Behrang Karimi | Morena di Luna

May 31–Sep 7, 2025 (UTC)
Hove
Exhibitions
Karimi uses a range of methods, including monotypes, wood- and linocuts and gouache; combined, they create a lively dialogue between the artist and his work. Landscapes and views are often merely hinted at – humans are the true heart of Karimi’s work, appearing as portraits, in classic poses, as lying and seated nudes, alone and in groups. The room around them is diffuse, sometimes suggested by a doorway flooded with light, other times by another person appearing at the edge of the picture. Two people face one another, rigid as statues, separated by a light expanse of color, of water? His figures seem delicate and brittle, as does the scenery they move within. They all portray small episodes within a unique moment – like the worm crawling towards the apple – that disappear almost before we have fully grasped their significance.

Paint your own Large Abstract Painting workshop in Brighton | Lawrence Art Studio

Jun 1, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Brighton
Arts
Painting
This isn’t a typical painting adult art class in Brighton. This isn’t a “paint by numbers” class or “copy how I paint” approach. In this workshop we will do things differently: The main tool we will be using is not the brush. It’s our mind - free from limitations. We will paint intuitively! Spontaneously to the music, allowing the paint to evolve and reveal itself freely into an explosion of colours, patterns, marks, shapes, texture on the canvas. We will paint big! Big brush movements, a bold colour pallet and even the fingers. The intention is to let go of any expectations. We will get messy! This is not about making pretty things. It’s rare opportunity to let go of perfectionism and experiment with a wide range of art materials (acrylic, watercolours, pastels, chalk etc) to free our inner artist and find our creative voice in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We will get creative! Art has no limitations, we use every day tools: window squeegee, credit card, bubble wrap, fork, scraper, feather, chopstick, ANYTHING to get our imagination going! Suddenly the concept of “painting” expands! It’s a painting wonderland full of possibilities. We will free ourselves from limiting beliefs! This dynamic and creative free-flow painting style will move us through past fears, creative blocks and self-doubt into joy and freedom! We will express ourselves! By opening our mind and listening to our heart, we can express our soul without boundaries or judgments. While experimenting with painting, we will build a relationship with who we are, reconnect to our inner child and fully express ourselves including the wisdom that is forever inside us. There is such freedom and joy in this! Who is this class for? This is a safe space for anyone! Even those who think they aren’t creative or can’t paint or draw. Also, this is a great opportunity for creative types who haven’t picked up a paintbrush in a while but are longing to express themselves through art. We can play and feel like a kid again without worrying about the end result. Nobody will judge what we create together. We are all on a journey to find our inner artist. The people who come to this class are from all walks of life: freelancers, entrepreneurs, website designers, yoga teachers, success coaches, parents….whatever! This could be fun and creative way to celebrate your birthday, anniversary or any other occasion (corporate team building) in Brighton, perfect Xmas gift too. What to expect on the day? Through fun, guided group and individual exercises we’ll explore wide range of art materials, experiment with an unconventional tools and try many abstract painting techniques including layering, mark making, texture. After a delicious lunch together, you will have time to develop your own intuitive painting on large canvas which you will take home with you at the end of the workshop. Date: Sunday 1st June Time: 10am till 4pm Venue: West Hove Lawrence Art Studio, 16 Kingsthorpe Rd, Brighton and Hove, Hove BN3 5HR Price: £250 (including all art materials + large canvas + lunch ) What’s included: 1 x Large Canvas (80x100cm or bigger, deep edge)Art Materials: acrylic paint, watercolours, spray paints, pastels, gesso and more… (you’re welcome to bring your own materials too)A selection of Brushes, texture & marking tools, apron and everything else you’ll need to create your one-of-the kind abstractLive group demonstration of abstract painting techniques and plenty of 1:1 guidanceProfessional Lawrence Art Studio Brighton and Hove Susex UKDelicious vegetarian lunchRefreshment: tea, coffee, biscuits & fruitsAll day event, places are limited to 10 participantsCan’t make this date? Since then, Graham has had three solo crime novels published; Bad for Good (Sunday Times Top Ten Best Seller, Winner of Crime Fiction Lover Editors’ Choice Award 2022 and Nominated for Specsavers Debut of the Year 2022), Force of Hate, and City on Fire. As a police procedure and crime advisor, Graham works with over 200 authors and TV writers (including Peter James, Elly Griffiths, Anthony Horowitz, Ruth Ware, Mark Billingham and the BBC), helping them inject authenticity into their work. Cultural Experiences
Chris Carter will be joining us in May to celebrate the paperback release of 'The Death Watcher', the 13th adrenaline-packed Robert Hunter thriller. Chris Carter is coming to Brighton Waterstones to chat about his mega- selling Robert Hunter series and celebrate the paperback release of the intensely dark and chilling 'The Death Watcher'. When a routine autopsy on what looked like a straightforward hit-and-run leads the LA Chief Medical Examiner, Dr Carolyn Hove, to discover some puzzling inconsistencies, she calls in Detective Robert Hunter of the LAPD Ultra Violent Crimes Unit. Not only has Dr Hove discovered that the death wasn’t caused by a hit-and-run, but she has also found indications that the victim had been severely tortured prior to death. What no one realises is that what Dr Hove has stumbled upon is just the tip of the iceberg and it will lead Hunter and his partner, Carlos Garcia, on the trail of a twisted and clever killer who hides in plain sight. A serial killer no one even knew existed – a killer who has always operated under the radar, expertly disguising every gruesome murder as an accidental death. But how do you investigate a murder when you have no victims? How do you catch a killer who leaves behind no crime scene? How do you stop a ghost who no one can prove even exists? Book & ticket option includes a paperback copy of 'The Death Watcher' (rrp £9.99) available for collection on the night. Please be in touch on events@waterstones.com if you have any questions or requirements around accessibility. Information Source: Waterstones | eventbrite

