So many of us have absorbed the idea that art should look a certain way–that there is somehow a right and a wrong when it comes to creativity. Our path to expression becomes clear when we stop trying to create in the way we think we are “supposed” to and start getting in touch with what naturally flows through us if we allow it. Charcoal and newsprint paper will be available by donation on the day. Feel free to bring your own art supplies! However, please no oil paints or spray paints. Suggested donation for this event is £10 – £15. There are costs involved to run this event and your contributions help to make this possible, however no-one will be turned away for lack of funds. A keen reader of Romantic Mystery, Fantasy, and Science Fiction novels, he set out to write within these genres. His debut novel, Out of Humanity, was released in October 2023 after two and a half years in development. Set in modern-day Nottingham, the book explores themes of new beginnings, romance, and mystery. His latest novel, The Ironstone Bible, leans further into the Romantic Mystery genre and is set in the North Yorkshire Moors. Inspired by a ghostly encounter of his own and a family connection to the region’s ironstone mining history, The Ironstone Bible was published in October 2024. The story of Britain’s ceramic history spans 6000 years from the first pots created by early Neolithic farmers to 21st century high tech applications. It’s a story of technological innovation, of changes in society and taste and of pioneering and driven individuals. Located in the King's Room, the museum's new ceramics gallery, sub-titled ‘A Potted History of Britain’, and curated by Julian Richards, the new displays illustrate this long, complex and fascinating history using objects from the museum’s own collections augmented by loans from other museums and individuals. In this talk he will introduce the gallery and the ideas behind it as well as some of the frustrations at not being able to source some of the pots that he would dearly have loved to have exhibited. Dr Julian Richards BA FSA is by training and profession an archaeologist with a speciality in British prehistory and particularly Stonehenge. He also has a long-standing fascination with ceramics of all periods, in particular the products of the Arts and Crafts movement. Although Julian has curated temporary and travelling museum exhibitions relating to Stonehenge in both the UK and abroad, this gallery is his first foray into ceramics. As a broadcaster he presented ‘Meet the Ancestors’ and ‘Blood of the Vikings’ on BBC television and ‘Mapping the Town’ on BBC Radio 4.
