Exhibitions
Through the expansive finding of fossils and development of new techniques and methods, the 19th century transformed our understanding of the history of Earth. Breaking Ground explores these themes through William Buckland, geologist and palaeontologist, and Mary Buckland (née Morland), a scientific illustrator, the couple at the heart of this exhibition. They both helped to establish new scientific methods and ideas, which led to fascinating discoveries in palaeontology, including the first ever dinosaur to be named to science.

Voiced in Translation: How the real 'Nora' answered back | Seminar Room, Radcliffe Humanities Building, Radcliffe Observatory Quarter

May 19, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
Arts
Literary Arts
A workshop looking at the new translations of Ibsen’s plays A Doll’s House and When We Dead Awaken and Laura Kieler’s play Men of Honour, to be published by OUP in their Worlds Classics series in November 2025. Laura Kieler, the model for Nora in A Doll’s House, had a complex, ongoing interaction with Ibsen, conducted across several decades and, most intriguingly, through these three plays in which they speak to one another. With excerpts from the plays and other relevant texts voiced by professional actors, the workshop will look at Laura Kieler’s life, literary and sociopolitical works, her role in the provenance of Ibsen’s international fame, her response to his use of her ‘life’, here translated into English for the first time, and Ibsen’s subsequent justification of the (male) artist’s exploitation of lives and bodies. Context is all, and context makes for relevance. Laura Kieler’s voice is central to an understanding of Ibsen – and of her times and our times. The workshop will be led by the Kieler and Ibsen scholars Kirsten Shepherd and Tzen Sam, and by the translator Gaye Kynoch. Information Source: TORCH | eventbrite

SLICE OF LIFE: Karolina Ramqvist & Katie Goh in conversation | Blackwell's Bookshop

May 21, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
Arts
Literary Arts
We are thrilled to welcome Karolina Ramqvist and Katie Goh to the shop to discuss their memoirs, which both beautifully explore their history and experiences through food. Karolina and Katie will be in conversation with Ruby Martin. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy of either book. About BREAD & MILK: In Bread and Milk, Karolina Ramqvist traces a girlhood through food - she recalls the bag of tangerines devoured in one sitting outside her mother's bedroom, and delighting in the luxury of that extra knob of butter on her grandmother's rice pudding. In the thin spread of low-fat margarine on her mother's bread, and the pancakes on the counter each time she will be left alone for the night, the young Karolina learns that food connects the women in her life as much as it reveals the chasms between them. When she finds herself a single parent to a daughter of her own, food becomes the way for her to show her love, but also instils a complicated inheritance. Bread and Milk is a brazenly intelligent - and mouth-wateringly delicious - reflection on love, motherhood and family from one of Sweden's most notable literary stylists. About FOREIGN FRUIT: The orange we know, waxed in vats, gathered in red netting and stacked in supermarket displays, is not the same orange that grew from the first straggling orange grove that took root on the Tibetan plateau, part pomelo and part mandarin. The orange is a souvenir of history. Across time, it has been a harbinger of God and doom, fortune and failure, pleasure and suffering. It is a fruit containing metaphors, dreams, mythologies, superstitions, parables and histories within its tough rind. So, what happens when the fruit is peeled and each segment - each moment of history, each meaning in time - is pulled apart? In this distinct, subversive and intimate hybrid memoir, Katie Goh explores the orange as a means of understanding the world, and herself within it. What she finds is a world of violence, colonialism, resilience, survival, adaptation - and of unexpected beauty and sweetness against all odds. About the authors: Karolina Ramqvist is one of the most influential writers and feminists of her generation in Sweden. She has written five novels and is widely celebrated for her powerful explorations of contemporary issues such as sexuality, commercialisation, isolation and belonging. In 2015, Karolina was awarded the prestigious P.O. Enquist Literary Prize for The White City (Den vita staden), and for her ‘unique and strong position in Swedish literature’. She is the author of Bear Woman, published in 2023. Katie Goh is a writer, the First Person Editor at gal-dem and the Non-Fiction Editor at Extra Teeth literary magazine. She writes about culture and social issues for publications including i-D, the Guardian, the Independent, VICE, Huck, Nylon, Dazed and Crack. Her writing has been shortlisted for BBC Scotland and Wigtown Book Festival’s Anne Brown Essay Prize, PPA Scotland’s Young Journalist of the Year Award and the University of Glasgow’s Kavya Prize. Katie became a member of the UK Critics Circle in 2020. Katie’s short book of essays The End: Surviving the World Through Imagined Disasters was published by 404 Ink in 2021. It was a Reviewer’s Choice for The Big Issue’s Independent Books of 2021 and shortlisted for the inaugural Kavya Prize in 2022. Katie was awarded funding from Creative Scotland’s Open Fund for Individuals to research and develop this book proposal. She currently lives in Edinburgh. Emily MacGregor 'While The Music Lasts' with Laura Tunbridge | Blackwell's Bookshop

