FAST-FIRE KILN FIRING COURSE June 13,14,15 Our Fastfire Kilns Course offers the perfect introduction to wood-firing ceramics, giving you hands-on experience with wood management and the process of loading and firing wood kilns here at Oxford. We encourage you to bring bisque-fired stoneware pots to test your glaze recipes and see the unique effects wood-firing can create on your own work. Throughout the course, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to deepen your understanding of wood-firing techniques, gain insights from our experienced tutors, and share knowledge with fellow participants. These courses are also a great way to get to know our facilities and connect with the wider wood-firing community. Our site is home to a variety of wood-fired kilns, which we use for both firing courses and private hire by experienced firing teams. If you’re interested in building your own kiln, we also run specialized kiln-building courses. For accommodation, we offer free on-site camping with access to hot showers and a field kitchen. If camping isn’t your preference, you’ll find plenty of nearby Airbnbs to choose from. For those booking early, we also have limited accommodation available at our field study centre in the woods. Communal cooking and dining are a cherished part of the firing experience, and we’ll organize these closer to the course date to ensure everyone feels part of the community. We run these courses throughout the year. Our first 3 dates for 2025 are 17-19 April, 2-4 May and 13-15 June. Please ask if you have any further questions. Oxford Symphony Orchestra Summer Concert | The Sheldonian Theatre

Sheldonian Theatre, Saturday 14 June 2025, 7:30pmSchumann - Genoveva Overture Bartók - Violin Concerto no.2 Brahms - Symphony no.4 Stefan Simonca-Oprita violin Robert Max conductor In Schumann's only opera, Genoveva, drama ensues after a failed attempt to seduce Genoveva, the wife of Siegfrid. Mirroring the storyline, the overture follows the same dramatic trajectory, with music moving through ominous and wrenching moods, arriving at eventual majesty and triumph. Bartók's second violin concerto was written for Zoltán Székely, his long-standing recital partner. This concerto is infused with styles from Hungarian folk music, and is very much a celebration of life, and is played for us by Stefan Simonca-Oprita. Despite featuring great warmth and lyrical beauty, Brahm's 4th symphony has a definite tragic character. The finale is based on a passacaglia: a sequence variations on a bass pattern. It ends with a bleak but thrilling conclusion, cementing its place as a firm favourite in the classical repertoire. Information Source: Oxford Symphony Orchestra | eventbrite

