Louis C. Elson Lecture: Samir Odeh-Tamimi | Holden Chapel
Sep 23, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Harvard
Samir Odeh-Tamimi’s vivid and rhythmically intense musical language reveals an archaic power at times. Born in Jaljulia near Tel Aviv in 1970 and enthusiastic about both European classical music and the aesthetics of New Music, the composer came to Germany at the age of 22 and studied musicology and composition. In addition to engaging with compositional role models such as Giacinto Scelsi and Iannis Xenakis, he became increasingly involved with Arabic music during this time. His intensive research into the history of the ancient Orient and ancient Greece has since inspired his music more and more. Samir Odeh-Tamimi’s works are regularly performed at renowned festivals and concert halls throughout Europe, and he has received commissions from Deutschlandfunk, Saarländischer Rundfunk, Donaueschinger Musiktage, the European Center for the Arts Hellerau, WDR and Bayerischer Rund-funk/musica viva. In 2010, his music theatre piece Leila und Madschnun had its world premiere at the Ruhrtriennale in Bochum. As part of the project into Istanbul, initiated by the Ensemble Modern and the Siemens Arts Program in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut, he composed a piece for Ensemble Modern in 2008 inspired by his stay in the Turkish metropolis. In recent years, Samir Odeh-Tamimi has also worked in close collaboration with the Boulanger Trio and Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart. The singers have since travelled to the composer’s birthplace, his parents’ home near Tel Aviv, to discover his musical roots in preparation for a new work to be premiered at Stuttgart’s Eclat Festival. For this Louis C. Elson Lecture, Samir Odeh-Tamimi will discuss his second opera, L'Apocalypse Arabe. In this music theatre work, the Israeli-Palestinian composer Samir Odeh-Tamimi turns to a significant contemporary Lebanese work. Created in 1975 and based on events at the time, the collection The Arab Apocalypse by the painter and poet Etel Adnan offers a gripping depiction of the civil war in Lebanon. This work—a virulent denunciation of crimes that sprung from intolerance—is like no other, and profoundly touched and inspired Samir Odeh-Tamimi and the Franco-Lebanese stage director Pierre Audi. Together, they strove to give these songs, interspersed with mysterious drawings, the form of musical theatre, which could highlight both the actual events and their universality. The Arab Apocalypse was already prophetic when it was written and continues to provide visionary insight into the hardships that Lebanon faces today.

Harvard
Rebecca Spiegel is working as a teacher in New Orleans when she learns of her sister’s suicide. Only after the funeral does shock give way to grief—and to many questions. How could Emily do this to herself? How could she have abandoned all those who loved her? And what could have been done differently to prevent this devastating loss? In the days and weeks that follow, Spiegel embarks on a search for answers. She unpacks family history, documents the last traces of her sister’s life, and questions what more she could have done to prevent her death. What she finds instead is that there is no narrative on the other side of grief like this. There is no answer, no easy resolution—only those that leave and those that keep living. Unflinchingly honest, visceral, and raw, this courageous elegy lays bare the hard realities of surviving the loss of a loved one. Rebecca Spiegel teaches writing in Philadelphia, where she lives with her family. Brian D. Goldstein, “‘These Contradictory Things’: Max Bond's Harvard” | Harvard University Graduate School Of Design
Apr 23, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Harvard
Join us for “‘These Contradictory Things’: Max Bond’s Harvard,” a lecture that Brian D. Goldstein will give on the occasion of the naming of the J. Max Bond Jr. Room in Gund Hall. Bond—a graduate of Harvard College and the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD)—was characterized in his 2009 New York Times obituary as a “voice of conscience within his profession on issues of racial and economic justice.” He understood cities as instruments of justice and equality for their inhabitants. “Architecture,” he asserted, “inevitably involves all the larger issues of society.” This conviction that architecture has the capacity to produce a just society was foundational to Bond’s own extensive practice as an architect: as executive director of the Architects’ Renewal Committee in Harlem (ARCH); as a professor of architecture; as chair of the Division of Architecture at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University; and as dean of the School of Architecture and Environmental Studies at the City College of New York. Bond graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College in 1955 and as an undergraduate was also inducted into the academic honor society Phi Beta Kappa. He graduated from the Department of Architecture at the GSD in 1958. Over the course of his career, Bond became an extraordinarily influential figure in architecture and urbanism. His success came both because of and despite his experience at Harvard. At the GSD, Bond absorbed the idealism of modernist architecture and its promise to effect social change, but his time at Harvard was also marked with racist episodes that included a cross burning outside his undergraduate dormitory in Harvard Yard. On another occasion, a GSD faculty member discouraged Bond from pursuing architecture as a course of study because that faculty member believed it to be a profession suited mainly for white men. That Bond was able to draw on his education at the GSD—its wisdom and its failures—as well as his lived experience of the University community to articulate a new vision for the field of architecture as an agent of social change is as much a testament to his perseverance as it is to his insight and talent. Naming the largest classroom in Gund Hall the “J. Max Bond Jr. Room” celebrates the enormous influence and breadth of Bond’s career and acknowledges how unwelcoming Harvard was for him and other Black students who were subjected to similar experiences at the GSD. With this dedication, the GSD inscribes Bond’s name on the largest classroom in Gund Hall to give him a permanent home on Harvard’s campus, even if posthumously, and to keep the memory of his experience and the legacy of his achievements alive in this School. Read more about Bond’s biography and career in architecture at the GSD’s African American Design Nexus.
