Don't set up dates too quickly It's normal to chat and have some back and forth before deciding if a date is in the cards. If the person wants to meet you immediately that is a RED FLAG. 2. Meet up in a public place the first time It's a wise decision to choose a busy public location for your first date. Meet at a pub, coffee shop, restaurant, and/or busy park. This allows a secure setting for both of you. 3. Always arrange your own transportation for the initial date Always meet your date in a public place. Never, ever let them pick you up or drop you off on your first few dates. Even if they offer to pick you up or drop you off, say "no thanks" until you trust them! Remember the old saying stranger DANGER. 4. Tell someone you trust that you have a date Never go on a date/meet-up without telling someone. This should always be your no. 1 safety rule when meeting people for the first time. Let a friend or family member know that they should expect to hear from you at a certain time. You can also let them know where you're going on the date. It’s also a smart idea to have a ‘safe word’ or ‘safe phrase’, to use, just in case you need to make a quick exit. 5. Think before exchanging numbers Do not forget that you are under no need to share phone numbers if you feel uncomfortable. It’s OK to schedule dates and converse only through a safe app until you feel ready to give out your phone number. Always take your time when to disclose contact information since your privacy is crucial. 6. ALWAYS Trust your instincts If you sense any discomfort or uneasy vibes while conversing, planning a date in person, don't hesitate to leave immediately and exit the situation. Your well-being always comes first, and it's perfectly fine to step away if something doesn't feel right. Let your friend or family member know. Information Source: Crazy4Events | eventbrite

Think Tank Juniors: Case Based Learning in Burlington for Grades 6-8 | Tansley Woods Community Centre

Jun 13, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Burlington
Family Events
Welcome to Think Tank Juniors! We are a Case-Based Learning Program, designed to help students in Grades 6-9 develop and foster critical thinking, decision making and problem solving. Our goal is to build future leaders and entrepreneurs. We started this workshop series to fill an important gap in the current education curriculum. Where students learn one subject at a time and often only one way to solve a problem, our goal is to teach our kids to think differently...while learning to communicate effectively and confidently. Here we take real-world cases à modeled after real business and social challenges & tailor them to the provincial curriculum. Our program is designed to complement and fill the gaps in our provincial curriculum, by teaching kids to apply concepts rather than memorization alone! How the Program Works: Link to our Video We take real world cases that combine business, finance, marketing, strategy, and social responsibility, among others, to teach students to apply practical ways to solve each unique case. We encourage students to think strategically about solutions, and through these case workshops, help cement curriculum subjects into everyday life. Our goal is to help prepare our students for future post-secondary education, including DECA and other higher educational programs. Through our program, students get exposed to a variety of business and career paths to help them expand opportunities for their future. Our program is not only designed to focus on academic benefits, but also social and personal growth. Workshops are conducted in small group settings, often rotating throughout the year. This encourages students to learn to work within new teams and develop confidence in sharing ideas with each other. Each group presents their solution weekly, and each student is encouraged to participate equally, providing an opportunity for coaching and fine-tuning their oral presentation skills. Our program follows a strict fair play policy, where each student is given equal opportunities to participate, and/or is encouraged to participate in a safe and supportive environment. Sessions are taught by teachers with real world experience and often MBA's and other post-graduate degrees. Annual Learning Goals: Develop problem-solving and decision-making skills through real-world case analysis. Learn financial literacy, marketing, and strategy concepts through hands-on application. Strengthen teamwork, leadership, and communication in group-based projects. Understand how businesses innovate, compete, and address global issues. Teamwork, public speaking and developing confidence in sharing ideas and presenting. The Think Tank Junior Advantage: “Unlike traditional extra-curricular educational programs, that focus on one specific subject area, we offer a program that integrates multiple subjects into cohesive learning experiences. This helps the students maximize their chance of retaining information and knowing when and how to apply it in various environments.” Program Overview: Our program runs weekly on Fridays from May to August on a weekly drop-in basis. We offer a complimentary drop-in for students looking to try out the program. This applies for the first visit only. Each additional session will be charged $35 per session. An Evening with Alison Bechdel: Spent | Phoenix Books Burlington