“Bold and courageous” – Classical Voice America “Sandrin expresses the sounds with infinite subtlety” – Nieuwe Noten Netherlands A brave new world – BBC Music Magazine An incredibly talented pianist – Piano News Germany Join acclaimed pianist and Kettner Concerts co-artistic director Cristian Sandrin for an extraordinary evening showcasing Beethoven's complete Opus 2 Piano Sonatas—the young composer's bold declaration and his emerging unique voice within the musical world of Vienna. Written to challenge the mastery of Mozart and Haydn, these three ambitious sonatas marked Beethoven's explosive debut in the world of piano sonatas. Experience the revolutionary spirit of young Beethoven as his unique voice emerges through brilliant technical passages, dramatic emotional contrasts, and surprising innovations that would forever change classical music. Witness the complete cycle performed in the elegant surroundings of the National Liberal Club—a rare opportunity to trace the evolution of Beethoven's genius across three remarkable works that announced the arrival of one of history's greatest musical revolutionaries. Programme: L van Beethoven: Sonata No. 1 in F minor, Op. 2, No. 1 AllegroAdagioMenuetto: AllegrettoPrestissimoThe F minor sonata opens the cycle with a restless energy. Its first movement, inspired by Mozart's K. 457 sonata in the same key, features dramatic silences and sudden dynamic contrasts. The lyrical Adagio provides momentary respite before the traditional Menuetto and the fiery final Prestissimo, which pushes the technical boundaries of piano playing for its time. Sonata No. 2 in A major, Op. 2, No. 2 Allegro vivaceLargo appassionatoScherzo: AllegrettoRondo: GraziosoThe A major sonata expands in scale and ambition. Its brilliant opening movement demonstrates Beethoven's mastery of Classical forms while hinting at new directions. The profound Largo appassionato moves with the dignity of a slow march, while the Scherzo replaces the traditional Menuetto with greater rhythmic playfulness. The elegant Rondo finale showcases Beethoven's gift for graceful melody. Sonata No. 3 in C major, Op. 2, No. 3 Allegro con brioAdagioScherzo: AllegroAllegro assaiThe cycle culminates in the virtuosic C major sonata, the most technically demanding of the three. Its expansive first movement rivals a concerto in brilliance, while the serene Adagio explores rich harmonic territories. The playful Scherzo leads to an exhilarating finale that pushes the performer's technique to its limits, highlighting Beethoven's own legendary prowess as a pianist. Biography: Born into a family of musicians from Bucharest, Cristian Sandrin has been surrounded by classical music all his life. His frequent visits to the historic Romanian Atheneum concert hall and his attendances at the prestigious Enescu Festival shaped his musical aspirations from early childhood. Years later, he would have his own debut at the Atheneum at the age of 13. Cristian is especially devoted to the Classical and Romantic repertoire. His passion for Mozart’s piano concertos led him to direct from the keyboard several concertos during Summer Festivals at the Royal Academy of Music, as well as for the official opening of the Angela Burgess Recital Hall. From 2018–2020 he was privileged to tour the UK as an artist of the Countess of Munster Recital Scheme. Additionally, He is a scholarship holder of the Imogen Cooper Music Trust benefiting from her unique one-to-one guidance and mentorship since 2017. He graduated in 2019 from the Royal Academy of Music, receiving a DipRAM, MMus later being part of the prestigious Advanced Diploma programme. In 2023 he has been invited to become the co-Artistic Director of the much-admired Kettner Concerts which are held in the David Lloyd George Hall of the National Liberal Club, Rachmaninov’s favourite London recital room and the venue where he performed his European farewell concert. In 2021 Cristian travelled to Romania for his debut with the acclaimed George Enescu Philharmonic performing Mozart's K503 Piano Concerto in C major at the country's foremost music venue: The Romanian Atheneum.Since 2020, Cristian has performed challenging solo programmes including Beethoven's last three sonatas and Bach's Goldberg Variations in famous venues across Europe from Berlin’s Konzerthaus, the Radio Hall in Bucharest to London’s LSO St Luke’s and Holywell Music Room Oxford, Sinfonia Smith Square and Sala Puccini in Milan. In July 2025 Cristian will have his debut at Beethovenhaus in Bonn, Germany. His debut CD Correspondances (Antarctica Records 2022) featuring music by Ravel, Enescu and Cyril Scott has been highly acclaimed in Europe and accross the Atlantic: the German Magazine Piano News selected it as the CD of the Month whilst the American Record Guide named it “the highlight of this month’s listening. The Genius Myth The tortured poet. The rebellious scientist. The monstrous artist. The tech disruptor. You can tell what a society values by who it labels as a genius. You can also tell who it excludes, who it enables, and what it is prepared to tolerate. Taking us from the Renaissance Florence of Leonardo da Vinci to the Floridian rocket launches of Elon Musk's SpaceX, Helen Lewis unravels a word that we all use - without really questioning what it means. Along the way, she uncovers the secret of the Beatles' success, asks how biographers should solve the Austen Problem, and reveals why Stephen Hawking thought IQ tests were for losers (before taking one herself). And she asks if the modern idea of genius - a class of special people - is distorting our view of the world. Helen Lewis Helen Lewis is a British journalist who works as a Staff Writer at the Atlantic Magazine. She is a regular on the Private Eye podcast, Page 94, and is the co-host of Strong Message Here with Armando Iannucci on BBC Radio 4. Her history of Feminism, 'Difficult Women' was a Sunday Times bestseller. Information Source: Blackwell's, Broad Street Oxford | eventbrite

