Literary Arts
Join us for an exciting evening with New York Times bestselling author Casey Sherman as he discusses his latest gripping title, Blood in the Water. Come hear Sherman discuss his extensive research process, the real people behind the story, and how these events resonate in today’s world. There will be a Q&A session following the talk, giving attendees the chance to ask questions and engage with the author directly. ____________________ About Blood in the Water: When Nathan Carman, a young man with a complicated past, is miraculously rescued from a lifeboat bobbing in the unforgiving North Atlantic, questions swirl about the fate of his mother, who is presumed to have drowned when their fishing boat sank. Nathan is in remarkably good shape for being lost at sea for a week, and his account of what exactly happened out there on the waves raises questions from family members and law enforcement. Nathan's story of a fishing trip gone awry doesn't quite add up, and suspicion mounts. The mysterious murder of Nathan's multi-millionaire grandfather a few years before had made Nathan's mother an extremely wealthy woman. With a 50-million-dollar fortune at stake, did Nathan commit the ultimate betrayal? Or is there more to this tragic tale than meets the eye? - Global Release Date: April 8, 2025 Casey Sherman’s Blood in the Water is a riveting dive into a chilling true crime. With his trademark storytelling—an unparalleled depth and detail of research blended with a journalist's keen eye for how the truth really is stranger than fiction, Sherman exposes the dark undercurrents of money, betrayal, and deadly secrets. Seamlessly navigating between the many real-life characters that found themselves tangled up in this shocking true story, Sherman weaves a compelling and compulsively binge worthy tale. From the first wave of suspicion to the final shocking depths of revelation, this is a page-turner. Recommended for true-crime junkies (calling Murdaugh saga fans!) as well as those new to the genre. -Sara DiVello, author of “Broadway Butterfly: A Thriller;” Founder and Host of Mystery and Thriller Mavens. Bitesize | Painters & ‘the Canon’: the Image of the Artist, Past & Present | The Levinsky Gallery

Apr 30, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Plymouth
Arts
Fine Art
Join Dr Jenny Graham in our latest Bitesize talk for a discussion on how artists model themselves on those who came before them. The idea of ‘the artist’ as a recognisable personality, a cult figure, a genius, even, has evolved persistently since the Renaissance. Jenny will explore how living artists from different periods have modelled themselves on those that came before, on the painters of the past. These emulations were not just about the style of the so-called ‘old masters’ but about the details of their lives and character traits to be gleaned from art biographies. Beginning with the influence of Giorgio Vasari’s Lives of the Artists (1568) and continuing up to the present, Jenny will examine the key features of the ‘life-and-work’ genre, as well as its problems and limitations. Topics to be explored include the ‘studio’ painting, the rise of the artist monograph, and ‘the artist’ in poetry, the novel and film. Dr Jenny Graham is an Associate Professor in Art History at the University of Plymouth and an expert in Renaissance studies. She is the author of Inventing Van Eyck: The Remaking of an Artist for the Modern Age (Oxford and New York, 2007) and has written and lectured widely in this field, including an essay for The Cambridge Companion to the Pre-Raphaelites. Jenny’s current research is focused on the afterlife of Vasari’s famous biographies in the nineteenth century, with recent publications looking at John Ruskin’s response to Vasari’s Lives, and the cult of Fra Filippo Lippi in the nineteenth century. Jenny is a regular speaker for the National Gallery, London. Date: Wednesday 30 April 2025 Time: 13:00–13:45 Venue: The Levinsky Gallery Ticket information: Free, booking required This event is associated with Kingdom, an exhibition by Danny Fox in The Levinsky Gallery 12 April – 7 June. Reflections of an Irish Grandson is a deeply emotional and personal exploration of family history, identity, and the lasting influence of one’s roots. Vincent shares how Bridget’s story shaped his own understanding of family, heritage, and the importance of remembering the past. This book serves as both a tribute to his grandmother’s spirit and a preservation of the rich history of the Meade family that will resonate with readers of all backgrounds. -- I remember my grandmother's Irish accent and Irish expressions and stories of Ireland and I came to learn later about the difficulties and hardships confronting my grandmother and her Meade family in Ireland at a time when Britain still ruled that country very harshly. I wanted, for many years, to discover all that I could about why she left a beloved homeland, along with so many others, and about the struggles of the family she left behind. I set out to find that story and it is written in my Reflections of an Irish Grandson. Information Source: Book Love | eventbrite

Into The Light | Barbican Theatre

Plymouth
Arts
"Into the Light" is a dynamic dance piece that embodies the transformative journey from fear to empowerment. Through a captivating interplay of light and shadows, the work explores the psychological process of confronting the unknown, shedding fear, and embracing clarity. The dancers navigate a world of darkness, where their own fears take shape, and gradually move toward the light, symbolising truth, awareness, and connection. The piece blends contemporary dance with hip hop, using movement to reflect both the internal struggle and the eventual breakthrough. The choreography explores the tension between vulnerability and strength, as the dancers face their darkest fears, ultimately finding courage and unity in the light. Into the Light is an exploration of fearlessness—an invitation to confront the unknown, embrace personal transformation, and step into a space of empowerment and shared strength. The piece culminates in a powerful, celebratory moment of connection, where the dancers, now fearless, shine together in the light, symbolizing the triumph of courage over fear. Monoprinting Monoprinting is an ideal way to experiment with tone, composition, and mark-making, making it a great tool for generating ideas and developing creative work. You will be contacted a week before the workshop with information about how to get to the Print Room at AUP, parking and any other useful information. More about Jemma Gunning Jemma Gunning is a printmaker whose work explores the fragility of our built environment, focusing on derelict and abandoned spaces. Using traditional intaglio techniques and expressive monoprinting, she captures the haunting beauty of ruins, layering marks to evoke histories embedded within crumbling architecture. Her practice is driven by a fascination with places in flux—industrial remnants, forgotten sites, and landscapes shaped by time and neglect. Recently, she has been recording dramatic mountain landscapes, where the terrain is constantly shifting, much like the built environment she studies. Through her work, she highlights themes of impermanence, societal shifts, and the traces we leave behind. An RWA Academician and a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE), Jemma co-founded the Bristol Print Collective and has exhibited widely across the UK. Her work is held in private and public collections, including the V&A, the Ashmolean Museum, and the RWA. She teaches printmaking workshops and recently established her own etching studio, where she continues to develop new work. www.jemmagunning.com Jemma will also be giving a talk at Print In Action so if you are interested in learning more please head to Home - Real Art Make Print for details.
