About the Workshop
Join WECC and key stakeholders from across the Western Interconnection for a strategic, interactive workshop dedicated to the evolving field of electromagnetic transient (EMT) analysis and simulation with an emphasis on modeling and the integration and assessment of inverter-based resources (IBR).
As our grid becomes more complex, EMT studies are increasingly essential for accurately capturing the fast-timescale behaviors and interactions of IBRs within the Bulk Power System. This workshop is designed to foster collaboration among Transmission Planners (TP), Planning Coordinators (PC), and other industry partners to align best practices for EMT modeling, model validation, performance testing, and regional EMT strategies.
Together, we will work toward a unified regional approach to EMT model development—proactively supporting a reliable, resilient grid in the face of rapid IBR growth, while aligning with changes in the evolving development of regulatory standards.
Workshop Goals
Create a common understanding of EMT modeling needs, drivers, and challenges across the Western Interconnection.
Facilitate dialogue to
standardize EMT modeling requirements
,
model validation
, and
system study methodologies
.
Collect stakeholder feedback on potential regional guidelines, variances, or recommended practices.
Share updates on
NERC’s EMT Standards development
and discuss their implications for Western entities and WECC’s role in supporting the effort.
Provide opportunities to learn from
peer utilities
and
ISOs/RTOs
implementing EMT modeling and screening programs.
Offer a forum for both
senior leaders
and
technical experts
to align strategy and direction.