Literary Arts
We can't wait to welcome Cory Doctorow to Blackwell's to discuss his latest novel PICKS AND SHOVELS and his wider work as an author and activist. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: Enshittification was a choice. The decay of the once-great internet into five giant websites, each filled with screenshots of the other four, was a choice. Policy choices that sidelined privacy and labor protection and ignored monopolisaiton created the enshitternet. In PICKS AND SHOVELS, Cory Doctorow visits the moment those first choices were being made, in a historical technothriller that takes us back to the heroic era of the PC revolution and the moment where it all started to go wrong. Picks and Shovels stars Martin Hench, Doctorow's hard-charging, two-fisted high-tech forensic accountant. It's a standalone novel in a series that includes the bestselling novels Red Team Blues and The Bezzle, In this volume, we learn the origin story of Silicon Valley's first - and best - finance-crime fighting spreadsheet sleuth, born in fraud and fire. About the author: Cory Doctorow is a science fiction author, activist and journalist. He is the author of many books, most recently PICKS AND SHOVELS and THE BEZZLE (followups to RED TEAM BLUES) and THE LOST CAUSE, a solarpunk science fiction novel of hope amidst the climate emergency. He famously coined the term enshittification to describe the reduction in the quality of services provided (see: Google) as a consequence of profit-seeking. Tickets are £4.00. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of a book, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331. Voiced in Translation: How the real 'Nora' answered back | Seminar Room, Radcliffe Humanities Building, Radcliffe Observatory Quarter

May 19, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
Arts
Literary Arts
A workshop looking at the new translations of Ibsen’s plays A Doll’s House and When We Dead Awaken and Laura Kieler’s play Men of Honour, to be published by OUP in their Worlds Classics series in November 2025. Laura Kieler, the model for Nora in A Doll’s House, had a complex, ongoing interaction with Ibsen, conducted across several decades and, most intriguingly, through these three plays in which they speak to one another. With excerpts from the plays and other relevant texts voiced by professional actors, the workshop will look at Laura Kieler’s life, literary and sociopolitical works, her role in the provenance of Ibsen’s international fame, her response to his use of her ‘life’, here translated into English for the first time, and Ibsen’s subsequent justification of the (male) artist’s exploitation of lives and bodies. Context is all, and context makes for relevance. Laura Kieler’s voice is central to an understanding of Ibsen – and of her times and our times. The workshop will be led by the Kieler and Ibsen scholars Kirsten Shepherd and Tzen Sam, and by the translator Gaye Kynoch. Information Source: TORCH | eventbrite

SLICE OF LIFE: Karolina Ramqvist & Katie Goh in conversation | Blackwell's Bookshop

May 21, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
Arts
Literary Arts
We are thrilled to welcome Karolina Ramqvist and Katie Goh to the shop to discuss their memoirs, which both beautifully explore their history and experiences through food. Karolina and Katie will be in conversation with Ruby Martin. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy of either book. About BREAD & MILK: In Bread and Milk, Karolina Ramqvist traces a girlhood through food - she recalls the bag of tangerines devoured in one sitting outside her mother's bedroom, and delighting in the luxury of that extra knob of butter on her grandmother's rice pudding. In the thin spread of low-fat margarine on her mother's bread, and the pancakes on the counter each time she will be left alone for the night, the young Karolina learns that food connects the women in her life as much as it reveals the chasms between them. When she finds herself a single parent to a daughter of her own, food becomes the way for her to show her love, but also instils a complicated inheritance. Bread and Milk is a brazenly intelligent - and mouth-wateringly delicious - reflection on love, motherhood and family from one of Sweden's most notable literary stylists. About FOREIGN FRUIT: The orange we know, waxed in vats, gathered in red netting and stacked in supermarket displays, is not the same orange that grew from the first straggling orange grove that took root on the Tibetan plateau, part pomelo and part mandarin. The orange is a souvenir of history. Across time, it has been a harbinger of God and doom, fortune and failure, pleasure and suffering. It is a fruit containing metaphors, dreams, mythologies, superstitions, parables and histories within its tough rind. So, what happens when the fruit is peeled and each segment - each moment of history, each meaning in time - is pulled apart? In this distinct, subversive and intimate hybrid memoir, Katie Goh explores the orange as a means of understanding the world, and herself within it. What she finds is a world of violence, colonialism, resilience, survival, adaptation - and of unexpected beauty and sweetness against all odds. About the authors: Karolina Ramqvist is one of the most influential writers and feminists of her generation in Sweden. She has written five novels and is widely celebrated for her powerful explorations of contemporary issues such as sexuality, commercialisation, isolation and belonging. In 2015, Karolina was awarded the prestigious P.O. Enquist Literary Prize for The White City (Den vita staden), and for her ‘unique and strong position in Swedish literature’. She is the author of Bear Woman, published in 2023. Katie Goh is a writer, the First Person Editor at gal-dem and the Non-Fiction Editor at Extra Teeth literary magazine. She writes about culture and social issues for publications including i-D, the Guardian, the Independent, VICE, Huck, Nylon, Dazed and Crack. Her writing has been shortlisted for BBC Scotland and Wigtown Book Festival’s Anne Brown Essay Prize, PPA Scotland’s Young Journalist of the Year Award and the University of Glasgow’s Kavya Prize. Katie became a member of the UK Critics Circle in 2020. Katie’s short book of essays The End: Surviving the World Through Imagined Disasters was published by 404 Ink in 2021. It was a Reviewer’s Choice for The Big Issue’s Independent Books of 2021 and shortlisted for the inaugural Kavya Prize in 2022. Katie was awarded funding from Creative Scotland’s Open Fund for Individuals to research and develop this book proposal. She currently lives in Edinburgh. Emily MacGregor 'While The Music Lasts' with Laura Tunbridge | Blackwell's Bookshop