May 26, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
Musical
Arts
While The Music Lasts When her father dies, music historian and trombonist Dr Emily MacGregor finds that music has become too much. Listening, let alone playing, is too difficult to cope with, and she can't listen to anything anymore. This is problematic given that she's a broadcaster, writer and academic working with classical music. It leads her on a journey of discovery: from the arrangement of an Isaac Albéniz piece she finds on her father's guitar stand, through encounters with psychologists, orchestras, summer schools and funeral celebrants, to the lives and works of individual composers who wrote music so often in the midst of loss. What is it about our experience of music that cuts so sharply to the heart of our emotions? And why is it more than any other artform painfully, exquistely crucial in the evoking of memories? Emily MacGregor Emily MacGregor is a writer, music historian and broadcaster based at King's College, London. She appears regulary as a music expert on BBC radio. Laura Tunbridge Laura Tunbridge, FBA, is a Professor of Music at the University of Oxford, specialising in Beethoven, Robert Schumann, song, and chamber music. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: You're nine when you get your first computer. It's not long before you discover porn. You don't know what you're watching, but you do know that you shouldn't tell anybody. Later, older, your first kiss is captured on camera and shared with everyone in your year. Part of the incessant cycle of posting, sharing and liking. Now, you can't remember a time when you didn't feel hollow inside. Now, you know that something has to change. Chilling, potent and intensely intimate, This Is How You Remember It is about a life lived online - and about finding another way when it's all you've ever known. It is an essential document. I wish it wasn't. I'm so glad it exists. - Jo Hamya, The Guardian About the author: Catherine Prasifka was born in Dublin. Her debut novel, None of This Is Serious, was an Irish Times bestseller and was picked as ‘one to watch’ for 2022 by the Irish Times, Stylist and the Irish Independent. Painting
Explore the metaphysical beauty of watercolour painting as a mark-making technique to document patterns from your life and dreams. Inspired by Barbara Steveni and the Fluxus artists she collaborated with, we’ll use watercolour as a pathway to abstraction –both as a means of expression and as a way to celebrate the patterns and rhythms that shape our thoughts and daily lives. No painting experience necessary! This session introduces basic watercolour techniques and new approaches to abstraction. It’s an invitation to slow down, reflect, and notice beauty in the smallest details, all while sharing the process in a welcoming environment. This is the third of three evening classes inspired by our current exhibition Barbara Steveni: I Find Myself. Tickets are sold per session to keep things flexible, but we encourage you to attend all three if you can! Friends received early booking on this event. Find out more about joining as a Friend here. The lecture will take place the week following Rabindra Jayanti, the annual cultural festival in remembrance of Tagore. Alice Vincent HARK: HOW WOMEN LISTEN with Nell Frizzell | Blackwell's Bookshop

