum of Art; The Central Bank of Ireland; Department of the Environment, Northern Ireland; Fleschmann Hilliard PR; Lee Hotels; and O’Connor Sutton Cronin Engineering, as well as private collections in Ireland, USA, UK, Spain, France, Switzerland.