Oxford
Musical
Arts
While The Music Lasts When her father dies, music historian and trombonist Dr Emily MacGregor finds that music has become too much. Listening, let alone playing, is too difficult to cope with, and she can't listen to anything anymore. This is problematic given that she's a broadcaster, writer and academic working with classical music. It leads her on a journey of discovery: from the arrangement of an Isaac Albéniz piece she finds on her father's guitar stand, through encounters with psychologists, orchestras, summer schools and funeral celebrants, to the lives and works of individual composers who wrote music so often in the midst of loss. What is it about our experience of music that cuts so sharply to the heart of our emotions? And why is it more than any other artform painfully, exquistely crucial in the evoking of memories? Emily MacGregor Emily MacGregor is a writer, music historian and broadcaster based at King's College, London. She appears regulary as a music expert on BBC radio. Laura Tunbridge Laura Tunbridge, FBA, is a Professor of Music at the University of Oxford, specialising in Beethoven, Robert Schumann, song, and chamber music. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: You're nine when you get your first computer. It's not long before you discover porn. You don't know what you're watching, but you do know that you shouldn't tell anybody. Later, older, your first kiss is captured on camera and shared with everyone in your year. Part of the incessant cycle of posting, sharing and liking. Now, you can't remember a time when you didn't feel hollow inside. Now, you know that something has to change. Chilling, potent and intensely intimate, This Is How You Remember It is about a life lived online - and about finding another way when it's all you've ever known. It is an essential document. I wish it wasn't. I'm so glad it exists. - Jo Hamya, The Guardian About the author: Catherine Prasifka was born in Dublin. Her debut novel, None of This Is Serious, was an Irish Times bestseller and was picked as ‘one to watch’ for 2022 by the Irish Times, Stylist and the Irish Independent. Painting
Explore the metaphysical beauty of watercolour painting as a mark-making technique to document patterns from your life and dreams. Inspired by Barbara Steveni and the Fluxus artists she collaborated with, we’ll use watercolour as a pathway to abstraction –both as a means of expression and as a way to celebrate the patterns and rhythms that shape our thoughts and daily lives. No painting experience necessary! This session introduces basic watercolour techniques and new approaches to abstraction. Francis Wilson ELECTRIC SPARK The Enigma of Muriel Spark | Blackwell's Bookshop

Literary Arts
Electric Spark The word most commonly used to describe Muriel Spark is 'puzzling'. Spark was a puzzle, and so too are her books. She dealt in word games, tricks, and ciphers; her life was composed of weird accidents, strange coincidences and spooky events. Evelyn Waugh thought she was a saint, Bernard Levin said she was a witch, and she described herself as 'Muriel the Marvel with her X-ray eyes'. Following the clues, riddles, and instructions Spark planted for posterity in her biographies, fiction, autobiography and archives, Frances Wilson aims to crack her code. Electric Spark explores not the celebrated Dame Muriel but the apprentice mage discovering her powers. We return to her early years when everything was piled on: divorce, madness, murder, espionage, poverty, skulduggery, blackmail, love affairs, revenge, and a major religious conversion. If this sounds like a novel by Muriel Spark it is because the experiences of the 1940s and 1950s became, alchemically reduced, the material of her art. Francis Wilson Frances Wilson is a critic, journalist and the author of numerous biographies and works of non-fiction including Literary Seductions, The Courtesan's Revenge and The Ballad of Dorothy Wordsworth, which won the Rose Mary Crawshay Prize in 2009.
