Cumberland
Join us for a relaxed exhibition tour designed for parents and carers of babies. Led by Bristol-based producer Jane Porter, enjoy a guided tour of our Spring exhibitions, Danielle Dean: This could all be yours! and Dan Guthrie: Empty Alcove / Rotting Figure. Bring Your Baby tours make it easy for parents to bring their babies to art exhibitions. You may find it more comfortable to bring your baby in a sling to move around in the galleries. However, if this doesn’t work for you, buggies are not a problem and Spike Island has space for a buggy park. You are welcome to feed your baby during the tour (chairs are available). Don't worry if you are running late, it can be hard getting anywhere on time with a baby! Jane PorterThe tours are led by Jane Porter, who worked as an arts Producer in Bristol for ten years before changing her career after having two children. She set up Bring Your Baby in 2017 as a response to what she felt was a lack of activities that were designed for parents during her own maternity leave. Jane retrained in horticulture and is now an award-winning Garden Designer. A series of BYB tours of gardens is currently being planned for the Autumn as well as continuing gallery tours in organisations across Bristol. www.plantyprojects.co.uk Instagram @plantyjane AccessibilityThis event is wheelchair accessible. Behind the Scenes: Building Tour and Studio Artist Visits | Spike Island
Mar 15, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Cumberland
Join us for a behind the scenes tour of Spike Island where two artists will open their studio doors to the public. This is a chance to explore the building’s unique architectural features and meet some of the artists based at Spike Island, learn about their practice and view works in progress. On this visit, we meet artists Iris Thorsteinsdottir and Jo Lathwood. Thorsteinsdottir is a photographer, who captures, not just moments frozen in time, but the intricate tapestry of emotions woven between landscapes and their inhabitants. Lathwood’s practice straddles drawing, sculptural works and large installations in both galleries and the public realm. IRIS THORSTEINSDOTTIR Iris Thorsteinsdottir is an Icelandic artist based in Bristol, UK. She holds a Master’s degree in photography from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Inspired by Iceland's captivating landscapes and rich folklore, her work explores the interplay between absence and presence, humanity and nature, and past and present. Recent projects focus on landscapes shaped by human presence and abandoned structures, inviting viewers to reflect on the delicate balance between human activity and the natural world. JO LATHWOOD Jo Lathwood is a queer artist who’s practice straddles drawing, sculptural works and large installations in both galleries and the public realm. The starting point for much of these works is a response to a particular site, event, material or process. Working with recycled timber, she has built a meandering staircase that travelled across three stories to facilitate the audience to touch the roof of a church. Experimenting with foundry technologies, she developed a way of casting lava into contemporary forms and though researching traditional techniques she has made inks from Oak Galls. These ideas have grown from a focus around making and an examination of our impact and relationship with the natural and built environment. Themes such as transitions, viewpoints, illusions, aspiration, environmentalism and anti-capitalism are woven throughout her practice. Lathwood is the Chair of the Board of Trustees for BRICKS Bristol. She was part of the EARTHart council at the University of Bristol (2017–2024). She was also the co-director of Ore and Ingot, an artist-led fine art bronze foundry in Bristol (2012–2018). TOUR SCHEDULE

The Arrogant Worms in Concert | Grosvenor Park United Church
Mar 18, 2025 (UTC-6)ENDED
Cumberland
The Arrogant Worms have spent over three decades making fun of a big dumb world. Their songs have been played on the radio, the internet, and in outer space (on the space shuttle Endeavour). The Worms began at Queen’s University in 1991 when some members of the student cabaret group, The Queen’s Players, started writing songs and sketches for the campus radio station CFRC. Soon the group became The Arrogant Worms (Chris Patterson, Mike McCormick, and Trevor Strong) who have since toured ceaselessly across Canada (and select other parts of the world), released 13 albums, and recorded with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. Their song, The Last Saskatchewan Pirate, has been covered by bands such as Captain Tractor and The Longest Johns, and their Happy Happy birthday song is a viral sensation with over one hundred million views of the various fan videos on YouTube. More than thirty years after they began, The Arrogant Worms continue to provide tuneful and silly escapism for everyone who needs it.
