Rotary Shakespeare Marathon and Half Marathon | Stratford-upon-Avon
Sports & Fitness
Rotary Shakespeare Marathon - More than just a marathon! Whether you are a new marathoner or an experienced runner looking to set a personal best, the Shakespeare Marathon and Half Marathon offer runners not only a fantastic course, but also first-class running and excellent organization. It is a chance to experience the world-famous Stratford-upon-Avon and run between some of the most historic buildings in the country and through miles of beautiful Warwickshire countryside. The course is mainly flat and fast, starting in the center of the town, opposite Shakespeare's old school, and along the way you will see attractions such as the River Avon, Holy Trinity Church (home to William Shakespeare's grave) and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. You will run through quintessentially English villages, where chocolate box thatched roof cottages, humpback bridges and beautiful dry stone walls are a delight to the eye. The Shakespeare Marathon has been awarded the BARR Gold standard, reflecting the high standards achieved in all aspects of the event organization. As the event is partly funded by sponsors and is organized and run entirely by volunteers, the cost of administration and facilities is absolutely minimal. Over half of the money raised went to local charities including Shakespeare Hospice (founded by the Rotary Club), Stratford Samaritans, Lifespace Trust and ESH Works. There are also plenty of family friendly activities after the race (see our page on Stratford-upon-Avon), so we recommend a 'post-race retreat'. We look forward to seeing you, and we promise this will be more than just a marathon.