Feel the Pause27–29 June 2025 | Brighton Art Space Join us for Feel the Pause, a group exhibition by four emerging artists: Caroline Burgess, Jasmine Latka, Meg Gorman and Quinn McKenzie-Hamilton. The artists first met through Nimble Art School (formerly Hastings Art School) as part of the first digital cohort on its year-long Artist Development Programme, graduating in 2024. This exhibition marks a celebratory closing chapter of their journey together. Step into a reflective space inspired by the quiet rituals of beachcombing: scanning the shore for shells, stones and other treasures washed up by the tide. Whether this be a solitary practice or one shared with loved ones, this mindful act of observation and collection becomes a metaphor for the artists' shared process of noticing, selecting, and cherishing the overlooked. Through painting, sculpture, and mixed media, the exhibition explores themes of connection, memory, and attention, embracing stillness and the small moments found along the way. Calling all oil painters! Have you attended an oil painting class and feel inspired to keep practising what you’ve learnt? Would you like to spend a relaxing Sunday afternoon oil painting in a well-ventilated, inspiring studio space alongside like-minded lovely people? Then we look forward to seeing you at Oil Painting Club. These untutored monthly sessions at the Draw studio will encourage you to develop your personal practise and keep your enthusiasm for oil painting going. Bring any oil paintings you’re currently working on, or start something new working from our pool of photo references. There will also be a still life set up each month to work from. (Please note, we will not be working from a model). We also run a morning session on the same day - why not come to both and make a day of it! Tickets for the morning sessions are available HERE . What to expect If you’ve attended an oil painting course before, this would be ideal for you – it will be an opportunity for you to practise what you've learnt and to start using oil paints on a regular basis. This is not a tutored session - more a relaxed, low pressure friendly group with Sara on-hand for guidance if you need some feedback or helpful pointers – and all genres of oil painting are welcome, from landscape, still life, portraits to abstract! Places are limited to 12 attendees per session and pre-booking is essential. If you have any questions about Oil Painting Club please email info@sarareeve.com If you are a complete beginner to Oil Painting, we recommend you sign up to Introduction to Oil Painting to get you started! Where better to write than a bookshop with a cafe? When better than at 5am? Join other local writers from 5am on the first Wednesday of every month to write as the sun comes up. Great coffee and loose-leaf tea available to kickstart your writing morning. We'll open the shop at 5am and you're welcome to join us then, or at anytime after that. You can stay until we open to the general public at 9.30am. Tickets are limited to 20 as we only have so many chairs and table space. While the majority of writers sit upstairs in the cafe, we also have chairs and tables on the ground floor and in the cosy basement, so feel free to spread yourself about throughout the bookshop - wherever you feel comfortable. Tickets cost £10 (including VAT) and in addition to including your first coffee or pot of tea, you will also get a 30% discount on any other drinks or snacks. Feel free to bring a snack with you, so long as it's not smelly! The local bakery opposite opens at 8am ish if you want to grab a pastry from them. If you're using a laptop, please have it fully charged for your writing session as we only have one plug socket. This is a silent write session - there's no workshopping, just the motivation of being around other writers as the sun comes up. We can promise you a magical atmosphere. Why do we do this? Author and bookshop owner Cathy Hayward has regularly risen at 5am to write and she wondered if other local writers did the same. We started the 5am Writing Club in the bookshop as a trial on the Summer Solstice 2023. They've proved popular so they're now a monthly fixture and we'll keep running them as long as people keep turning up. If you have any questions, or feedback, email cathy@kemptownbookshop.co.uk Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable just because of the admin involved and Eventbrite's high fees - sorry. Ballet
Following a highly successful tour in 2024, Ballet Central returns in 2025 with a brand-new programme of classical ballet and contemporary dance. The repertoire includes Frederick Ashton’s miniature masterpiece Foyer de danse (1932) . Animating Edgar Degas’ iconic paintings and pastels of Paris Opera Ballet dancers, this will be the first staging of the ballet in over 90 years, following its recreation by Ursula Hageli for The Frederick Ashton Foundation. Principal Character Artist of The Royal Ballet, Kristen McNally, presents a vibrant modern ballet with a glorious new musical composition by Central’s Tabor Music Director, Philip Feeney. FEAST allows the audience to catch a glimpse of a colourful community where conversation is punctuated and interactions explode with character. In contrast, Ballet Central presents contemporary works by Dickson Mbi and Thick & Tight. Thick & Tight’s theatrical work Keeping Up with the Apocalypse will combine dance, theatre and mime. The piece is a meditation on greed, vanity and the absurdity of a species bringing about its own undoing . Dickson Mbi's work depicts the energetic ambition and perseverance required to pave new pathways in dance theatre and performance. Drawing from the Earth's vibrations and warmth, this piece explores the practices of ritual and shared human experience. Receive all Ballet Central announcements by subscribing to our newsletter .
