In partnership with Equinox, 100% of all dollars raised go to Memorial Sloan Kettering. KStew’s Brainstorm, our team, has ridden for the last 5 years to raise money for this incredible organization. The team is in celebration of Krissy, and the perfect blend of exercise, good vibes & philanthropy for a cause near to our hearts. Since our first ride in February 2020, we have raised over $50,000 and contributions like ours led to medical breakthroughs and treatments,
including one specifically for glioma

Make a Traditional English Shavehorse | Applestore Cafe
May 10, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Scorton
Overview
The Shave horse is one of the most important green woodworking devices, and has been around for centuries in one form or another. In todays fast paced world, using a shavehorse to carve a billet of greenwood is a great way to slow down and unwind, whilst making something practical and useful.
Rather than simply assembling your shavehorse from prepared materials, you will learn how to use of a range of hand tools, as well as a shavehorse and pole lathe to make many of the components, before assembling your very own hand crafted shavehorse. You will split wood, measure wood, carve wood, turn wood, cut wood, whack wood, and even knock square pegs into round holes (having first made the pegs)! After all this work, you will have the satisfaction of a job well done, and the excitement of all the carving adventures yet to come on your shavehorse!
What you need to know
There is a maximum of just three participants on this course, ensuring a high quality experience and as much help as needed to get your shavehorse completed, without needing to rush. This course runs over two days, starting at 10am and finishing at 5pm each day (with a possible earlier finish on day two)
This course is suitable for anyone 18 years+ and no previous wood-crafting skills are necessary. You can expect a busy couple of days, and there is a lot to get through, but help is always on hand if needed, and we will ensure you leave with your shavehorse ready to use.
Please wear clothing that is suitable for the expected weather conditions and that you don't mind getting a little messy, and good fitting, sturdy footwear with a grippy sole. Your shavehorse can be dismantled and should fit into all but the smallest of cars - please call to check.
Refreshments will be provided but please provide your own lunch, and you can make use of the Applestore café for take out (please note that you will not have time for a sit in lunch at the café).

Greenwood Skills Day | Applestore Cafe
May 17, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Scorton
What's It All About?
Greenwood is any wood that is freshly harvested and is still full of moisture - much easier to carve with hand tools than dry, seasoned wood that is much harder.
There is something timeless and deeply rewarding about carving a piece of freshly harvested greenwood using simple hand tools, and is something humans have been doing for thousands of years. All the wood we use on this course has been sustainably harvested from our own woodland, and whatever you make will be yours to take home, and you will have a number of projects to choose from. This course is suitable for complete beginers but is also a good foundation to carry on your own whittling back home, with some basic tool advice on top of the skills you will learn.
Working with any sharp-edge tools presents an element of risk, but by learning some basic principles and techniques you will be better prepared to manage that risk. You will learn how to safely use a carving axe with a chopping block, a carving knife, a shavehorse & drawknife.
This is a great way to unwind, connect with nature and explore your more creative side. The course will run from my woodland workshop in Ghyll Wood on the fabulous Wyresdale Park estate. This course will be based outside with an option to use our indoor space should the weather dictate.
What you need to know
This course is suitable for anyone 18 years+ and no previous wood-crafting skills are necessary. Children from 12 years old can attend if they are accompanied by an adult who is also a paying participant (but please contact to discuss before booking). As with all our courses a private booking can also be made for individuals and small family or friend groups
Please wear clothing that is suitable for the expected weather conditions and that you don't mind getting a little messy, and good fitting, sturdy footwear with a grippy sole. Refreshments will be provided but please provide your own lunch, and you can make use of the Applestore café for take out (please note that you will not have time for a sit in lunch at the café).
