Join GNFAC and Friends of GNFAC for the Avalanche Fundamentals December Course: Field sessions at Bridger Bowl. This comprehensive course is designed to teach you the essential principles of avalanche safety. The course includes online pre-recorded classroom content as well as a live ZOOM Q & A session. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to attend a field session at Bridger Bowl from 9am-3pm. The online portion covers a range of topics necessary for understanding avalanches and avalanche terrain. Topics include an introduction to avalanches, recognizing avalanche terrain, terrain management for mechanized users, mountain weather and seasonal snowpack development, decision-making and the human factor, avalanche rescue, and using GNFAC web resources for trip planning. To get the most out of the course, it is recommended to watch the pre-recorded videos ahead of time and come prepared with questions for the live Q & A session on November 29th at 7:00pm via ZOOM. Registration is required for the course, and a donation is suggested. There is also a free ticket available for those who do not wish to donate. Participants should have basic skiing or snowboarding skills and the appropriate equipment for negotiating intermediate ski runs. They should also bring their own avalanche safety equipment including a backpack, beacon, shovel, and probe, as well as enough food, water, and clothing for a 6-hour outdoor class. In addition to the bike event, there is an opportunity to walk one mile with Denise, a member of the M48 road team, or run/jog one mile with Kelsey's Dad, Todd. They will be completing a mile in every state during Mission48. Mission48 aims to inspire girls and women to step out of their comfort zones and build true self-confidence. During the online portion of the course, you will cover various topics such as avalanche introduction, terrain recognition, mountain weather, decision making, avalanche rescue, and trip planning using GNFAC web resources. It is crucial to watch the videos ahead of time and come prepared with questions for the live Q&A session. The field session will take place at Bridger Bowl, from 9:00am to 3:00pm. Participants should have basic skiing or snowboarding skills and the appropriate equipment. You will be split into groups based on your mode of travel, except for families or friends taking the course together. Remember to bring your backpack, avalanche safety equipment (beacon, shovel, probe), and enough food, water, and clothing for a 6-hour outdoor class. If you need assistance with avalanche safety equipment, there are local rental options available. Thanks to our partner, Bridger Bowl, we are able to provide free 1-ride lift tickets for participants. If you already have a pass to Bridger Bowl, plan to use your own.
