About the Cause -
Freedom Youth Foundation – Success Without a Scoreboard (freedom-youth.org)
Freedom Youth Foundation (FYF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is dedicated to making a significant impact in the lives of the children that need us the most, particularly those in foster care. Our mission is multifaceted: we provide sports clinics, financial literacy education, mentorship, and employment training to empower these youth in building successful futures.
We recognize the unique power of athletics as a universal language, effective in teaching essential life skills such as accountability, leadership, and the value of having a team. In recent years, sports have emerged as a cost-effective and impactful means in various humanitarian and developmental efforts, known for their ability to engage and inspire people across all ages, genders, and backgrounds.
A critical aspect of our program is financial literacy and employment training. As these young individuals approach the crucial transition out of foster care, we equip them with vital knowledge about personal finance, including budgeting, banking, understanding debt and credit cards, and more.
Additionally, our employment alliance offers invaluable support through resume writing assistance and mock interviews, aiming to secure job placements for them.
Our goal is to go beyond preparation—we strive to see our foster youth thrive. At FYF, we are committed to offering hope and opportunity where it's needed most, through our programs.
Please visit our website to learn more, explore volunteer opportunities, and to make a donation!

The Teaching for Biliteracy Summer Institute
brings together district and school-level teams of educators to engage in a deep dive into the instructional, programmatic, and curricular elements of teaching for biliteracy and the Bridge. This robust, multi-day institute will include large-group networking experiences and small-group sessions focused on specific biliteracy topics.
The institute will feature:
· Examples of the strategic use of Spanish (or other non-English language) and English in teaching for biliteracy in dual language one- and two-way immersion programs.
· Best practices in teaching Spanish (or other non-English language) and English literacy.
· Sample biliteracy instruction and strategies that support the Bridge between languages.
· Biliteracy unit framework for developing and delivering standards-based biliteracy units of instruction that integrate the teaching of language, literacy, and content.
· Biliteracy schedules, language and content allocation plans, biliteracy curriculum maps, and other programmatic systems and structures to support biliteracy instruction.
Target Audience:
· This institute is designed for educators working in dual language programs that provide Spanish literacy (or a non-English language) and English literacy to students in one-way (AKA development bilingual or maintenance bilingual) or two-way immersion programs.
· It is recommended that teams of teachers and administrators attend together. Effective makeup of teams includes teachers and decision-makers, and those who support teachers such as coaches, specialists, principals and assistant principals, curriculum directors, literacy directors, bilingual directors, assistant superintendents, and school board members. We take a systems approach to implementing teaching for biliteracy; therefore, we will be sharing a number of structures that will require understanding and support on the part of teachers, leadership, and decision-makers to ensure they are well-implemented.
Institute Location:
This institute will occur at the Courtyard by Marriott in Oxnard, CA. Oxnard is located in Ventura County, about 60 miles northwest of Los Angeles. It's a classic stop on a coastal California road trip because it's the meeting point of Pacific Coast Highway and Highway 101. Oxnard is known for its fresh seafood, beaches, agriculture, taquerias, and Victorian architecture. Its harbor is a picturesque access point to Channel Islands National Park, known for the diversity of wildlife you'll find nowhere else. The world-famous activist and union pioneer César Chávez spent his childhood in Oxnard, and many streets and schools are named after him.
Once you are registered, we will email you a link for a discounted hotel rate. The hotel features plentiful free, onsite parking. As the event approaches, the institute agenda and other institute related information will be emailed to registered participants.
