Out of the Shadows: Understanding the Complex Interplay of Medical and Psychological Factors in Diagnosing and Treating Eating Disorders

Presentation Description:
Eating disorders are complex psychiatric conditions associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Recognizing eating disorders and knowing what level of care is indicated can go a long way in helping patients receive the help they need. The purpose of this presentation is to provide education about the wide variability of eating and feeding disorders, focusing on how to identify an eating disorder, the medical complications that can arise, the psychology behind the development and persistence of the disorder, and best practices for treatment. Attendees should feel empowered to better understand complications of eating disorders in patients and feel more confident in recommending appropriate treatment options.
Objectives:
Following this presentation, participants will be able to…
Describe medical complications, psychological symptoms, and best treatment practices for anorexia nervosa restricting subtype, anorexia nervosa binge eating/ purging subtype, atypical anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and ARFID
Recognize why eating disorders might develop following bariatric surgery or misuse of GLP-1 agonists and know warning signs and treatment recommendations for these atypical cases
Identify the different levels of care in eating disorder treatment and how medical and psychological indications drive decisions regarding the appropriate level of care
Presenters:
Allison Nitsch, MD, FACP, CEDS-C
Allison Nitsch, MD, FACP, CEDS-C completed Internal Medicine Residency and Chief Residency at University of Colorado Anschutz School of Medicine. She works as Lead hospitalist at ACUTE Center for Eating Disorders at Denver Health, a medical stabilization unit for people 15 and older with severe eating disorders. She currently serves as co-chair for the Academy of Eating Disorders Medical Care Standards Committee and is a Certified Eating Disorders Specialist- Consultant (CEDS-C). She is passionate about educating others on the medical complications of severe eating disorders, an often neglected topic in undergraduate and graduate medical training.
Kamila M. Cass, Ph.D., CEDS-S
Dr. Kamila Cass, PhD, CEDS-S, completed her master’s and Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the University of Missouri-Columbia and her predoctoral psychology residency at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Dr. Cass has worked with eating disorders for many years, in several settings, including private practice, hospital programs, community clinics, and college counseling centers. Dr. Cass has also worked on a bariatric surgical team, designing the pre-surgical psychological evaluation process, and providing support to patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Dr. Cass has worked as a psychologist at the ACUTE Center for Eating Disorders and Severe Malnutrition for the past six years and is the lead developer of the ARFID Track, overseeing a multidisciplinary team of providers dedicated to providing individualized, evidence-based treatment to patients with ARFID. Dr. Cass is an Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and is active in research and publishing and has been a featured speaker at national and international conferences for eating disorders.
