Thursday, February 6th, 2025, 5:30pm-7:30pm Reception: 5:30-6pm Lecture, Film Screening, and Q and A: 6pm-7:30pm Hannaford Hall (Abromson Center), University of Southern Maine (Portland) Frank's Indigo: Entanglementsseries is a new and ongoing body of works (multimedia painting incorporating silkscreen, vintage African fabric, newsprint, acrylic, etc.) interrogating the unmitigated drama and tragedy of New World Slavery and Trans-Atlantic slave trade. The Osher Map Library has recently acquired Indigo: Entanglements, No. 6, for their permanent collection, a complex multimedia painting that engages with Maine's role in the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, via maps, documents, and other archival imagery. Palimpsest: Tales Spun From Sea And Memories narrates overlaying tales; fragments of a life and man: Quobna Ottobah Cugoano, born in the Gold Coast (Ghana) in the Fante village of Agimaque. Cugoano was one the most radical and central African British opponents to have actively engaged in the fight against slavery in the eighteenth century, England. His book Thoughts and Sentiments On The Evil Of Slavery, published in England after he gained his freedom, is one of the most direct criticisms of slavery by a writer of African descent. You can watch the trailer here. Billy Gérard Frank, born in Grenada, West Indies, is a multimedia artist and filmmaker. His research-driven practices mine personal issues related to race, exile, memory, global politics, and post-colonial and queer decoloniality. Frank challenges conventional narratives and creates counter-histories through his work, which has been showcased in solo and group exhibitions at institutions such as the Brooklyn Museum (2020) and the Butler Institute of American Art. His art is also part of several private collections and institutions, such as the National Academy Museum of Fine Arts and Design, Farnsworth Art Museum, Osher Map Library and Smith Center for Cartographic Education, among others. Frank represented Grenada at the 59th La Biennale di Venezia (2022) and was also part of the collective representing the island at the 58th La Biennale di Venezia (2019), and (2024) Smithsonian Design Triennial. He is a 2024 Creative Capital Awardee and has received numerous grants, including the Ford Foundation Grant for his 2022 La Biennale project. Stephen Fearing House Concert | Patchwork House Concerts
Feb 16, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Bedford
Stephen Fearing House Concert “A master of the finely-turned phrase and the perfectly-pitched line.”
Maverick Magazine Join us for an intimate evening with the legendary singer-songwriter, Stephen Fearing, at Patchwork House Concerts! This is a Sunday but the morrow is Family Day (i.e. a provincial holiday for most). Limited seats available, so grab your tickets now! Stephen Fearing has been named one of the finest songwriters in Canada and has built a national – and international – audience for his music, doing it old school through countless performances at intimate venues and on the concert stages of festivals and theatres across Canada, the US, the UK, and Europe. In 1996 he co-founded Blackie and the Rodeo Kings with Colin Linden and Tom Wilson. Originally intended to be a one-off collaboration to record a tribute album of songs written by Canadian folk music legend Willie P. Bennett, the trio quickly recognized they had created something worthy of further exploration and both critics and audiences agreed. More than 22 years later, with nine albums and a JUNO award to their credit, the band has become one of the most respected names in North American roots-rock. Their musical collaborators include Emmy Lou Harris, Nick Lowe, City and Colour, Keb’ Mo’, Jason Isbell, Lucinda Williams, Bruce Cockburn, Sam Phillips, Pam Tillis, Vince Gill, Cassandra Wilson, Serena Ryder, Holy Cole, and Mary Margaret O’Hara. In 1998, Stephen Fearing met Andy White backstage at the Winnipeg Folk Festival and a fast friendship was formed. As the duo Fearing & White they have released two critically-acclaimed albums and toured throughout Canada and the UK. More recently, Fearing has been collaborating with the Danish backing band and folk music pioneers, The Sentimentals. In 2023, they releasef their joint album Vejpoesi recorded in Frederikshavn, Denmark and Hamilton. MC Hansen, also with The Sentimentals, will be joining Stephen at Patchwork. Fearing has released ten albums as a solo artist, featuring a who's who of musical guests (Bruce Cockburn, Margo Timmons, Rose Cousins, Richard Thompson, Shawn Colvin, and Sarah McLachlan). When not working behind the microphone, he spends time producing records including Suzie Vinnick’s JUNO Award-nominated album Happy Here. Like the guests on his albums, the many awards and nominations that have come his way over the years speak to the respect he has earned among his peers, presenters, and critics. His abiding love for his craft and ability to delight audiences are further reflected in multiple JUNO and Canadian Folk Music Awards nominations and awards and an ever-expanding touring circuit throughout North America, the UK, and Europe. For his album Every Soul’s a Sailor he was awarded the 2017 Worldwide Album of the Year by Blues & Roots Radio and named 2017 Contemporary Singer of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. “Getting on stage is the fun part, especially when the adrenaline kicks in,” Fearing says, with a broad smile. “People want to escape and be taken on a journey. I build my shows so they do just that.” Visit his youtube channel for a taste of what is in store. Tickets for this ride are $30 + fees. Like all of our house concerts, 100 % of the door will go directly to the artists. We provide the stage, chairs and hopefully a room filled with eager listeners. Snacks and soft drinks will be offered; otherwise it is BYOB. Bringing music-loving-friends and visiting family members is strongly encouraged. Monique & George

Celebration: Fiona Bennett 'On the Brink of Touch' (in-person/streamed) | The Bedford
Feb 26, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Bedford
Join us in the ballroom at the Bedford in Balham to celebrate this debut collection by Fiona Bennett. Poems from the collection will be read by poets from Fiona's cohort at the Poetry School. The Poetry Exchange will be livestreaming the event for those that cannot attend in person. Fiona Bennett was the founder and director of The Poetry Exchange. Her poetry has been featured in a wide range of journals in the UK, the USA and on BBC radio. With a background in theatre, Fiona delivered artful interventions in organisational, community and education settings across the world, including Shakespeare’s Globe, The Royal National Theatre, Setagaya Theatre Tokyo and British Council Mumbai. She was a co-director of The Map Consortium. Fiona sadly died in 2024 after a short illness, but not before she could complete this, her debut collection. Fiona Bennett's poems are often about gesture, particularly small gestures between people, barely registered, but vital in how we communicate with each other. Although she could write about difficulty and hardship with a clear and focused eye, her poems on the whole celebrate being in the world - recording the joy of seeing something extraordinary and beautiful, the power of touch and speech and dance. In that sense, her poems are extensions of her way of being, her gentle presence, her humanity; although her absence is keenly felt, it is a consolation to know that her voice will continue to radiate through this stunning collection.
Tamar Yoseloff
Fiona Bennett wrote a poetry of incandescence. The blaze of the poems is so fierce it obliterates the past tense, shines on a realm of moments brilliantly caught, the trembling light of first glimpses, last touches, those times where human relations turn and the price of love is infinitely paid. This book is her memorial, but not a stone - a flame, light made from heat, the tense of what is now, the tense of what is always.
