Artist Talk: Hannah Morris | Brattleboro Museum & Art Center
Feb 8, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Brattleboro
Join the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center (BMAC) for an enlightening Artist Talk featuring Hannah Morris. As the current artist with images showcased on BMAC's facade, Morris will delve into her unique methods and design systems for visual storytelling. This event will provide a fascinating insight into Morris's process of creating collage underpaintings, utilizing imagery from lifestyle, craft, humor, and news magazines spanning the 1940s through the ’70s. By exploring the gender, race, and class norms portrayed in these magazines and questioning the individuals absent from them, Morris's work takes on a thought-provoking nature. Through the recontextualization and rearrangement of her source materials, Morris constructs new, inclusive narratives, which are then flattened and distilled using paint. The resulting imagery is characterized by a sense of off-kilter awkwardness, fragmentation, and ambiguity, inspiring viewers to construct their own personal narratives. Morris herself describes her work as capturing frozen, surreal choreography, ultimately exploring the interconnectedness of our fragile, impermanent human existence. This engaging event is presented in conjunction with the ongoing BMAC exhibition, Hannah Morris: Moveable Objects. Registration is optional, and walk-ins are welcome.
