The Voorlinden Museum in the Netherlands is presenting A Confrontation at the Zoo, a solo exhibition by Belgian painter Michaël Borremans (b. 1963), until March 23. The exhibition brings together nearly fifty paintings by Borremans from the past two decades. The museum’s various rooms showcase his early works, depictions of people, animals and still lifes, including representative series such as Flame of the Sun (2017). Also on display is Monkey (2023), a porcelain monkey wearing human clothes. Part of the Voorlinden collection, this iconic work touches on an important theme that fascinated Borremans: how humans portray themselves; in it, Borremans gives a seemingly insignificant and disposable object the weight of history, the status and importance of portraiture, as if to say: this, too, is a portrayal of a human being.
