What happens to the clothes we throw away, and who bears the burden of fashion’s waste?
This travelling pop-up exhibition by Kantamanto Social Club brings the reality of global fashion waste to The Social Hub Rotterdam and Eindhoven. Talk 'From Bales to Beaches: Conversations on Rethinking Fashion’s Afterlife':
Join Kantamanto Social Club and New Order of Fashion for a critical conversation on the global secondhand supply chain and the power of upcycling as craft and creative resistance.
From the shores of Accra to the studios of Eindhoven, this panel brings together voices from both ends of the fashion system: How do our clothes travel from closets in the Global North to Kantamanto Market in Ghana? How do upcyclers like Jonathan Nii Teiko Tackie and Jonas Afari Martinson transform discarded garments into new fashion? And what role does local agency play in reclaiming ownership over what we wear?
Moderated by Anabel Poh (Kantamanto Social Club) with insights from Haiko Huvenaars (New Order of Fashion), this conversation unpacks fashion’s hidden flows and the communities reimagining its future. Workshop 'Ode to the Old Tote':
What if your next tote bag could carry a global story of creativity, care, and circularity? Join Kantamanto Social Club for a hands-on upcycling workshop inspired by the vibrant reuse culture of Kantamanto Market in Accra, Ghana, one of the world’s largest secondhand textile markets.
We’ll transform discarded linen and textiles into beautiful, functional tote bags. Guided by Ghanaian upcyclers Jonathan Nii Teiko Tackie and Jonas Afari Martinson, you’ll learn the powerful processes behind preparing secondhand garments for upcycling & reuse, from sorting to stencilling design using traditional redyeing techniques. No sewing experience needed. All materials provided. Just bring your hands and your curiosity. About 'Kantamanto Social Club':
Kantamanto Social Club is an upcycled fashion platform that reclaims space for historically marginalised communities. We challenge dominant narratives by amplifying voices that have long been excluded from global conversations on environmental and economic sustainability.
At the heart of our work is Kantamanto Market in Accra, Ghana, West Africa’s largest second-hand textile market and a dynamic hub for circular fashion. Every week, over 15 million discarded garments from the Global North flood this market. Kantamanto Social Club confronts waste colonialism, working to dismantle systemic injustices embedded in the global fashion system. While the industry continues to generate immense waste without accountability, it is communities like Kantamanto that bear the burden, despite being excluded from decision-making processes. Yet, Kantamanto is far from a passive recipient of the world’s waste. It is a powerful site of innovation, where fashion is continuously regenerated through reuse, repair, and upcycling. What sets our work apart is a radically positive approach that shifts decision-making power to those on the frontlines of textile recovery. We centre informal communities as leaders in the circular fashion movement. By foregrounding community-driven innovation and reclaiming cultural agency, we challenge the power dynamics of the traditional fashion industry. Through exhibitions, storytelling, and research, we celebrate resilience and advocate for systemic change in waste governance, sustainability policy, and fashion education. Rather than looking to the Global North for solutions, we recognise that the Global South has long been leading the way in sustainable practice.
