Immerse yourself in a world of wonder with award-winning storyteller Jason Buck as he weaves magical tales of gardens and nature - the perfect way to celebrate the Unearthed: The Power of Garden exhibition which will be travelling around our libraries this year. As Jason weaves his stories, you'll be transported to lush, verdant landscapes filled with vibrant flora and fauna, where every leaf and petal holds a secret waiting to be discovered. His masterful storytelling will bring to life the beauty and wonder of the natural world, creating a mesmerizing experience that will leave you spellbound and inspired. The performance will be made up of 2 x 35 minute storytelling sessions, which will include a 15 minute interval where free refreshments will be provided. Doors open at 6:15pm for a 6:30pm start. This event is suitable for adults and families (aged 10+) About Jason Buck Jason has been a performer most of his adult life, including gurning, comedy and sword swallowing, but his passion lies in stories – ‘there's nothing like getting lost in a story, the pictures in your head are better than film’. Jason has written and published seven illustrated collections of stories and has won prizes for his storytelling.
A teller of tall tales, a weaver of whimsies and a fashioner of fables, Jason draws on traditional favourites and new ideas. His stories are told in the oldest and best ways – as live performances for modern audiences. As well as a global online audience, Jason has performed across the UK and mainland Europe, blending traditional and contemporary motifs, vocal sound effects and pure, unadulterated fantasy. They remain optional for those who wish to wear one during a Friends event** About the Instructor Kahlil is a certified yoga teacher and workshop facilitator. She is a certified prenatal yoga teacher and is also certified in Kundalini and Hatha yoga. Kahlil has worked in over thirty schools in the District of Columbia (private and public) teaching yoga. She has coached educators, youth workers, college volunteers, interns, and graduate students to create and implement curricula for young people. Piloted in 2021, WELLderness: An Outdoor Wellness Series was developed to bring members of the community together (in person and online) to engage in activities that would have a positive impact on their physical and mental health and well-being. Throughout the year, people have the opportunity to participate in FREE events that center around fostering better connections to self and the environment. **Masks are no longer required. They remain optional for those who wish to wear one during a Friends event** About the Instructor Heather is a resident of Hillbrook in Ward 7 and has practiced yoga for over 30 years. She has been teaching since 2007 after teacher training (and further studies) at Yoga Vidya Dham in India. Heather enjoys sharing the many aspects of yoga with her students and especially enjoys sharing her love of the practice of Surya Namaskara (Sun Salutations). She believes in practicing with devotion, incorporating mantras into the practice, focusing on the breath and body awareness. One of her favourite asanas is Ardha Matsyendrasana as it provides such a wonderful twist. Classes offered are beginner friendly. In addition to Yoga, Heather has studied basic Ayurveda in India as well as Reiki and is certified in Yoga Therapy and Thai Yoga Massage/Therapy. What you will be doing Heather loves sharing the benefits of yoga (especially introducing the practice to beginners) and would be honoured to share this with her ward 7 neighbours in the special setting of the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. Participants will meet at the picnic area past the visitor center. Getting There By car, there is a large visitors parking lot at the park entrance on Anacostia Ave and abundant street parking surrounding the park. By Metro, the park entrance is 1.0 mile from the Deanwood Metro Station and 1.3 miles from the Minnesota Ave Station, both on the Orange Line. By foot or bike, access the park via the Anacostia River Trail. What to Bring Participants should bring a water bottle, yoga mat, snack, bug spray, sun protection, and/or anything else one may carry when spending time outdoors. About Jason Buck Jason has been a performer most of his adult life, including gurning, comedy and sword swallowing, but his passion lies in stories – ‘there's nothing like getting lost in a story, the pictures in your head are better than film’. Jason has written and published seven illustrated collections of stories and has won prizes for his storytelling.
A teller of tall tales, a weaver of whimsies and a fashioner of fables, Jason draws on traditional favourites and new ideas. His stories are told in the oldest and best ways – as live performances for modern audiences.