May 13, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
Arts
Literary Arts
Hark We're told women are good at listening, but we rarely examine what they're listening to, what their worlds sound like, or how it feels to be expected to listen in a world of noise made by men. Like so many of us, Alice Vincent had become overwhelmed by the sensory overload punctuating our every moment. And then, a baby's heartbeat arrived. A rapid, pulsing whoosh of white noise. An undeniable rhythm. Once again, Alice's life became cacophonous - both with a new child, but also with the societal pressures that motherhood holds. What followed was a personal quest to rediscover sound as something alive and vital and restorative. Beyond music, Alice's journey takes her into new corners of listening: from the phantom crying heard by mothers across the world to the nightingale's song and the crackle of the Aurora Borealis. As our attention spans shrink and our sense of disconnection grows, Alice wants to find out if sound - seeking it, trying to hold on to it, making space for it in her life - can reconnect her not only to lost parts of herself but to a life more consciously lived. Hark is a book for women who feel unheard and a means of listening more deeply in a world that has grown too loud. Alice Vincent Alice Vincent is a writer, broadcaster and multi-platform storyteller fascinated by the often-overlooked parts of life. Her books include the bestselling Why Women Grow: Stories of Soil, Sisterhood and Survival, which was shortlisted in the 2023 Books Are My Bag Readers Awards and Rootbound, Rewilding a Life. Both were longlisted for the Wainwright Prize. A career journalist, she was a writer and editor on the arts desk of The Telegraph before joining Penguin as an editor. Now a columnist for The Guardian and Gardens Illustrated, Alice has offered readers her fresh approach to nature, gardening and life in the city as a columnist for The Telegraph and The New Statesman. She writes for titles including Vogue, The Financial Times, The Sunday Times and The Observer. Information Source: Blackwell's, Broad Street Oxford | eventbrite

Katharina Volckmer & Nussaibah Younis in conversation with Naomi Frisby | Blackwell's Bookshop

May 13, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
Arts
Literary Arts
We are thrilled to be welcoming Katharina Volckmer and Nussaibah Younis to the shop for an evening of bold, outlandish fiction. Katharina and Nussaibah will be discussing their novels CALLS MAY BE RECORDED FOR TRAINING AND MONITORING PURPOSES and FUNDAMENTALLY in conversation with Naomi Frisby. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy of either book. About the books: About CALLS MAY BE RECORDED: In a London call centre, Jimmie helps holiday makers with myriad problems, but he is hardly a model employee. He doesn't simply provide customer service to his clients and advice to his colleagues, he gets involved in their fantasies and frustrations, and now he's about to be hauled up in front of the boss. From perfecting his roles as an undertaker and as a clown to performing duties above and beyond his employment contract, he debates the importance of the optimum shade for lipstick and bathroom walls, the pros and cons of nudist versus textile, as well as the psychological impacts of an Italian mother and an emotional support animal. This is the second, ribald, scatological novel from the brilliant author of The Appointment. Jimmie's sly, sharp, melancholy insights into the indignities of a world which aims to eliminate the human will make you laugh, weep and never look the same way at an electric carving knife again. About FUNDAMENTALLY: Nadia is an academic who's been disowned by her puritanical mother and dumped by her lover, Rosy. She decides to make a getaway, accepting a UN job in Iraq. Tasked with rehabilitating ISIS women, Nadia becomes mired in the opaque world of international aid, surrounded by bumbling colleagues. Sara is a precocious and sweary East Londoner who joined ISIS at just fifteen. Nadia is struck by how similar they are: both feisty and opinionated, from a Muslim background, with a shared love of Dairy Milk and rude pick-up lines. A powerful friendship forms between the two women, until a secret confession from Sara threatens everything Nadia has been working for. A bitingly original, wildly funny and razor-sharp exploration of love, family, religion and the decisions we make in pursuit of belonging, Fundamentally upends and explores a defining controversy of our age with heart, complexity and humour. About the authors: Katharina Volckmer was born in Germany in 1987. She now lives in London where she works for a literary agency. Her first novel The Appointment has been translated into over 15 languages and has been adapted for the stage and radio in several countries. This book is filled with brilliant dialogue, unexpected turns, some very dirty talk with sudden bursts of hilarity, and then fierce sadness. It exudes dark energy. It is highly original. It gives pleasure on every page. - Colm Tóibín, author of Brooklyn and Long Island Dr. Nussaibah Younisis a peace-building practitioner and a globally recognized expert on contemporary Iraq. She has a PhD in international affairs from Durham University in the UK and a BA in modern history and English from the University of Oxford. Dr. Younis was a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council in Washington, DC, where she directed the Future of Iraq Task Force and offered strategic advice to US government agencies on Iraq policy. Dr. Younis has published op-eds in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Guardian, and has provided on-air commentary for the BBC and Al Jazeera. She was born in the United Kingdom to an Iraqi father and a Pakistani mother, and currently lives in London. Younis is a fantastic comic writer: caustic, pitiless, unafraid, with razor-sharp powers of observation. The book is laugh-out-loud funny, and many of the jokes, besides being hilarious, are jaw-dropping in their audacity. - Jonathan Coe Tickets are £4.00.