Jun 10, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Burlington
Cultural Experiences
In Alison Bechdel’s hilariously skewering and gloriously cast new comic novel confection, a cartoonist named Alison Bechdel, running a pygmy goat sanctuary in Vermont, is existentially irked by a climate-challenged world and a citizenry on the brink of civil war. She wonders: Can she pull humanity out of its death spiral by writing a scathingly self-critical memoir about her own greed and privilege? Meanwhile, Alison’s first graphic memoir about growing up with her father, a taxidermist who specialized in replicas of Victorian animal displays, has been adapted into a highly successful TV series. It’s a phenomenon that makes Alison, formerly on the cultural margins, the envy of her friend group (recognizable as characters, now middle-aged and living communally in Vermont, from Bechdel’s beloved comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For ). As the TV show Death and Taxidermy racks up Emmy after Emmy—and when Alison’s Pauline Bunyanesque partner Holly posts an instructional wood-chopping video that goes viral—Alison’s own envy spirals. Why couldn’t she be the writer for a critically lauded and wildly popular reality TV show…like Queer Eye ...showing people how to free themselves from consumer capitalism and live a more ethical life?!! Spent ’s rollicking and masterful denouement—making the case for seizing what’s true about life in the world at this moment, before it’s too late—once again proves that “nobody does it better” ( New York Times Book Review ) than the real Alison Bechdel. Alison Bechdel’s cult following for her early comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For expanded wildly for her family memoirs, the New York Times bestselling and Time magazine #1 Book of the Year graphic memoir Fun Home, adapted into a Tony Award–winning musical, and Are You My Mother? Most recently, The Secret to Superman Strength was named a New York Times Best Graphic Novel of 2021. Bechdel has been named a MacArthur Fellow, among many other honors. DATE : Tuesday, June 10th, 7PM LOCATION : Phoenix Books, 89 Church Street, Burlington, VT 05401 ADMISSION : This is a ticketed event. Your ticket includes general admission for one, and one hardcover copy of Spent . Seating is limited and will be on a first come, first served basis. A signing line will follow the event. BOOKS: Can't make it to the event but still want to purchase a signed, personalized copy of Spent: A Comic Novel ? Click HERE . If you ordered a book for store pick up, we will contact you as soon as it's ready. If you ordered a book with shipping, please allow an additional 7-10 days for delivery. An Evening with Helen Whybrow | 89 Church St

Burlington
Cultural Experiences
“Sheep have helped me become a good shepherd, not just to them, but to a place that is my sustenance and joy as well as my unending labor and worry.” Join Phoenix Books Burlington for an evening with renowned Vermont author, editor, and farmer Helen Whybrow to celebrate the release of her new book, The Salt Stones: Seasons of a Shepherd’s Life . Helen Whybrow is an Editor-at-Large for Milkweed Editions. She was the publisher of an imprint of W. W. Norton for many years before becoming a freelance editor and Editor-at-Large for Orion Magazine . With a focus on creative nonfiction, Helen has worked with dozens of well-known writers over the years, including Barry Lopez, Lauret Savoy, Robin Kimmerer, Pico Iyer, Andrew Lam, and many others. She has authored two books, Dead Reckoning (W. W. Norton, 2001) and A Man Apart ( Chelsea Green, 2015 ) and edited several anthologies, including Hearth (Milkweed, 2019). Her essays have appeared in Cagibi, Hunger Mountain and other literary journals. Helen studied literature at Amherst College and journalism at Harvard. Also an organic farmer and co-founder of a nonprofit that nurtures leaders working for land justice, she lives with her family in Vermont. About the book: In the heart of Vermont’s Green Mountains, Helen Whybrow and her partner set out to restore an old two-hundred-acre farm. Knowing that “belonging more than anything requires participation,” they begin to intertwine their lives with the land. But soon after releasing a flock of Icelandic sheep onto the worn-out fields, Whybrow realizes that the art of shepherding extends far beyond the flock and fences of Knoll Farm. In prose both vivid and lean, The Salt Stones offers an intimate and profoundly moving story of what it means to care for a flock and truly inhabit a piece of land. The shepherd’s life unfolds for Whybrow in the seasons and cycles of farming and family—birthing lambs, fending off coyotes, rescuing lost sheep in a storm, and raising children while witnessing her mother’s decline. Exploring the interdependence of animals, as well as of the earth and ourselves, Whybrow reflects on the ways sheep connect her to place and to the ancient practice of shepherding. Evocative, affectionate, and illuminating, The Salt Stones sings of a way of life that is at once ancient and entirely contemporary, inspiring us all to seek greater intimacy and a sense of belonging wherever our home place may be. Celebration
Some people are surprised to discover that you don't need to travel to cottage country to see fireflies! It's true, fireflies live in natural habitats in our beautiful city of Burlington! Because fireflies are especially sensitive to disappearing habitat, we love to celebrate their annual mating dance and the health of our land. Join us for an evening of live music, campfire and firefly walk to celebrate this bioluminescent bug and learn how we can contribute to its continued survival. This is an outdoor event and the rain date is Saturday, June 28th. Enjoy live music from a local band playing songs you can sing along to. We will have a campfire and marshmallows to roast, snacks to buy, and when it gets dark enough - the firefly trail will be open. You are welcome to hang out on the deck and play in the yard while enjoying the music. It will be dark enough to see lots of firefly action after 9:15pm. The firefly trail is uneven, a bit hilly and will remain unlit for the protection of the fireflies. The firefly walk is not suitable for people with mobility issues. Feel free to email info@bluedotacres.ca if you want to discuss how we might accommodate accessibility needs. There is a cover charge of $10 per person.
